Night 50: Main Hallway, 1-Center

[From here]

Unlike the western section, the central portion of this hallway was completely deserted. On any other night, von Karma would have used this to his advantage to arrive at one of the upstairs locations before anyone else did. The Janitor's Closet, for one, contained a large cache of metal that he could use to compensate Mr. Geeste for the work he would do for him three nights later.

But for now, von Karma merely had to go as far as the very first doorway to his right, which led straight into Waiting Room 1. This was far more important -- though less pleasant -- than his prospective metal scavenger hunt. Besides, by the time he had replied to Mr. Geeste's notice, Ms. Taura had already accepted an assignment from that blasted History Club. He would simply have to try to contact her tomorrow morning as soon as possible before she could accept another one.

Shaking his head, von Karma turned the door knob, expecting to have to jimmy it open, but instead discovering that the door wasn't locked after all.

Lana was prepared to just move after hearing no sounds of a struggle, but it appeared Ema wasn't. Had she heard something Lana hadn't? Whatever it was, Lana crossed back and tried not to let her impatience show beyond a single raised eyebrow. "I didn't hear anything of concern; we should be able to cross without difficulty." Her tone was clipped; businesslike, without censure but with the assurance of one who expects no argument.

Lana was used to being in charge. Very few had any sort of authority over the Chief Prosecutor, especially during an investigation. And as that man was finding his hold slipping; every lie Ema was privy to meant one fewer string. Even if the sum of them might also cut them apart, Lana couldn't argue with inevitability. Blackmail, as always, only worked when the one blackmailed had something to lose. Lana shot a glance at Ema -- make that something to lose under the control of the blackmailer. As long as she was here, Lana had everything to lose. She cleared her throat, and continued in the same tone.

"Stay behind the couches, apart from the group. Once we're through, head for the outside doors immediately. Unless you have any pertinent objections?"

That singularly raised eyebrow communicated volumes. Lana intended to move on regardless of Ema's input, preferring to take charge of the situation rather than collaborating. Well, fine. If Lana wasn't willing to actually work with her, then Ema wasn't going to even bothered sharing what she'd heard. They would rush in, waste their time, and then move on to the next possible destination.

"No objections, prosecutor." The jab was unnecessary, but it made Ema feel better as she entered the Sun Room, moving as instructed.

[and back from here]

Lana strode into the hallway, one hand tight on Ema's, and the other white-knuckled on the handle of her radio. When it crackled to life, she didn't stop. No notes, no investigation, no time for protocol. Ema was entirely right. That didn't mean she wasn't listening to the man ramble; while she had serious doubts as to his bona fides, it was no use trying to blast holes in a testimony one hadn't even taken. It just meant her stride was unbroken; that she filed what little of note there was away -- Marc, Doyleton, rings -- for contemplation after they had Agatha safely in custody.

How they intended to do that, she was carefully not thinking about.

Ema noticed the radio come to life but blatantly ignored everything the man said. Unless he was able (and willing) to explain how to undo brainwashing right then and there, which was not the case, Ema had no interest in what he had to say. Jill had been horrendously unhelpful, so why would this guy be any more reliable?

Agatha was the priority here. Already, Ema was trying to think of a plan of action. So far it consisted on crossing their fingers and hoping that they could catch her by surprise. Not a perfect plan, but it was a start. Ema was only a high school student, after all, and they had a few more halls to go before reaching her. There was still a little more time to think as they moved.
