Day 49: Morning - Main Street

[From here.]

Easily forgiven? Unlikely. A pair of (presumably) mental patient committing theft. No, it was highly unlikely they would be easily forgiven. Conscience-wise? It wouldn't even stain his thoughts, really. Nothing like ten years of judgemental slaughter to make your mind jaded against the simpler crimes in the world.

Either way, it could prove to be... okay, he didn't want to say fun because not much about Venom was even slightly amusing (and Edward was very much ignoring the teenage part of him that was all ready to rebel), but it could prove to be adventurous. Especially since he didn't have the agility nor the power to make the feat easy. Having Alice play the stock market wasn't exactly the most hands-on way of stealing after all. It couldn't really be called stealing, after all... it was just using her naturally-created gifts to further the family's fortune.

So his morals were a little skewed. That was okay with him.

Once he'd left the polluted bus behind him - fresh air, thank god - he smiled to see the sky completely overcast, the smallest drops of water misting through the air. He shrugged into the obnoxiously bright raincoat he'd been given, tucking the coupons and the untouched breakfast into one of the pockets, covering his face with the hood. The suit he was wearing was a little worse for wear, but the vampire wasn't exactly looking forward to marching around damp.

Waiting just off to the side for Venom, Edward surveyed what he could see of the town so far. It didn't seen very big... which was good, he supposed. That way it would be easier to navigate. Now that the first order of business had been planned, they would need to find the right outlet for their theft opportunity.

Ranulf smirked at Fai's ability to subliminally renounce his latter question. While it was true that the books in this world might not all have to do with magic, the fact that the man knew what spells and tomes were only heightened his curiosity, and force the assumption that his acquaintance was anything but ordinary. In short - this guy was crafty.

Fai most likely had his own reasons for not revealing his abilities, if he possessed any. They'd barely met after all! Ranulf figured he was hiding something. Of course, the laguz also believed people should mind their own business. There were many secrets of the laguz race he'd been sworn to never reveal, and he thought it'd do well to give Fai the same respect.

This all boiled down to Ranulf nodding politely as Fai rambled a bit, and carrying on the conversation. He did, however, cock an eyebrow at Fai as a sort of signal that he was on to him but wasn't going to pry. Instead he took Fai's route and continued with the new subject.

"Ahhh... more shops? What do we use for currency though? I doubt the storekeepers will exchange anything for a stained jacket or a muddy pair of boots." he replied, laughing a bit under his breath.

Did Ranulf know he was dodging the question? It was possible he could sense magic, but that knowing look was hard to ignore. He hated to think that he'd slipped already. Dealing with Homura had been difficult enough, he didn't need another person with mismatched eyes and a calculating demeanor.

Still, if Yuuhi noticed, it certainly didn't show on his gently smiling face. He took a few steps further down the street and away from the book shop.

"The nurses should've given you a book of coupons. They're little slips of paper you can trade for services. Some are for meals and some are for services," he pulled the coupons book from his own pocket, revealing a few brightly colored tickets to various shops around town.

"As fun as books are, I was thinking of going to the salon since there's a coupon for that. Want to give it a shot?"

Fai's expression remained intact and unchanging, which only solidified that this man liked to hide things. Spoken word meant nothing in the laguz culture, it was body language that communicated everything. Fai's demeanor would certainly work on a typical beor-... human... but Ranulf wasn't exactly typical. Still, Fai's intentions didn't seem malicious at all and Ranulf appreciated his kindness and hospitality. It was rare to find that in humans, especially ones you'd nearly knocked over.

When Fai pulled out the coupon book, Ranulf's eyes widened. He'd slipped them into the front pocket of his pants as Flo had rushed him to the bus, but had they been damaged in his fall? He felt around in his pocket and let out a small sigh of relief as he pulled the booklet out, still intact. It was a bit damp, but otherwise unscathed.

"A... salon?" Ranulf asked, as he followed Fai. He gave an embarrassed smile as he asked his next question. "Heh, What... is that exactly?"

It made him a bit nervous, the way Ranulf seemed to be so conscious of every little move he made, but he'd a lot of practice in faking smiles. While it might've been wise to leave Ranulf to his own devices, running away at this point would only seem suspicious. A bit of free time could be good in clearing up any lingering doubts the man might have.

Admittedly, Yuuhi didn't frequent salons, but he still knew what they were and what kind of activities to expect. Kurogane probably wouldn't go inside one even if tempted with swords or other sharp weapons, but Ranulf didn't know any better. It was fair game.

"It's probably easier to show you than it is to explain," he tried, giving a simple shrug. "Come on, let's go."
