Dayshift 49: Bus 2

Morning hit without warning, with the sheer knowledge hitting the Digimon before anything else that today they were going back to Doyletown. Her feet hit the floor and she rotated her right shoulder experimentally. The skin stretched tight, soreness persevering, but it moved fine. She stretched her fingers then curled them into a fist, staring at the tanned skin that was her right arm. If something happened this time... She would be more useful. Her mind replayed the events of last week, and Renamon stilled, considering.

There wasn't much time left to her as the nurse bustled in with an armful of clothes, the same shade as the weeks before. The woman murmured a cheery complaint that it was too cold for skirts and left Renamon to change. The pants were preferable to the past two weeks, though the other item she was left with gave too much to irony. She frowned at it for a minute, then slid it over her head, reflecting that this motion in days or weeks past would have left her shuddering. It meant she was becoming used to this human body, and that was nothing that boded well. She grabbed her notebook before being led to a bus, and slid into a seat halfway down the aisle, pressing against the window. Again, the previous night had been more than short. Was it just her, or was there something more to it?

[for Haseo!]

Rein considered offering to go outside with her one night, but she doubted that was the sort of change Raine had in mind. You had your pick of monotony and peril; the Institute offered nothing in-between.

"At least there is the town. It would not be unusual if we were confined solely to the Institute," Reinforce pointed out. "And besides, there are wider vistas waiting for us. This will not last forever."

Cheerfulness did not come easily to her. She could only show her resolve.

"Nothing--or at least very little--does, but this is probably still going to last a long time." Raine sighed a little. "I know it's hard to deal with for everyone, but this is exactly the kind of place I nearly ended up in as a child." She wasn't sure she'd mentioned that since Reinforce's reappearance, but she might as well explain if she hadn't before; she couldn't get it out of her mind anyway.

One of the things that bothered her the most was not knowing why she was here. Was she convenient to grab somehow, or just like last time she had been wanted for a specific purpose? Knowing the answer would give her no peace, but it still bothered her a lot.

No, she hadn't, though Rein wasn't surprised she might not have thought to reintroduce every detail. She certainly understood how to Raine she and her past iteration must seem the same person... and that it was probably easier, too, not to dwell too long on the difference.

"Did you?" She asked. You could empathize with feeling only, to a degree, but she preferred to understand. So often she could only nod and grope for words of comfort, and that was a failing.

"Thanks to my parents' efforts, I was never in that lab as a prisoner like here," Raine said with a shake of her head. "I've seen it, but that was on the Journey of Regeneration with Colette." If they could still call their journey that; she badly wished she had some idea how things were going at home. Kratos' one update had helped a little, but it wasn't enough.

"So, do you have any special plans for today?" In other words, Raine wanted to know if Reinforce had any ideas for acquiring weapons just in case. Taking knives from Twin Pines was unfortunately not feasible, and she couldn't think of much else.

"I have none," Rein admitted. She was knowledgeable in many things, but the methods of common thievery were definitely not among them. The great mages and lords of Belka had certainly not valued such skills... at least not openly. To add to the difficulty, when improvising weapons weight and leverage were of great importance and both contributed to making anything potentially useful all but impossible to conceal for any length of time.

"Will you want to visit the bookstore again?" She asked... perhaps a bit hopefully. They had discovered the selection to be poor but her affinity for the atmosphere it provided had survived the disappointment.

At that, Raine smiled. "If I ever say no, consider it cause to be very worried." They'd gotten a good look at it by now, but her interest wasn't going to wane until they'd read every book in the store.

And while they might not have any ideas for self-defense now... one of the books they read just might spark something useful.
