Day 46: Sun Room

Peter woke up suddenly, his body twisting in the bed and then forcing him to catch his breath in pain. Pain, which was coming from his middle because of the thing that had scratched him last night, and after that...

After that, Zach had jumped in front of him like some kind of martyr, like the exact opposite of everything Sylar stood for, to take the next hit for him. It got pretty fuzzy after that, so night must have ended right around then.

The man let out a pained grunt as he straightened himself up in bed. For some reason, he got the feeling that he'd slept in. There was no way for him to really tell without a window in the room, but he just knew. The fact that Sam's bed looked long since vacated was another clue.

Sam, but was he Sam again? Had the brainwashing worn off, as he and Roland had hoped, or was he going to have to go through this nightmare for even longer? He didn't know how long he could handle "Zach" and "Harrison" before he started going batty himself.

Pulling himself out of bed, Peter lifted his shirt and saw that he was tightly bandaged. The scratch most likely wasn't nearly as bad as the bite that "Zach" had received, but it still smarted. He let his shirt fall and then had to deal with a nurse chiding him for sleeping through the morning announcements. Not that Peter really cared at the moment. He was too busy thinking about last night and the fact that in a way, he now owed something to Sylar. Except it hadn't been Sylar. That was something he was sure of now.

Lost in his thoughts, Peter reached the Sun Room right as the rest of the patient populace was trickling in from breakfast. Sighing to himself, he headed over to the bulletin board and then saw a note written in familiar yet unpleasant handwriting. Holding his pen in a vice grip, Peter scribbled out a reply and then stalked over to an armchair and fell into it with a huff.

While Sylar was maddeningly frustrating, there was one good thing about the fact that he was himself again. It meant that Nathan was too.

[For Spock!]

Maybe it was selfish, but Kagura was feeling a lot better after breakfast, while Ritsu was probably... well... he'd be alright, wouldn't he? Maybe she ought to tell the nurses about the secret technique for calming him down when he had one of his fits. They were a lot more likely to just try their needles and... well... that wouldn't end well either.

The nurse cut their conversation short and she hoped things would turn out alright. It might take a bit longer, but she could pick up Ritsu and Bridget and they could go out tonight together if they had to go out at all. At least, that was the plan. Those didn't always turn out the best either.

There were few familiar faces when she entered the room, though whether that was because there were more people vanishing and being replaced by new ones or just that some were taking longer with their breakfast, she wasn't really sure. She hoped it was the second one though. At least there was one familiar face that was easy to spot with that mess of bright red hair. Kind of like how Kyo or Yuki or the others were usually so easy to spot in a crowd.

She walked over and stood in front of the couch, trying not to fidget nervously as she approached. "Ah- Reno-san. I- U-um... if it's alright... Would you like some company?"

Reno cracked open an eye and glanced over at the sound of the vaguely familiar voice to see that girl from yesterday. His first thought was, That's not Rude, and his second was, Close enough.

Well, in terms of being company, that was. Obviously. He couldn't quite bitch to this chick, but he could occupy his time which was about as good as it was gonna get around here these days.

Man, his life was gettin' sad. He used to at least be able to go get plastered or find a lap dance or shoot some people, or something. But no, now he was mostly sitting around bored and hoping nobody else he knew went MIA.

He flashed waved a lazy hand at the empty space beside him. "Can't say no to an offer like that."

Even if it seemed lacking in enthusiasm, Kagura's cheeks colored slightly when he agreed as an almost automatic response. She smiled softly and took up the other seat on the couch, folding her legs casually underneath her instead of sitting as stiffly as she had yesterday.

"I'm glad to see you're well," she started. It was a fairly normal greeting, but here it held more weight than at home. She never knew if she would wake up and find that someone she knew had been injured or worse.

Damn, she blushed easily. It almost made him feel as if he was doing something inappropriate or whatever, which was frankly pretty impressive all things considered. He had a really high threshold for what he considered "inappropriate."

Not as high as Rude's, though, contrary to popular belief. Rude was just sneakier about it.

Reno glanced over, turning himself around slightly so he could face her without getting his neck stuck at a weird angle.

"What, you mean like I don't look like a walking advertisement for a bandage-making company? What do you know, I'm glad, too," he agreed amiably. His lips curved into an easy grin that just bordered on a smirk. "You're looking good yourself."

Was he making some kind of joke or had she said something to offend him? For a moment it didn't quite occur to her that he might just be fooling around or making casual flirtatious conversation. At least, not until the way he phrased his last sentence.

He wasn't... really flirting was he? Maybe that was just the way they spoke in his world. She'd hate to make the assumption when he was just being nice and asking after her well being. Her cheeks grew a bit redder as she tried to find another topic for them to talk about.

"Ah- n-no, that's- u-um..." she started and failed. "W-well, did you have a good night then? I hope you didn't have too difficult a time of it. Our group was lucky, we didn't see any monsters at all."

Reno couldn't say if this was more or less...interesting, let's say, than bugging Elena until she turned bright red and pulled her weapon on him at the same time, but it was way less painful, so. Upshot? Maybe.

As long as he didn't make her cry. There was always that risk with these kinds of things. He was pretty sure he wouldn't, but you never really knew, and Reno was never gonna deny that he was a shameless dick, but hell, even Rufus would feel bad about making a girl cry.

...Okay, so maybe that was a bit generous. Whatever. Point stood.

"Nobody died, so I'd say it was a good night," he said. A part of him was a little curious to see what precise shade of red she'd turn if he got closer into her personal space, but that might just end up with him getting slapped. Chicks, man. Hard to tell.

"So who's in your little group, anyway?"

Might as well see if he happened to know any of them. Small world, after all. Or, small building in this case.

--Actually, the building was technically on the large side. Anyway. That really wasn't the point.

Going a night without someone dying was a bigger accomplishment than one might think. Kagura nodded as she listened, relieved that the man seemed to be well enough to make light of his situation.

"Ah- w-well, it's just myself and Bridget right now. O-oh, and Bridget's teddy bear. His name is Roger. We went to... to the Pharmacy on the second floor. Mm... sometimes I help Toshiro-kun or... w-well, anyone who asks. Oh yes, and-... ah... my cousin, Ritsu, showed up today too. So maybe it's not so small as I thought. Though... I'm not really affiliated with a specific group. What about you Reno-san?"

She tried to relax, though it was kind of embarrassing to be asked about herself and she had to hope it wasn't too dry and boring.
