Day 48: Courtyard
"I could tell you some stories," Yuffie suggested brightly, "of unquestionable legality." Illegality, that was. Petty little things like the law didn't usually mean very much to her, except for the times when she had to uphold it. Always fun for the breaking, though, the law, and messy for the clean-up. Just the way she liked it.
Her nurse looked like she wanted to rub her temples. With sandpaper. "No, thank you," she said instead. "Why don't you run along, now?" Please!, was the unspoken request. Before I spontaneously combust. Or commit various acts of violence that would have me arrested, or placed in a loony bin. Like this one. Yuffie had quite a bit of fun filling in the blanks other people left. Sometimes she did it outloud, just to see the reaction; sometimes she kept it to herself. It really, really depended.
"Don't mind if I do!"
She took off, bolting out into the Courtyard. The weather was dour, overcast and threatening rain, but Yuffie didn't care. She'd refused a coat on principle, and had found herself bargaining: Fine, fine, Plucky had conced she could go without a coat, but unless she had at least a sweatshirt on, there'd be no outside-time for her. She ran a little ways down the dirt path, then toppled herself into a series of cartwheels. Straighten, run. Cartwheel. Straighten, run, just for the sheer sake of movement, and the whip of the wind. She laughed a little giddily, checking her gait down to a jog. Gawd, Leviathan, she'd needed this. Right from the get-go, she'd needed this. Every day she spent cooped up in side, the more nervous energy she had.
Nanaki had helped, she realized. Sort of. He'd…helped. In a way. His presence and everything that was wrong with it weighed on her, for sure, but he was still Nanaki. He didn't deserve to be here, didn't deserve to be stuck in a body that he hated and couldn't use, but all the same, she found herself glad to have him.
Yuffie started to hum, as she jogged leisurely around the Courtyard. A cheery little tune, one of her favorites; no, it was her favorite. A Wutaian walking song, with the roughly translated title of Pathway After the Rain. The pace stayed even but the tune picked up, and she found herself half-singing snatches of the lyrics to herself. It felt like ages since she'd last said anything in her native tongue, at least outloud; she wrote in it all the time.

Sechs nodded to the other man's introduction. He noticed there was a hint of strain behind the smile, but Sechs didn't expect anyone to just beam with sincere happiness in a place like this... Although the name made the Replica wonder if Abe was just not used to a human body...
Sechs risked a moment of exposure to the cold to briefly scratch at an itch under his chin. "Hmm... Well, Doyleton isn't much really..." he answered with a shrug as he returned his hand back into his coat pocket. "Well, except when all hell breaks loose at night..." A grim smile crept into his lips. "When me and the other prisoners here got dumped in that town, the morons running the institute forgot to pick us up and left everyone behind to tons of zombies that took over the place when night came 'round..."
The faint smile faded back into a bitter scowl. "So uh... I guess anything else than that stupid zombie-infested town would be nice..." Glaring up at the miserable sky, he muttered under his breath, "...like a way back home..."
After a moment of glowering, Sechs brought his gaze back down towards Abe. "Speaking of places, where do you come from?" This time Sechs refrained from asking if the other prisoner knew about the Scrapyard and the two orbital cities above it. Sechs didn't want to put himself up for disappointment again. Although, there was always the chance that Abe might describe a place Sechs could recognize...

"New Jersey, in America. It's not the most pleasant place in the world but it's far better than here." He took a moment to stare wistfully at the grey skies and remember the faint odor of the factories along the Jersey Turnpike, the sound of New York's constant cars and horns, and the heaving darkness of the subway tunnels. It was strange what familiar things became wonderful in retrospect.

Sure enough, Abe's response was miles (or even dimensions for that matter) from what Sechs was hoping for. His shoulders slumped slightly and he turned his gaze back at the obstinate wall before him.
A quiet hollow chuckle escaped him. "Heh, I come from the Scrapyard, and even that place is better than here, and that's saying much!" As lousy and dangerous as that slum surrounding Tiphares' giant pile of garbage was, at least Sechs was fully free and able-bodied enough to fend for himself there just fine. Unlike here...
Spotting a large pebble sitting in the grass, Sechs prowled over towards it and gave it a swift kick, sending it harmlessly ricocheting off the wall. "I don't know 'bout New Jersey though..." he let out a gruff sigh through his scruffy hair, "I did hear of a New York or something..."
Sechs took a few more steps closer to the wall and stared it down -- or more it stared him down -- before bringing his attention to the multitude of vines that trailed its roughened surface. He grasped a handful of the creeping plants and gave them a good tug. "Hmph... Seems climbable..." Sechs grumbled to himself.
The impulse to scramble up the wall was almost unbearable for Sechs to resist, but a quick glance over his shoulder reminded him of the nurses scouring the area, including one with a pair of Orderlies who was now directing her evil eye in Sechs' general direction. With a snarl, Sechs turned away from the wall but not without tearing a fistful of vines off their rocky perch. Damnit... Maybe if he waited until nightfall to try a little scramble on the wall...
With that little personal investigation confirmed to himself, Sechs slouched over towards Abe and cocked his head towards the wall behind him. "I bet ya if you try climbing over that when night comes 'round you'll be able to find out what else is out there..."
Sechs doubted there would be pleasant places for sight seeing beyond the institute's boundaries, but if it lead to escape, then the travel would surely be worth it...

"Assuming this place, too, isn't warped by the night," Abe noted, idly watching the human's feeble attempts at climbing over the wall. A formal organization, with one group distracting the nurses while the other headed over the wall, might be effective and it seemed surprising that nobody had instituted a group uprising yet. It seemed the most logical option.
Heh. Logic in this mad place, what was Abe thinking. He folded his arms and watched the nurses until they lost interest and moved their interest elsewhere.
