Day 48: Courtyard [Fourth Shift]

So much for a relaxing shower. Anise couldn't possibly relax around someone with a voice like that! This was beyond weird. How could a girl who didn't have any relation to Sync have the exact same voice as him?

And what made it even weirder was that this wasn't even the first time Anise had encountered something like that. There was a boy, who also had tattoos like hers, who sounded just like Luke. What was his name? It was so long ago, Anise couldn't remember. Maybe she'd know it if she heard it again, but...

That gave her an idea. She wasn't using her journal for much besides cooking notes, recipes, and a few room numbers, right? Maybe from now on, whenever she saw or heard something really strange or suspicious, she'd write it down. Then, if it happened again or she learned more about it, she could look back to the entry and add the details. She'd call it... 'Anise's Mystery Diary.' That sounded kind of cool!

During the lunch shift, Anise worked on putting as many memories as possible to paper. The radio man, the rumored third floor, the ruins she found last night, things like that. By the time fourth shift rolled around, she wasn't quite done yet. It was getting harder to think of more things to write about, even though she was sure there were hundreds of mysteries in the institute. Maybe she'd feel more inspired if she took her writing outside.

"Oh, Dolores!" A nurse came to stop her as she was walking out the door. "If you're going outside, you should put on a coat! We wouldn't want you catching a cold." Even though Anise disliked being assisted by the nurses, she cooperated as the woman helped her into the coat, quickly putting Tokunaga back in its place on her back when they were finished. It did look kind of cold out, so there was no point in arguing.

Outside, Anise found herself a bench to sit on while she wrote some more in her journal. Occasionally she'd pause and fidget with the pen for a bit, or doodle some stars and other shapes into the corner of the page she was on, unsure of what to write next.

[apologies for fail-tastic slow-post >.< ]

Chise's face was just as red as the flowers she fell into after Fai's affectionate teasing. "I-It's just me! A-And I don't think you can grow people from flowers...unless there's a magic spell for that."

After taking his offered hand and brushing the dirt from her clothes, she was surprised to see the eye-patch.

"Fai...when did you get that?"

[it's ok! There's always backthreads X3]

He helped her up, managing to stay steady on his feet. While he knew it was only a matter of time before she asked about the injuries, it was becoming almost like a game to think of new ways to explain what had happened (not that any of them were actually true).

"I don't think I've ever heard of any spell like that. But that's why it's magic, right? It can't always be explained," he smiled, the same as always, pretending to be startled when she asked about the eyepatch.

"Oh this? Well I saw a few other patients wearing them, so I thought I'd try it out and see if the pirate look suited me. What do you think? Can I pull it off?" he asked, offering up a few poses to go with it.

[back thread of awesome it shall be]

Chise's spirits fell when she heard the word "pirate" and her concern about Fai's eye were pushed aside. She tried to smile at the poses Fai was making, but it was half-hearted.

"Fai, you've been here longer than I have right? Is it true that people disappear from this place? Yesterday on the board I read that one of my friends was no longer here."

While she didn't seem so easily convinced, at least the subject could move along to other things. She hadn't asked further and he wasn't providing any answers. Probably for the best. Her other question though, was perhaps not as difficult, but it certainly wasn't an easy one to answer. It reminded him of those he'd known that'd disappeared. Sakura, his Sakura had been here for a couple of days before she vanished. He couldn't sense her anywhere. Then it'd been Orihime and Ururu and...

"Sometimes," he said finally. "But sometimes they come back too. Or sometimes they come visit. Just because they're gone, you shouldn't give up on them." Easy enough to say, but hard to take his own advice. He blamed himself for much of what'd happened to Sakura before and his inability to find her. He'd still never reached that third floor, at least, not that he could recall, but there'd been the strange room from a few nights ago that he'd woken up in. Where had that been?
