Nightshift 47: West Wing, North Hallway 1-B

[from here]

The next hallway looked only marginally different from the first. Boy, it was easy to get all mixed up in this goofy hospital! And Naruto hadn't seen a single med-nin come along to try and convince him to get back to bed and rest. It wasn't that he was complaining or anything, but wasn't that weird? Where the hell were the med-nin, anyway? You'd think that in the middle of the night after a ton of people got hurt, they'd all be busy...

Oh. Well, okay. They were all busy with people who were actually hurt! That made the most sense, and Naruto accepted that and pressed on.

Still, something was bugging him. Something was seriously screwed up about this whole thing, but he couldn't figure out what the "something" was. Maybe he was imagining it, but he really didn't think he was.

Now where was the exit?

Asuka snorted at the mention of alchemy, knowing what a bunch of hooey that stuff was. Okay, yes, yay it helped to expand the periodic chart and practically started chemistry and blah blah, but it still didn't excuse the fact that people were just retarded.

"Death gods? Pfff!" Well, she had heard worse. Junpei's preceding comments about his roommate eeked out a genuine laugh from the little redhead as her pale hand came up to hide her mouth. She hadn't actually had much to smile about since the last time she had actually been at school with her friend Hikari. It all seemed so far away in this place, as if time were stuck in a vacuum.

Junpei had started to yammer again, but nothing was really sinking in until she heard something about "hardcore badasses". Why, she was a hardcore badass. The second child turned her eyes up at Junpei with avid interest, though she didn't enjoy the importance he had placed on age. There was a lot she wanted to scream at him about that, but Asuka just turned her face away instead, a scowl beginning to form on her round face. "Age is just a social construct..." She mumbled moodily. The characteristics of age and the responsibility they held fluctuated throughout history. Saying they only allowed adults into this club was negligible. She may only be fourteen, but she was smarter, more mature, and capable than people over the age of twenty. She had graduated from college already for Chrissake!

She wouldn't forget this. Asuka would find the leader and teach him a thing or two about adults.

"Yeah, I agree," Junpei replied to Asuka's mumbled words, easily picked up in the quiet of the night and the girl's proximity to him.

He grinned. "That's why you find ways around it," he said, knowing he'd kind of found that loophole.

"Indeed," was all Asuka said, and the pair fell into silence as they walked. Noticing they had gone left instead of right (and a bit belatedly, she chastised. That's what she got for talking instead of paying attention), the redhead piped back up with another question. "So how much of the institute have you actually explored?"

"Almost all of the first floor and a bunch of the second floor," Junpei replied. "Me and a few friends went over the walls one night." And got chased by a scary-ass bear.

Opening the door, Junpei lead Asuka out into the rec field.
