Night 51: West Wing, South Hall 1-B

[from here]

In contrast to the main hallway in the block behind her, this section of hallway seemed to be completely quiet. Creepily so, and dark with the sort of darkness that scared children (and, okay, maybe some teenagers who were completely mature and rational otherwise, which group definitely didn't include her) and made them jump from the center of the floor to the bed rather than step too close to the thick shadows underneath it. Minako paused a moment to turn in a complete circle, shining her light around the hallway to make certain there wasn't anything lurking... at least, not within the range of her flashlight's beam.

...yeah, okay, thinking about it too much was just going to freak her out, wasn't it. Minako sniffed and flipped her hair back over her shoulder, looking the picture of absolute indifference just in case anything watching might care if she was worried or something, then flounced off down the hallway without a sideways nervous glance. She did, of course, remain entirely alert and listening for sounds of movement, but that was kind of habit by now.

Darkness fell in again as Morrigan rounded into the hall, settling around her shoulders like a choking cloak. It seemed to stretch on further in one direction than the other, and as she felt her way along the wall, she found confirmation of this: there was a bend, sharp, that suggested a second corridor.

Loathe as she was to put the wide expanse of darkness at her back, that seemed the best bet for finding an exit or an armory. With her vision so limited, she could wander forever in this place, waiting for her magic to return so she could take a more suitable form, or at the very least conjure something for a light.

Wandering helpless did not appeal, and so, ignoring that she was stuck doing so either way, she rounded the corner into the next hall.

Almost there. She managed to stop paying attention to how many people were where and instead focus on just getting herself to the stairs as quickly as possible. It was the same hallway she'd been in with Bella the first night -- she cast one familiar, almost nostalgic look at the door to the nurse's station that they'd both failed to open.

At least one productive thing had come of that adventure. She knew she had a friend, she'd even go so far as to say a confidante, in Bella. That was important in a place like this.

The thought reminded her to bring it up with Peter and make sure he'd met someone he could talk to, as well. It didn't suit her at all to think that maybe he was stuck there with only her and Elle -- or worse, Sylar -- to talk to.

Past the nurse's station, it was just a quick right.

He'd yet to pick up a new flashlight to replace his old one. Though Heat's night vision wasn't too bad and he shouldn't have any difficulty getting where he needed to go, he probably needed to fix that sooner rather than later. It might even be something he could ask his roommate about, if he felt like bothering.

What he really needed was a light ball. Somewhere in this place there had to be a hidden vendor he wasn't aware of.

Navigating this part of the institute was becoming second nature to Rita. She'd traveled from her assigned room to the main hall several times, both during the day and night. It would be nice to think that this would be the last time, but Rita wasn't quite so optimistic anymore.

Escaping was a priority, as always, but Rita was beginning to understand that she also needed to be prepared for long-term survival, in case it came down to that. She didn't want to think about what would happen back on Terca Lumireis if she didn't return in time, but even worse than that was the hypothetical scenario of not returning at all. That was completely unacceptable.

Besides, she couldn't lose hope. Estelle and the others wouldn't let their world die, and they wouldn't let humankind be sacrificed. Even without Rita there... there still had to be a way.

Though her thoughts weighed heavily in her mind, Rita remained light on her feet as she stepped quietly into the next hall.

After collecting the things she needed (flashlight, that odd red ring) Bella was out the door and heading down the familiar hallways to the halfway point between her room and Edward's. She could only imagine how frazzled he was going to be tonight - she had a feeling it wasn't going to be pretty.

No matter.

No one in the hallway. Looking around for a moment, Bella leaned against the wall, clicking off her flashlight. As if she needed something to hunt her down so soon into the night. She was sure if that happened she'd never be allowed out ever again. Ever.

Sighing, the teenager mumbled under her breath, rubbing her bandaged palms together after pocketing her flashlight. Things were going to be fine; she had faith in Edward, and while she didn't actually know Venom all that well, she still had faith in him as well. After all, Edward was, for the most part, still in one piece, and that must have meant that they were able to protect each other, right?

At least, that was what she continued to tell herself.

It was too quiet out in this hallway. Something could all too easily catch Rika off-guard; she needed to find someone to stick close to. That wouldn't happen just in this small hallway.

In good news, Guybrush was making amazing time as he jogged the familiar path through the hallways and toward the ladies' halls. There weren't any monsters in sight, he could see thanks to his flashlight (which had miraculously returned to his room after the previous night), he wasn't thinking about LeChuck's special two-handed cutlass- crud. Scratch that last one.

In bad news, his leg was really feeling the burn of the run. Every other step was punctuated with an "Ow," the scratches he'd received from the demon frogs deciding to finally annoy him when he needed his legs to work.

The worst part was that he'd nearly forgotten Elaine's room number (and the song he'd come up with to help him remember it). "Something something, picking up chicks, Plunderbunny living... uh... F26! Yes!"

Hnn. Either Scar was remarkably early, or remarkably late. Still, there was hardly something to worry about. After all, most of the patients tended to stand around in the main hall rather than this one. Hardly a reason for it to change all of a sudden.

Keeping both eye and ear out for any signs of danger, the former lion continued to walk down the hallway.

They had to have come this way, Mele realized. The other end of the block of rooms was a dead end; she'd glanced in that direction once or twice. Maybe even asked once, back when Mele had still been inclined to ask and the nurse had still been willing to answer her questions. Mele looked both ways, but wherever they'd gone, she couldn't see them anymore, especially not with the flimsy light of this stupid

Breathe.

And that was the perfect reason you didn't get attached to people you couldn't protect. What do I do if I don't find those stairs? She'd think of that later.

The walk to the women's block was familiar to the Doctor, but in all the trips he'd made to it looking for Donna, he'd never actually set foot past the entrance. He would arrive, wait, and then move on once Donna had appeared. This time, however, he knew Donna's room number. This time he would go straight to her room instead of wondering whether or not they'd accidentally miss each other in the dark.

Nevertheless, he kept an eye out for anyone ginger as he entered the block, just in case.

There was no Donna in the hall where they usually met, either. The whole thing was slowly making less and less sense to the Doctor, and he couldn't help but feel that he'd missed something, something obvious. Something that Donna would have noticed, if she hadn't been missing. Something that Martha would have noticed, if she'd been there. Something that Rose would have noticed.....

But whatever it was, he couldn't put his finger on it right now. Donna wasn't here, and now Dean would be the only one waiting on him. Putting one foot in front of the other, the Doctor started back towards the other hall. He could think on the way, and then sort this whole thing out after seeing Dean.

Ah, here they were. The place where Elena had barreled into him last night. Damon still couldn't say what it was that had freaked her out so bad, but he had a feeling it must've been something like a cockroach or a creaky door. Couldn't blame her, he guessed.

Here was also the place where Damon stopped having a specific idea of which direction to go in. He knew where Elena had come from, but not where her room was.

Stefan, though, had the information. Normal vampires drank human blood, Stefan knew where Elena was at. Business as usual. There was a reason why he hadn't asked about it on the board—aside from the fact that while he had no problem having Stefan scrawl his room number in public, he wasn't so certain about inviting Elena to do the same.

Besides. He didn't like asking when there were other ways of obtaining what he wanted to know.

Damon peered around the corner, then stepped back and gestured Stefan through first. Since Stefan knew where to go and all.

"After you."

He'd just about settled on a direction when Damon decided to choose for him. Of course Damon would. Stefan watched his brother saunter past him down the righthand way, but not two seconds passed before Stefan was following after — a couple steps behind, as Damon had been following him. There was the temptation to ask his brother what was doing (his compulsive need to voice the obvious questions, as Damon would put it), but Stefan kept silent.

All day, he'd been making it a habit to put his trust in the people here when they spoke to him of incomprehensible things. Maybe it was time to extend that same trust to the person he'd known the longest. After all, Damon would actually have some idea of where Elena was housed, seeing how he'd run into her last night. His brother might like to play games with him, but Stefan didn't believe that Damon would toy with him on this matter. Not right now.

And if there were dangerous creatures slinking around the shadows, the least he could do was guard Damon's back as he lead the way to Elena. The two of them moved swiftly through the hallways — not half as swiftly as they could at full strength, but Stefan would take what they could get. He'd been right about the main hallway being a gathering place, but Damon didn't stop, and neither did Stefan. Still, it was strange. He saw quite a few people wearing the grey Landel's uniform, and yet more people wearing... stranger things. But no nurses, no orderlies... and no monsters.

None except the two of them. Damon turned and stopped before the entrance of what was evidently another patient block. Stefan eyed his brother when he abruptly turned and gestured him through. Did Damon not know the rest of the way? Or was it something else?

It didn't matter. If Elena was here, that was enough. "Thank you," Stefan answered shortly, and took the lead.

Such deep, overwhelming darkness was unusual to Lightning, but it served well to hide her as she continued to move as stealthily as possible. There were people here, wearing that strange grey clothing and wielding the same type of light-stick that she now tucked close to her body with the illumination switched off. However...

She hesitated at first, certain that as soon as she was seen she would also be forced to fight. After a minute though she realized that, impossibly, she wasn't the odd one out-- at least in appearance or demeanor. These people did not seem to be overly distressed, as she would have expected normal people to be if they had just woken up in a strange place like she had. They also seemed to find nothing wrong with her presence, which wasn't a fluke since Lightning was sure she saw at least two of them look straight at her... and then continue looking past.

Were these people... contemporary natives of Gran Pulse?

Unease mounted in the young ex-soldier as she paused, attention switching from the lengthy hallway on one side, to the more open area on the other. In the end, she opted for the more open-seeming option again, still extremely cautious, but at the same time trying not to stand out.

As Ratigan continued down the hallway, however, his stance became more confident and closer to his old self. Perhaps Basil wasn't the one behind all this. Honestly, did Ratigan really think that that half-witted dunderpate had the cunning to pull off such a complex scheme? He could barely manage to perform a basic chemistry operation, as he had proven mere hours ago. No, this had been set in motion by a much more powerful force. What was important, however, was that Ratigan seemed to have the last laugh.

"Oh, poor Basil..." he chuckled as he shook his head and shrugged widely, "I'm afraid that it appears that the superior mind has triumphed once more."

And with that, Ratigan strode confidently into the larger section of the hallway, eager to find out more about his new home.

The population seemed to abruptly thin out again as soon as Oliver turned out of the main hall. It wasn't entirely surprising, but it did leave him wondering just where everyone was going. The hallways hadn't held nearly enough people to comprise the entire patient population, and how many would be willing to stay in their rooms if there was a chance to make a break for it?

Of course, there were the studies mentioned over the broadcast before night fell. Given the tone of the other broadcasts, he doubted those meant anything pleasant.

As Natalia walked toward where the hallway opened into the next, she attempted to keep at least a little aware of her surroundings. She continuously shook herself out of a single-minded focus, her eyes looking only head, her ears barely open to the shadows surrounding. The steady clapping of her boots on the smooth floor ought to have made her self-conscious of their sound, but sensibility in footwear selection had never been a quality she embraced. These were surely more practical, at least, than the slippers.

The distances between one hall and another were thusfar short, and quickly Natalia reached the end. Left now, to the larger corridor, where there tended to be more movement, more lights, more patients in transit.'

However, she supposed that if the room was the same one that her and Claire had fought that monster in, then she figured it would at least give her an advantage. She remembered the room clearly as it was, anyway.

Trying her hardest not to trip due to the speed they were traveling, Bella looked up at Venom and tried her hardest to speak. "Thanks for the bat, by the way. I think your note was taken down by a nurse or something because I went back to respond to it later and it was completely done, so ..." she didn't want him to think she had stood him up or anything, because that had not been the case. She had just been censored, that was all.

"And if you're still interested in monster hunting," she suddenly said, looking towards the silver haired man, "I know where we can find one after we get whatever it is we're ... uh, getting. All we have to do is find a mirror."

"I've traveled to the second floor a few times," he explained, eyes firmly back to the sights ahead. So long as he knew they were keeping up, he didn't need to watch them. It was more important to know where they were heading, especially considering the last time he had wandered upstairs. If those nightmares hit again... "I don't claim to be right, but there are multiple rooms around the main hallway that fits the description of where the staff might choose to spend their time - most specifically the lounge and meeting rooms. We can check there first."

And if he was wrong, he'd think of something else. One mistake wasn't going to ruin this night.

His mind paused its task of creating backup plans as the girl behind him spoke up, his eyes briefly flickering to the space at his side (as if that was where she was) before turning back ahead. Was she really that worried about what he thought? He was still a stranger to her. "I wasn't blaming you, Bella." He knew better than that.

There was a lot of movement in this hall, but it seemed mostly to be that of quietly moving patient rather than monsters. Ilia tossed her flashlight from one hand to the other, flexing her now free wrist to loosen the muscles. It was natural to be a little tense when traveling through dangerous places, but this place unnerved her unlike any other place she'd been to in her entire military career.

"From my experience, monsters tend to congregate around places that hide secrets or treasures," Ilia finally replied after much thought on Anise's cautionary words. Roak had had its share of monster-filled dungeons. Her most recent excursion had been to find the Eye of Truth, and that hadn't been the only thing waiting for them in the depths of the Purgatorium. "Is it the same around here, or do you know if there is another reason they would congregate in the same places?" Guarding escape routes or the madman behind this operation, maybe?

"What kinds of creatures can we expect to find here?" She'd fought a good deal of fell creatures and demons on Roak, and some of them had been beyond Ilia's imagination. What sort of horrors did this place hold for them?
gald_digger: (Okay but how much is that in gald?)

[personal profile] gald_digger 2010-09-06 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sometimes that happens," Anise answered as they walked. "Any time the Head Doctor or someone on the radio mentions a place, it usually means there's something guarding that room... and there isn't always a treasure or a prize when they say there is." Anise learned that the hard way, fighting her way past deadly enemies for no reward at all at some times. That was why she couldn't trust the radio anymore.

"But most of the time, monsters and the like lurk around in big, wide spaces, like the Sun Room or the rec field." She'd never really thought about why that was. Most likely, the Head Doctor was placing them in high-traffic areas on purpose, to get as many people hurt as possible. That was just the sort of bastard he was.
