Night 52: M91-M100 Hallway

Naruto was glad he'd managed to make it through a whole day, for once. AND he still had the kunai Sakura had given him a couple nights ago. That meant all he had to do was find her, or Sasuke, or someone he could trust, and they could try this again.

Okay, okay, so it was kind of annoying that they weren't really getting anywhere. But it couldn't be that way forever, right?

The advantage of having a strained relationship with his roommate was that dinner was nice and quiet whenever he pleased, as Nigredo made it obvious that he would rather avoid exchange if possible. Sync didn't care to be social, and aside from a few pending topics there was certainly nothing worth mentioning. The meal itself was fine, and the silence that accompanied it was even better.

He was quick to finish, setting the plates aside before shifting to lie down on the bed and waited for the inevitable intercom announcement. Though the message itself was short and straight to the point, it left the God-General wondering what exactly Landel had 'in store' for them.

As usual, the replica prepared lightly, keeping his flashlight close while tucking his folded maps into the waistband of his pants. He didn’t pay much mind to the other occupant, instead standing up and walking out of the room as soon as the doors unlocked.

Heiji had come out of his room to tell Okita he was alive, catch sight of Shinichi, then retreat back for the rest of the day. He couldn't be around people. Shinichi had found him on the couch the night after Heiji had nearly drowned in air, and look what had happened. He couldn't, couldn't, go out and endanger more people. Okita, Kaito, all of the History Club... Something was out to get him, and he didn't know what.

His roommate hadn't come to dinner. He guessed he had been released or something, though Heiji didn't know who to contact. Someone would figure it out. They always did.

At the moment, Heiji had his own problems. Most of which consisted of the cramps he was forming by huddling on the bed in the corner of his empty room. Watching, waiting. Kaitou Kid be damned, Heiji wasn't going out there for anyone.

His roommate left without so much as a word, an improvement in the light of past actions. Despite briefly wondering why he hadn't yet shot the teen in the face, Nigredo ignored his surroundings and their occupant in favor of staying in bed and staring at walls. Precaution be damned; he did not have the mind to care anymore. It wasn't until the room emptied that the child finally moved.

Past experience might have objected, but his first order of business was a change of clothes. One or the other family member would likely claim offense; therefore, it was a small blessing Nigredo would meet neither tonight--that he decided hours ago. No one would find fault with his choice, and he would be warmer than he had been for days.

As always, the only thing he took out into the open was the gun.

He had spent the evening in silence, eating mechanically. He was still trying to process what had happened, mind still reeling over the shock of it all. Marie... Marie was alive! Not just Soma, not anymore. Marie was within her and... and even if it was selfish and vile to be grateful to this place, he was, oh he was. He'd thought that she was dead, that she'd been disposed of by the facility. He'd thought that he'd never see her again and now... he couldn't hardly believe it.

He jolted when the intercom sounded, having been drifting in his head to the exclusion of all else. He shook himself, trying to force himself into a mindset better suiting nightshift, and stumbled to fetch his things.

She makes you vulnerable.

She does nothing of the kind.

You're thinking of her, not focussing on what you should be doing.

I missed her, Hallelujah.

Not much good to anyone if it gets you killed. I'll...

No. Not... not yet. I can manage.

If you say so. I'll be watching.

He sighed, reaching for his things before heading outside, trying to drag his mind away from that haunting idea.

Dinner had been quiet, both he and Allie having their minds on other things it seemed. His conversation with Sechs had told him a lot, and he'd managed to sum it up quietly into a note which he dropped in the suggestion box, hoping it would reach the intended recipient. The Head Doctor hadn't exactly been clear on how they were to contact him, but with days gone by now and nothing new to report, he was getting desperate for some kind of news to send the man. If he kept getting nothing, who knew what might happen to Sakura.

He dressed and gathered his things, the ring last of all, he slipped it on over his gloves, glancing briefly at the jewel of his own blood. It would take them to the house, where there was nothing really to report, but Yuuhi supposed the town was more likely to have some sort of clue than the institute itself. The doctor would know wouldn't he? If that Marc person was in his own building.
