Nightshift 22: 2nd floor, top of stairs by the medical reference library

(from here)

"I'll take your word for it," Jack said. "All I ate was the cake." And as cake went, it had been pretty good, he had to admit.

And then they were at the top of the stairs. He hugged the inside wall for a moment, before slowly easing out into the new hallway, listening for anything untoward.

So far, so good.

"Looks like we have three choices," he said quietly over his shoulder. "Left, right, or straight."

"Yeah..." Ritsuka kept staring up at the door, annoyance starting to creep into his posture. He felt so useless! How did Soubi always get into places that were locked? That man had always been able to get inside, but Ritsuka had never asked how. He leaned down and looked at the lock more closely. All they had were pens and flashlights. "Flashlights! We can try to hit the lock with the end of one of them. What about that?"

"The flashlight might break before the lock." Seimei said. "And this is our only real weapon for the moment, unless we somehow find another. Still. We might find something of more use inside."

He turned off the flashlight then positioned it over the lock. He drew back and struck the thing soundly, feeling it give slightly.

"It is weak." But the noise had been very, very loud, and he straightened to look around, seeing if it had drawn any attention.

While Seimei looked about, Ritsuka decided it was time to do his part. Grabbing the knob, he threw his shoulder against the door and pushed hard, hoping the hit beforehand had jolted the lock enough to let him break in. If they could get the door open quickly, they might be able to get inside before anything came from the hall.

His first attempt didn't do much but loosen the lock a little more, so he tried again, throwing himself heavily against the door. For a moment he thought he'd just bounced off it again, but no - the lock snapped and the door swung open. One hand still on the knob, he swung around with it, letting go just in time to fall backwards into the room with a soft thump. Rubbing his back, he drew in a sharp breath, closing his eyes at the shock of it. "Ow..."

Well, at least the door was open.

"Ritsuka." Seimei slipped into the room and closed the door, then offered his little brother a hand up.

"Are you hurt?" He asked, glancing around the room they'd found themselves in. "Let us wait a moment and listen, to make certain that there has been no attention drawn by our efforts."

And if this gave Seimei a chance to cuddle Ritsuka in the dark, then all the better, for he held his sibling very close.
