Day 51: Arts and Crafts [Second Shift]

They actually listened to some of the suggestions people put in that box? Anise thought the Head Doctor had to be joking when he said that, but she soon heard him mention something that she herself had suggested: sewing supplies. They were really going to get some? Anise could finally get a real needle, so she could make repairs to Tokunaga whenever she needed to. She swiped one of their blunt, plastic needles before, but using that just left big holes in the fabric. Using it on Tokunaga made her feel bad, like she was hurting the poor doll.

"Isn't that nice, Dolores?" The nurse must have caught Anise's hopeful look. "But remember, you'll need to be on your best behavior until then."

"I know, I..." Anise began with her usual dismissive reply, but quickly remembered that the intercom had said 'behavior and attitudes', and instantly changed her tune. "I'll do my very best! Hee hee!" She forced a smile for the old hag.

Unfortunately, the sewing supplies weren't here today, so Anise had to find something else to do for now. Stepping inside the Arts and Crafts room, she quickly found that several tables already had paper craft ('origami,' they called it?) supplies laid out for them, so she guessed she'd just occupy herself with that. The girl sat down at one of the tables, opened up one of the books, and started looking through it.

Cranes, frogs, horses, turtles... There were lots of familiar animals, and a few unfamiliar ones, too. The rabbits looked kind of cute.

The heck was this, third grade?

Kay scowled at her nurse, pulled away from the well-okay-not-that-productive conversation with Beelzewatchum, and grudgingly let herself be deposited at a table. "Why don't you draw something, Alice?" the nurse suggested, brightly, and Kay scowled darker.

"My name isn't Alice," she insisted, again, and nursey-lady patted her head, with a way-too-cheerful smile.

"Don't worry, dear, we'll make sure you get better," Nursey-lady said, and left Kay to her own devices.

Well, fine! If they were just going to leave her here, she was going to do something useful with all this kiddy craft stuff, so there! With a toss of her head, Kay went to the cupboards, ransacking them for stuff what she could use for Justice!

[Kaito! :D]

Yukari was gone.

To be honest, he wasn't sure what that meant—if she'd been sent back home where she belonged or if, like the nurse said when he'd asked after her to be sure, she had 'gotten better' and been 'released'. If it was the latter... The only thing he could guess was that she'd been brainwashed like he had that one day, and bought into the other life they tried to sell... And if that was the case, did that mean she was at least with her dad now?

Kaito had spent most of breakfast thinking about it, and he was still feeling glum when the nurse led him to the arts and crafts room afterwards. He needed to cheer up—to distract himself with something. Maybe he could make some more makeshift props for tricks, or...

...Or maybe some energetic company. The long-haired girl that was currently raiding the supply cupboards seemed like an enthusiastic choice, plus she looked to be about his own age. Putting on a grin, he came up alongside her, peering into the cabinets. "Looking for something specific?"

[identity profile] stealthetruth.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yep," she said, finally deciding on cardboard and glue and sparkly-as-heck gold glitter and a huge pile of felt and some paper before turning to flash a grin at-- oooh, he was kinda cute-- at the guy who was talking to her. "They took away my stuff, and I can't be properly dramatic and Yatagarasu-y without my scarf and my pin and stuff! Y'know?" She dropped her haul on the nearest table and stuck out her hand to Kinda Cute Guy for shaking. "Kay Faraday. I'm new."

Yatagarasu...y? Kaito recognized the name for the three-legged crow, but with the way the girl was using it, it kind of sounded like she meant something else. He didn't think she was going to be a three-legged crow, after all, (no matter how dramatic that might indeed be) unless she was actually one of those 'non-humans' that were around... And personally, he doubted that.

"I... guess?" he said as she started moving towards one of the tables. He did understand the sentiment of needing certain equipment for proper dramatics, even if he wasn't sure what she meant by the rest. Kaito took a moment to grab some tissue paper and pipe cleaners from the cabinets for himself before joining her at the table the girl was depositing her stash upon.

He was tempted to ask for some clarification right off the bat, but then she introduced herself and held out a hand towards him. He paused for a beat, setting his materials down, and then shook her hand. "Kuroba Kaito," he said. "And I've been here for a while."

Kaito pulled a chair up to the table. "Just how new are you?"

[identity profile] stealthetruth.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Nice to meet you." Kuroba Kaito! Sounded Japanese. Which made sense, he looked pretty Japanese. "And totally new, I woke up this morning and I'm not in my room and I am still totally confused 'cause the guy at breakfast was kind of not making a whole lot of sense." She seemed to be handling it pretty well, all the same; this wasn't even the worst thing that had happened this month. At least no one was actively trying to kill or arrest her! Yet!

She plunked down in a chair next to him and set into the cardboard with a pair of ridiculously annoyingly blunt scissors.

Kaito had to admit: he really liked Kay's attitude. Maybe she was only feeling so spunky because she didn't know what went on yet, but... it was refreshing, all the same. The patient body as a whole could certainly do with a little more spunk and audacity.

"Was 'the guy at breakfast' trying to tell you about what goes on around here?" Kaito asked casually, setting to work on a sheet of tissue paper, folding and twisting it to get a flower-like shape. "Because that doesn't make much sense until you have no other choice but to believe it."

[identity profile] stealthetruth.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
"A little bit about monsters? But then we kind of got distracted with him telling me he wasn't human and then I had to tell him what the Yatagarasu does and then nursey-lady dragged me over here, so we didn't actually get to talk about what the heck is going on. Well, not very much." She grinned at him, then looked down at the cardboard she was mangling into shape. "If you wanted to fill me in more, that would be totally cool," she added, chipper as anything.
flashyaudacity: (Kaito: blah blah blah)

[personal profile] flashyaudacity 2010-08-13 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
The paper flower wasn't twisting the way he wanted it to. He fiddled with it as he said, "I'd be happy to fill in more... though I've gotta say: I'm curious about this 'Yatagarasu' thing myself, especially since it involves scarves and pin and being dramatic." Especially the dramatic part.

"I've heard about some people around here not being human, but I'm not sure if I believe it, myself; they all look pretty human to me," Kaito continued, deciding to clear things up a bit first; he could hear about the Yatagarasu afterwards. "But the monsters are definitely real. You never see them during the day, but everything changes at night. The door to your room will unlock, the nurses will be nowhere in sight, and it seems like no matter where you go, you'll wake up in your room again come morning."

Ah, there it went. Satisfied with that part of the flower, he went to work on the other side.

[identity profile] stealthetruth.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, man, it is super dramatic," she informed him, with a grin, and set the cardboard and scissors and all down, drawing herself up in her chair and brushing her hair back over her shoulders. (Man, she needed like a hair tie or something.) "I," she intoned, or about as close to intoned as she could manage, "am the Great Thief Yatagarasu, stealer of truth and bringer of justice! When evil thinks itself beyond the law, I steal away their protection so they may be destroyed in the courts; and where criminals think they will go unpunished, I steal away the darkness that hides them, and expose the light of truth." She grinned, and leaned forward, propping her elbows on the table and her chin in her hands. "Or something like that, I don't have a standardized speech yet. I've just started being the Yatagarasu a couple weeks ago."

She listened to his explanation, closely, and her grin faded into a thoughtful frown. "That sounds... weird," she mused. Also unlikely, and totally irritating if true. She picked up the cardboard again, snipping at it some more.

On the other hand, maybe it was a good thing that Kay had decided to take the initiative and explain the Yatagarasu now. A really good thing.

Kaito stared at her.

It was... a noble-sounding endeavor, to be sure. He could easily understand what she was after—he himself spent his nights pursuing a similar goal, though his had a more specific target for the endgame—but just sounding good wasn't enough. She had actually come right out and told him that she was a thief, without a moment's hesitation. With that little caution, he almost had to wonder if 'the Great Thief' bit was supposed to be a metaphor.

He blinked, and then matched her grin with one of his own, resuming his work on the paper flower. "Admirable... and not a bad speech, either," he said. "But you may want to be careful who you tell it to, Ms. Great Thief... I know a couple of detectives here who may not take kindly to thieves, even if they are bringers of justice." Or maybe that grudge was reserved only for Kaitou Kid, and Kay would get along splendidly with Kudou and Hattori. At this point, he really couldn't be sure.

Do you wanna backthread? :3

[identity profile] stealthetruth.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Heeheehee, thanks!" It had been pretty good, if she may say so herself, though she probably needed to script these things, so she could hit all the high points in one speech. She hadn't put in the when no other bird dare fly thing this time, which was kinda a shame, she loved that line. "And no one really seems to take me seriously when I tell them, which is kinda annoying, but totally useful for not getting arrested." Snip snip snip aha! The cardboard was now a reasonable approximation of the Yatagarasu symbol, awesome. She smeared it with glue and bright gold glitter. "Anyway, being a thief hasn't stopped me from being best friends with detectives and prosecutors and stuff."
flashyaudacity: (Kaito: what!?)

I'd love to! \o/

"Really?" Kaito found himself asking, surprised by that. He and Hakuba were on civil terms at least (well, usually, when Hakuba wasn't trying to get in some thinly-veiled accusation about Kaito being Kid), but they were hardly best friends. And then there was Hattori, but he'd done whatever it took to try keeping Hattori in the dark...

Then again, Kay had said she'd just started. Kaitou Kid, on the other hand, had already gained an impressive reputation to live up to by the time Kaito had first donned the costume to take his father's place.

"As long as they don't take you seriously, that's great," he continued, his tone light. "I'd just hate for them to decide to arrest you all of a sudden when you were just trying to help them out."

He reached for one of the pipe cleaners he'd grabbed, and then twisted it around the bottom of the flower for a stem.

"Oh, right... one other thing. The nurses have been calling you by the wrong name, haven't they?"

"Really! I spent all last week with Gummy-- Detective Gumshoe-- and Mr. Edgeworth trying to catch the people who murdered my dad. Mostly, Mr. Edgeworth was all," and she straightened, taking up a stiff expression and deepening her voice, "'Kay, you don't need to tell everyone about it!' and telling people, 'don't worry about her,' and 'Kay! Don't talk about stealing things or I'll have to have Gumshoe arrest you!' and stuff." She giggled, brightly. "He can be such a stick-in-the-mud sometimes."

She snagged a pipe cleaner, too, and carefully attached it to the back of her cardboard pin, then attached the pin to her collar. There, now she felt a little more like the Yatagarasu! (She still needed her gloves and scarf and hair done up tall, but the pin was a good place to start.) "Yeah, they have been. I don't even know any Alices, I don't think."

Man, that sounded nice. Kaito couldn't imagine a similar situation between himself and... well... any of the detectives he knew, but it would have been welcome over all the dodging accusations. He could picture himself the last example of Kay's mimicking, maybe, but not the first two.

Then again, he didn't make a habit of telling people he'd just met about what he did.

He finished with the paper flower and tucked it away before reaching for a new sheet of paper to start anew. "They're going to try to make you think you are Alice," he explained. "Everyone here gets called by a name that isn't theirs and told that their life was made up; they've even brainwashed us some of us into believing it. They'll tell you that you're not the Yatagarasu and that the people you know aren't the people you know, like that Detective Gumshoe and—"

Wait.

"Did you say 'Edgeworth' earlier?" Kaito asked. "Miles Edgeworth?"
