Day 48: Courtyard [Fourth Shift]

So much for a relaxing shower. Anise couldn't possibly relax around someone with a voice like that! This was beyond weird. How could a girl who didn't have any relation to Sync have the exact same voice as him?

And what made it even weirder was that this wasn't even the first time Anise had encountered something like that. There was a boy, who also had tattoos like hers, who sounded just like Luke. What was his name? It was so long ago, Anise couldn't remember. Maybe she'd know it if she heard it again, but...

That gave her an idea. She wasn't using her journal for much besides cooking notes, recipes, and a few room numbers, right? Maybe from now on, whenever she saw or heard something really strange or suspicious, she'd write it down. Then, if it happened again or she learned more about it, she could look back to the entry and add the details. She'd call it... 'Anise's Mystery Diary.' That sounded kind of cool!

During the lunch shift, Anise worked on putting as many memories as possible to paper. The radio man, the rumored third floor, the ruins she found last night, things like that. By the time fourth shift rolled around, she wasn't quite done yet. It was getting harder to think of more things to write about, even though she was sure there were hundreds of mysteries in the institute. Maybe she'd feel more inspired if she took her writing outside.

"Oh, Dolores!" A nurse came to stop her as she was walking out the door. "If you're going outside, you should put on a coat! We wouldn't want you catching a cold." Even though Anise disliked being assisted by the nurses, she cooperated as the woman helped her into the coat, quickly putting Tokunaga back in its place on her back when they were finished. It did look kind of cold out, so there was no point in arguing.

Outside, Anise found herself a bench to sit on while she wrote some more in her journal. Occasionally she'd pause and fidget with the pen for a bit, or doodle some stars and other shapes into the corner of the page she was on, unsure of what to write next.

Well, fewmets. Keman ducked his head, embarrassed, as he recalled the meeting he was supposed to have gone to a few nights back. Honestly, he almost wished he'd been attacked; at least then he would have had a good excuse. Artemis had been waiting, and Keman simply hadn't been there.

"I slept through the night," he said, shaking his head. "It seems so stupid, but there you go. I couldn't make it because I was asleep. And then there was the whole debacle with our 'real lives,' meaning that I went around thinking I was someone called Calvin for a day and a night." He sighed. "Those two combined, and I'm afraid it went completely out of my head. I'm sorry, Artemis. I let you down and I apologize. I hope you'll let me make it up to you?"

After all, it was the very least he could do.

Artemis nodded. "It's alright, please don't apologize. We all need our rest." He smiled lightly. The intent wasn't to make Keman feel as though he'd failed, though Artemis was glad that the dragon was asking to make it up to him. He was still curious about the possibility of pulling magic out of him, and he needed it now more than ever.

"And I'm sorry you were pulled into that... strange day. I was a victim of it myself. It seems the doctor was conspiring against us that day.

"Though I'm still curious to see if you would be able to help... especially now. It's getting to the point where I'm starting to feel slightly insane at points, and I'd rather not that happened. I tend to do dangerous things when I'm not thinking straight."

Keman sighed. "It seems so. Still, horrible mental trauma aside, being Calvin was...interesting, to say the least. I gained insights on this world that I certainly wouldn't have otherwise." It could be useful, if it ever came down to it. If it turned out that Shana, Valyn, Orihime, and the others had not gone back home and had, in fact, successfully been brainwashed into thinking that they were these people the Institute claimed they were, he'd be able to blend in better and try to find them. Bring them back.

The dragon looked over at Artemis for a moment, considering all he knew about magical transfer. It was, admittedly, not much, and all of it was second-hand from Valyn and Shana. Still, he'd thought that he could do it a week ago and his mind hadn't changed since then. "Of course I'll help! I'll try, at any rate." What Artemis had said, about everything the magic was doing to him was worrying. No, beyond worrying. Downright scary.

"I'll do all I can, Artemis."
