Nightshift 22: 2nd floor, top of stairs by the medical reference library

(from here)

"I'll take your word for it," Jack said. "All I ate was the cake." And as cake went, it had been pretty good, he had to admit.

And then they were at the top of the stairs. He hugged the inside wall for a moment, before slowly easing out into the new hallway, listening for anything untoward.

So far, so good.

"Looks like we have three choices," he said quietly over his shoulder. "Left, right, or straight."

Chase had nearly been to the right-hand junction when the spider moved. He caught it in his peripheral vision and saw it lurch away from the now-closed door, straight towards the third and final man nearby. A man left alone to suffer with something gigantic and clearly enraged - even if he had nothing left of his powers, Chase could still easily tell when an animal was lost to one of its base emotions.

Then again, it was missing a leg. Anybody would be angry about that.

But it hadn't seen him. As long as he kept his flashlight off and moved silently, it would hopefully stay that way. With a faint sneer in the direction of the closed door, the man, and the spider, Chase continued slipping away down the hall, not caring if he was seen retreating and cursed out for it.

After all, he was evil.

Xemnas had been abandoned to his fate, it seemed. The massive, crazed spider bored down on him, intent on devouring the Nobody to sate its maddened hunger. Even weakened by blood loss, it scrambled towards him with pincers spread wide....

But the blood of the spider had attracted another beast, one of its kin. Larger and healthy, it dropped down from the shadows above, legs tangling with the legs of the maimed spider. The two behemoths fell upon one another, screaming and twisting in a sickening dance of rotting flesh and black blood. Distracted from any two legged prey, the two engaged in battle, ignoring Xemnas....

For the moment.

The Superior still continued to move backwards as the spider closed in on him with pincers spread wide. At this rate, he'd reach a wall and get cornered.

His mind was still working on a plan as he noticed the second spider decent from the shadows. Xemnas' situation wasn't improving much with a second monster to deal with. That was, until the second fell on top of the first. In a mess of tangled legs, both creatures engaged in battle.

Xemnas was intelligent enough to see an opportunity when it presented itself. As the two undead creatures battled, ignoring him altogether, the Nobody took his chance and ran as fast as his legs could carry him further down the hallway.
