Night 49: M-A Block Hallway
[From here.]
Edgar awaited Gren a moment before starting the trek to Celes' room. Though he'd not been to the blocks where the women resided (the nurse wouldn't allow him to even go near that hall, and he had an inkling why), he had a vague idea of their whereabouts. He only hoped he could find her room quickly- in the event she was still within the institute's walls, he hoped to catch her before she wandered too far.
He clicked his light on as he walked ahead of Gren, hoping it'd be easier to keep track of him. "The doors unlock each night, as you've probably guessed. No one quite knows why. Aside from tempting us with escape, Landel releases monsters to roam the hallways. I've only seen one, but heard of many others."

So, he didn't make any remark about her lateness, instead using the silence before she spoke to weigh the pros and cons of pre-emptive action and mentally cursing that unreadability thing women were so good at. Her brief and unconvincing smile showed that she wasn't entirely okay, but that encompassed a broad range of possible emotions which could result in a broad range of tactical weaknesses. Trying to sort through them gave him a headache, though, and the more he focused the more it sharpened. Shikamaru didn't like having to rely on his ability to think quickly when danger presented itself, but in this case, he saw no alternative. He was beginning to realize that whatever was in his brain wasn't a fan of long-term planning.
He exhaled, half-stifling a yawn. "Yeah," he lied. They'd never decided what to do, and like an idiot, he'd spent the evening trying to figure out how to tell Kakashi that their current plans weren't working when he should have spent it coming up with better ones. Better than 'don't let anyone die,' anyway, and he doubted Sakura would accept not-dying as a primary mission objective. She wanted to find Landel. What was the safest way to make her think he was actually trying to find Landel?
"The basement's been searched pretty thoroughly," Shikamaru said, remembering the sand-bleeding creature. As he spoke, he turned around and walked through the cell block's open doorway.
