Day 51: Intercom, Noon

As soon as the jingle came on through the speakers, the nurses and orderlies in the showers began frowning and urging anyone who was still washing up to hurry and finish. The nurses in the Arts & Crafts room, on the other hand, began reorganizing all the materials that had been taken out for the children and gently reminded them that they only had a few minutes left to complete their projects for the day.

"Hello again, everybody!" the Head Doctor's voice called out merrily. "It's time for another delicious Landel's meal, and this time, it's... hamburgers and hot dogs, with all the usual toppings and condiments you could ask for on such All-American cuisine! A-ha... Of course, we have french fries, cole slaw, and garden salad as possible sides, and an entire salad bar for those of you who want to stay away from the red mea– ...Right! Today, for the first time, per some suggestions, we will be offering turkey and veggie burgers and dogs as alternatives to the usual meal!

"Anyway, I hope that all sounds good! Yum. I'll be speaking to you all later!"

The intercom clicked off.

Kakashi knew that it was late in the day without opening his eyes. He felt somewhat groggy, a common symptom of sleeping in that he was starting to get used to. Shaking his head, Kakashi sat up in his bed, and opened his eyes. He understood the appeal of sleeping in, but it didn’t quite agree with him. Kakashi didn’t know how other people could do it.

“Oh, you’re awake!” A cheerful voice greeted him from across his room, and Kakashi’s eyes flew open. He stared at the woman dressed in white before him, wondering how she had snuck into his hoe without notice.. His muscles tensed, ready for a fight, and his hand groped under his pillow for a kunai. Nothing was there. Startled, he turned away from the woman, and threw his pillow aside, looking for the kunai that was not there.

“What the—” Slow realization dawned on Kakashi. He was not in his room in Konoha. He remembered getting in late from a mission, and quickly falling asleep after that. How had he woken up here? Berating himself for not noticing it before, Kakashi took in the room. It was a small room with plain walls, another bed, two closets and a dresser, and the woman who had addressed him. Very plain, nothing distinct about it, nothing to give him the slightest hint about where he was. Kakashi wondered if he was even in the Fire Country anymore.

Looking down at himself, Kakashi noticed that he was wearing some sort of strange outfit, white sweats and a giant yellow, smiling face on his shirt. It was horrifying. He checked his face with his hand, there was a mask, and he could feel something covering his left eye. It was a small relief that he was still covered. The situation at hand was troublesome enough with his mask, he wasn’t sure he’d like it without.

“Are you all right?” the woman asked, looking at Kakashi. She seemed genuinely concerened.

“Where am I?” Kakashi asked, staring at the woman. She seemed confused by his question, but her smile remained in place.

“You’re at Landel’s, David. We’ve left you sleep a little too long today, I’m afraid! That certainly won’t happen again.”

Kakashi’s eye narrowed. Landel’s? What kind of a name was that? He’d never heard of such a place within the Fire country, or outside of it. He had no need to look around the room again, the initial glance had told him that whoever was sleeping in the bed next to him wasn’t there. “My name’s not David,” he said.

The woman shook her head and continued to smile. “Well, you might not think that now, but you’ll remember soon enough.” She set slippers down next to the bed, and looked at Kakashi expectantly. After a few moments, she puffed out a breath of air, and sighed. “Really David, just put on your slippers. We’re having hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch.”

Lunch? He’d slept that long? Kakashi frowned. He’d known that he’d slept overlong, but until noon? That was nothing like his normal self. He’d had to have been drugged. But how? The situation required further information, and he was unsure how to get it. Part of him wanted to knock the woman unconscious and run as fast as he could to get away, but the cooler, more locical part of his brain reminded him that he had no idea where to run. He may have been a fool before, but he was not about to repeat that mistake.

Slipping into his shoes slowly and hesitantly, Kakashi gestured for the woman to show him the way. If he complied now, the opportunity to run might just present itself later.
