Nightshift 49: Lil' Tyke Toys
[From here.]
Again, that strange, displaced feeling assaulted him, and Zero had to shut his eyes for a moment after crossing the threshold of whatever room they found themselves in this time. He had hoped that the door he'd just passed through would take him back to the hall he and his group had just left, but judging by the sudden increased volume of the rain outside...
He opened his eyes again and nearly cursed. Not the hall. Instead, he was facing the innards of some toy shop-- the one in Doyleton? How on Earth had they ended up here?
He looked back at the two men with him, grateful that his mask hid his thoroughly befuddled and increasingly worried expression from view. If the doors had at least been linked, they could have just kept checking until they found the one that led to the room where Nunnally had been taken. As things were-- was this completely random? Were the doors one way only? How could he be sure? He couldn't even get back to the first door he'd gone through!
"We must leave at once," he said to his men, keeping his voice calm through sheer force of will. A good commander never let his subordinates know how much a situation had rattled him, no matter how bizarre. "Keep moving. One of these doors will lead us to the correct destination."

Augh, another useless room!
A more brightly colored one, but still utterly useless! HK glared at a fluffy, caricatured doll of some variety of meatbag with brown fur and little ears, before letting out a sigh and turning to look at Lugnut. "Suggestion: through the door again?"

He headed back through the door.

Strangely enough, they didn't even appear to be in the Institute anymore. The rain outside sounded much closer, the windows showing a dim view of a street and a few slow moving figures. This was the town. The same one they'd just been to that afternoon. He hadn't visited this particular building, but there was no mistaking it.
Those outside could be dangerous, so he kept close to Zero with his weapons drawn and awaited further orders. That was, until his eyes caught sight of something on a shelf directly in front of him. Amid a pile of stuffed toys, several of them of the feline variety, was a stuffed black kitten with one white ear. Heat stared, the snatched it up without thinking. With the edge of one blade he made a slash in his pants just below the waistband and slid the push into place there, held by the elastic as if it was a belt. The leader hadn't said he couldn't, and hopefully he wouldn't. It wasn't that he cared much for it himself, but if Seraph ever...
Zero was giving directions again, and he moved to follow them. They had to leave this place and there was only one door out as far as he could see. "Watch out for the townspeople," he warned, though there was something even more off about them than there had been earlier in the day. It was just too dark to tell.

He wasn't sure anymore if any of the doors led to much of anywhere they were supposed to, but if Z said so... He followed along behind the other two, swallowing when he saw teddy bears mixed in with all the stuffed animals. His roomie'd already picked something up, but he wasn't going to. He hadn't seen any young kids here, and he didn't even wanna think about Ai and Mako ending up here. Even if he got out, he probably wasn't ever going to see them again. It was just how things were. C'mon, get a grip an' keep going! He'd faltered for a moment, but was soon right behind the others again.
