Day 47: Recreational Field [Fourth Shift]
Ema let the nurse lead her through the facility and out into the recreational field. She wished the nurse hadn't have taken the journal out of her hands to be left in the room--there was quite a bit to take in and Ema's hands were itching to record every little detail. If she was, in fact, kidnapped in order to prevent Lana from being proven innocent, then she was going to have to pass along everything she possibly could to Mr. Wright the instant she managed to get free.
However, that hypothesis was starting to fall apart, as much as Ema wasn't quite ready to let it go. The nurse had called her "Marie," for starters, and it was becoming increasingly obvious that Ema was not the only prisoner. This was a rather large facility, and there were several cells (dormitories?) that lined even the halls the nurse led her through. And then there was that comment that her family had admitted her. That made the least sense of all; Lana couldn't have done this to her to get her out of the way of the trial.
Could she? Lana was really well-connected; it wasn't likely, but it was possible. The thought made Ema a bit sick to her stomach. The two of them didn't get along these days, sure, but to have her kidnapped and locked up somewhere? That was just cruel. Her sister was not cruel. She hoped.
Maybe it was better that Ema didn't have her notebook. She was too lost in her own thoughts to really take in her surroundings. Before she knew it, the nurse opened the door to the recreational field, smiled down at her, and told her to go have fun. Wearing the same smile, she gave a warning not to try running off--there were people watching, and this place was for her own good. There went that idea.
New plan: talk to other prisoners (patients?) and see what the heck was going on. Ema strode past the nurse and into the field, hoping that she wasn't going to be forced to actually do anything physical while outside. Sports were not her thing, and that was the last thing she wanted to be put through after the day she'd had so far.

By the time she made her way outside, she could already spot the nurses helping a woman with brown, braided hair set up a volleyball net. Utena hadn't been able to see all that clearly in the dark of nightshift, but from what she could remember (very tall, athletic build, braided hair), she figured that the woman had to be Taura. She smiled widely and started jogging toward the net. "Ooooi, Taura!" she called out, waving as she approached. She slowed to a stop, then asked, "It's Taura, right?" to be certain that she had the right person. "I'm Utena. Nice to meet you in the sunlight where we can actually see each other," she greeted with a short laugh. "Thanks for getting things set up, by the way. Volleyball should be great for the group size we're going to have."

Taura waved, smiling back. In the daylight, Utena looked younger -- now the conversation on the bulletin made a little more sense. No younger, or not much, than Taura had been when she'd signed up with the Dendarii, but she hadn't had a choice about growing up. Not after they'd taken all of them back to the lab before childish impulse and super-strength caused an incidents among the foster families. Not out of concern for the families, or for their charges. Because publicizing what was already most of the way towards being a profitless boondoggle at best was not Bharaputra policy. Her smile hadn't slipped -- what had happened, had happened, and she had found her place after all.
"Is that what this is?" Taura's eyes went back to the winch she was turning, pulling the net into place. The top was less than a foot above her head -- she reached up easily and twanged the top rope. It seemed taut enough, though for what she wasn't quite sure. "How does it work? I thought this was a goal at first, but it's not. One team on each side?"

At first, Anthy was determined merely to watch. She had an inkling that would not sit right with Utena, though, and for all her lack of knowledge when it came to sports even she understood that teams required an equal number of players on each side. In any case, it was nice to get outside for a change. Anthy strolled onto the green field and spotted Utena immediately, smiling in greeting as she approached the two young women who were standing by a net.
"It's a nice day for this, isn't it?" She settled her friendly gaze on the patient from last night; they still didn't know each other, but Anthy recognized her easily enough. The one that ran rather than fought had been an older man.
"I never caught your name, I'm afraid. I'm Anthy."

Utena was confused for a moment that Taura didn't know what volleyball was, but then she remembered the woman saying something about a spaceship on the bulletin board. She hadn't really registered that at the time, but now she realized that Taura was probably from some future time. Maybe volleyball didn't exist anymore? That was a disappointing thought if it was true. Oh well, maybe she could bring the game back with her when they all escaped, she thought with a smile.
"Mm-hm, yep! One team per side. It's a pretty flexible game. We could play one-on-one, two-on-one, or two-on-two depending on who all shows up," Utena explained. As she was talking, she spotted a nurse heading their way with the last thing they needed - the volleyball itself. She thanked the older woman quickly and took the ball, then started to explain the basics of the game to Taura. All the while, she tossed the ball lightly up and down in one hand; she was restless to really get her body moving again, and when she got restless, she often felt the need to stretch or do something with her hands/feet.
She was just about to show the woman what a serve was supposed to look like when she caught sight of a very welcome face approaching. "Himemiya! You decided to come!" she said with a bright smile. Sports had never really been Himemiya's thing; had letting her hair down and leaving Ohtori inspired her to get more active as well, Utena wondered? Even if she was just joining in to be with a friend for the shift, that was enough for Utena. She wanted to be with Himemiya as well.

Here, the deck wasn't so much stacked as just poorly shuffled, and height offered less of an advantage than speed or precision. Precision Taura wasn't sure she still had, though it was better found out here than by walking into another broken hip or worse.
"Howdy. I'm Taura, if you hadn't guessed." She was stretching as she talked, one arm bent above her head. "We're expecting a fourth, right?"

There! Done! As soon as her nurse led her out the door, Harley broke away from her at a run, a little kid unleashed in a park. She laughed with success and ignored any protests the stiff might have offered. Instead, she focused on searching the field for her playmates. She was't sure how many people were coming or even who she was playing with for the most part. But she knew one of them was Tennie, and that girl was extremely easy to spot. In fact, there she was! Bright pink hair at two o'clock!
Next to her were two other girlies and a volleyball net. Easy enough to tell these were all her playmates for the afternoon! She ran right for the little group without the smallest reservation, finally bouncing to a stop once she was next to them. She threw both hands up in the hair, enthusastically greeting them all. "Hiiii!" she sang out happily. "Who's ready to get flattened? ...I mean, play?" Grin.

Fancy that! There she was now, Utena thought as the flurry of blonde and gray bounded their way. "Harley! Glad you could make it!" she greeted enthusiastically, catching the ball in both hands now that all of the players they needed had shown up. "I know I'm ready to play if everyone else is!"
With her being the common link between all the people present, Utena did a quick round of introductions so that everyone knew everyone else's names. Stemming from that same fact, there didn't seem to be an obvious way to split the teams. Thus, it was decided they would draw randomly to do the split; it seemed the fair thing to do. Four blades of grass were plucked from the field, two short and two long. Utena held the blades in her hand, obscuring the lengths, and each person drew a blade in turn.
"Okay, I got short," said Utena. "Who else got short?" She looked around at the others, spotting that Taura had the other short blade. She grinned across at the woman. "Guess you and I are teammates, then! Looking forward to it!" Her gaze shifted to Himemiya then. "And I guess that means you and Harley are together. That work for you guys?" she asked to be sure that everyone was okay with the split.

Then she jogged back to near the center, leaving it up to Utena to start the game off or hand the ball over to the other side.

Which was perhaps lucky for the pink-haired girl. She laid an especially friendly smile on Harley to detract from allowing her to realize her fate too soon.
Anthy wandered to the other side of the net, taking a spot facing opposite to Taura. She neglected to assume a defensive or particularly sporty position just yet, though Utena had the ball. "Is this the right place to be?"
no subject
She gave Taura a nod and a grin as she held the ball ready in one hand. "Ready? Here it comes!" Utena tossed the ball into the air and moved her hands into position under it for the first serve. She sent it over the net lightly for now, just so everyone could get warmed up and get a feel for the other players first.
