Night 53: Outside the Institute: North

[From here.]

L hadn't been looking forward to the landing on the other side of the wall. Only the day before, he had been troubled by a persistent ache in his lower back—a consequence of the sleep study—and apart from that, the supplies in his coat pockets made his balance less stable and sure than he would have liked. He knew that the jump was a wager, albeit a small one; he couldn't predict how he would land. Injury would mean spending the night sitting against the wall in the freezing darkness, at best.

Never mind. Calculated gambles were necessary in this situation, when they could control so few of the variables, and he wouldn't have left his room if he didn't feel equal to it. He dropped from the top of the wall as lightly as he could, hitting the ground on his feet.

A quick assessment of his condition confirmed that both he and all of his equipment had survived the drop intact. He held his hand out to Lunge for his blade.

L was up and over just a fraction more quickly than he had managed- his therapy couldn't have been troubling him that much, then. Lunge had been until that point faintly aware of the nagging reminder in his head, telling him to ask the man how he was feeling- but that was beside the point. If he couldn't keep up, that was tough.

"Here." Handing the axe down, he dropped from the wall and into a slightly wobbly crouch next to L with a soft thump. He was up again in an instant, albeit with a slight wince, surveying the area carefully: vast, dark fields with the suggestion of rockier land ahead, rolling mist on all sides, but no obvious signs of movement. "All clear. Now it should simply be a matter of following the walls around for a while."

He straightened the front of his jacket in satisfaction, then took the knife back out of his pocket before heading right, along the wall. It was bad enough in the Institute, but out here they were totally exposed- having the wall on one side was at least a small consolation for that.

The piercing wail brought Lunge's head to a sharp turn towards where the courtyard would be, to his side- but when nothing immediately sprang over the wall, he shook his head and took off again, matching his pace to L's. The faster the better; it was cold out, and they needed to move quickly anyway. Just because the source of the sound hadn't come after them, that didn't mean it still wouldn't.

His caution, however, was soon thrown off by another sound, one that at first seemed to be a hum but which, as L fished the radio out of his pocket, turned into the end of a song and then a voice. Marc. Lunge was typing within the seconds.

At first the message was more of the usual. More of the earnest talk he'd heard before, more admissions of inexperience, more lilting hope. That he wasn't entirely sure of the Eagle's identity was disappointing but, in hindsight, to be expected, given that the man was apparently a rookie.

He carried on listening as they turned the corner, pausing in his typing only to raise his flashlight before stepping around the wall.

Kratos landed a little heavily on his feet; the drop, while moderate, had been nothing to scoff at. Straightening up, he backed up against the wall and took a look around. As it had when they'd approached the forest the other night, the terrain grew rougher as they left the immediate confines of the institute; it looked like it got particularly rocky in the distance, although not quite as bad as the western mountains. Once again, he was thankful for his boots.

He looked up at Soma. "We're clear for now." There hadn't been any noise after he'd dropped down; he could assume that they hadn't alerted anything yet.

Soma made the descent a little more carefully; the institute-issue sneakers were hardly flimsy, but they wouldn't absorb the shock of landing nearly as well as Kratos's boots apparently had. Still, the sound of rubber sliding against the rocky ground seemed unusually loud to her in the surrounding quiet.

"It seems like it." As far as she was concerned, though, anything could happen, and the view directly north didn't seem to afford much more cover than the rec field had. She bounced on her heels once, twice, then set off, her flashlight covering the ground in front of her at a steady rate.

Kratos quickly caught up with Soma while staying on the lookout for any signs of danger - and for anything that might be of their interest. It was difficult to predict what was coming their way beyond the beam of Soma's flashlight, but if he squinted hard enough, he thought it looked as if the steady incline eventually gave way to another drop. He couldn't be sure; he was a little preoccupied with maintaining his footing.
