Nightshift 22: 2nd floor, top of stairs by the medical reference library

(from here)

"I'll take your word for it," Jack said. "All I ate was the cake." And as cake went, it had been pretty good, he had to admit.

And then they were at the top of the stairs. He hugged the inside wall for a moment, before slowly easing out into the new hallway, listening for anything untoward.

So far, so good.

"Looks like we have three choices," he said quietly over his shoulder. "Left, right, or straight."

Obi-Wan had only been to the second floor once since his arrival. That had been this morning when he was escorted to the chapel. It wasn't difficult to locate the stairs by any means. He did find it a little challenging to maneuver up the stairwell in a quiet, cautious manner while lugging a chair and a glowrod at the same time. But Obi-Wan made sure to take his time as he and Qui-Gon drew closer to the second floor.

It was better to move slowly if it meant they weren't going to get caught by something unsavory.

When the two Jedi finally reached the door leading to the second floor, the first thing Obi-Wan noticed was a terrible stench that heavily hung in the air. If his hands hadn't have been full, he might have clapped a hand over his nose. Thankfully, he didn't have weak gagging reflexes.

Still, that didn't account for what was on the other side of the door. Obi-Wan carefully cracked the door open, his senses carefully tuned to his surroundings. He didn't sense any sort of void lurking around, so he wasn't entirely worried about getting ambushed.

When he finally pushed the door open all the way, he was greeted by a stronger wave of the stench, blood smeared all over the floor, and a single, rotting spider corpse. Obi-Wan grimaced at the sight, and he swallowed hard as his gaze swept around the area to make sure there weren't any human bodies lying around.

There weren't. It looked like whoever killed the creature had managed to get away.

Obi-Wan knew they needed to be on their guard. If there was a dead spider here, it would stand to reason there were more creatures lurking about.

Following after Obi-Wan, and trying to get used to the idea of the chair he lugged with him as a weapon, the smell assaulted his senses as his former apprentice opened the door. It wasn't quite enough to force him to cover his nose and try to filter it out, but it was certainly getting there. Blood and entrails were splattered across the floor, worked its way up to the walls and he wouldn't have been surprised it some had managed to get its way on the ceiling. It took a long moment to recognize the corpse on the floor was a similar breed to that spider they'd seen earlier.

Something had torn it apart.

Probably wouldn't be a good idea to stick in the area, not if something had mauled through a spider that easily. Blood also tended to attract other...unsavory creatures, and he didn't care to see just what kind of carrion eaters Earth had.

Doing his best to ignore the putrid spider corpse now, Obi-Wan glanced around them. They had three choices of where to go: left, forward or right. He knew where the chapel was, but that didn't account for all of the other doors and hallways that made up the second floor.

"Maybe we should start from the eastern part of the floor and work our way across," Obi-Wan quietly suggested. "It might be a little time consuming, but at least we'd get a better feel for the building's layout. Besides, we're bound to come across something at some point." He glanced over at the Jedi Master. "Unless, of course, you'd prefer splitting up."

Despite how dangerous that suggestion probably was, Obi-Wan knew they'd cover more ground that way. After all, they were trying to find more information about Anakin's supposed abduction. He suspected they didn't want to waste much time if they could help it.

Still, he wasn't about to go calling any shots without Qui-Gon's input.

Qui-Gon briefly considered splitting up. More ground could be covered, but it also left them decidely vulnerable, especially with their Force abilities so weakened. If it weren't for that factor, Qui-Gon would have sided with the idea of splitting up, but he recalled all too well that incident with the spider. Traveling together was dangerous and risky enough - splitting up seemed to border on suicidal. Qui-Gon shook his head.

"We should stick together," he replied. While he certainly wanted to find out about Anakin, he had to admit that the best course wasn't to strike out alone.

If they ran into whatever ripped through that spider, their chances would be improved (even if they were small to begin with) if they worked as a team. Seperating right now seemed like it was asking for trouble.
