Night 45: M-A Block Hallway

[from here]

Junpei found himself a spot not too far from the door leading out to the hallway. Seriously, if Yukari waned the damn Evoker, she needed to run her mini-skirted ass down here to get it since he wasn't going much farther. It was only fair since he'd trucked down to her block last night.

Setting the bag of stuff on the floor, he leaned against the wall after adjusting the Evoker in the waistband of his jeans. He was not happy with having lost the t-shirt he'd had last night, forced to wear the smiley one again, even if it was turned inside out. He sighed and looked down at the square bandage on his arm. Vampire. He'd been bitten by a vampire.

Just to make sure, the junior checked his teeth. No fangs. Good. He probably would have freaked out if he'd found any. Still... curiosity got the better of him and he peeled half the bandage off to look at the bite. Twin puncture wounds with some redness about them. He poked it.

"Ow." Poking it was not a good idea.

[Hey, Yuka-tan... got any garlic?]

Allen almost got turned the wrong direction in the hallway, but luckily, it wasn't too hard to figure out. He wondered if there was a map that he could get somewhere...

Addison walked out into the next hallway, shivering in the cool air. Or maybe it was just his nerves. He couldn't relax. Every movement was stiff and forced. He blamed his mind for it, which was assessing every detail, searching for something that disproved what he was seeing. He obsessed over the realism, and his lack of knowledge. He didn't even know where to begin looking for Sean. He had never listened to anyone's advice. He had never stopped to look at a map.

He found a wall to lean against while he tried to compose his thoughts. Taking deep breaths, he stared blankly at the floor. He was vulnerable like this. Something could attack him (no, there was nothing out there), and he imagined the monster as a bleeding, pale giant. Its long, pudgy arms reaching for him, and dragging behind it hundreds of poorly formed legs. It lurched and swayed as it moved towards him, but it didn't want to kill him. But of course, the hallway was empty of any such thing.

Addison pressed a hand over his mouth, but still made no expression.

In retrospect, whispered numbers while the 'patients' were all pushed around by nurses were not a great help in direction, considering the pretty much identical hallways around here. Pausing for a moment, and resisting the urge to reach into the coat pocket and play with the rubber band, Usopp thought it out. He'd seen the numbers were getting larger as he went down the hallway, so that meant the rooms at the end were the highest. Then it was only a glance with the light at the first room number on the edge of another hall off of this to see, if there was in fact an M60, it shouldn't be off of this hall.

Unless Simon really was crazy and had made the number up. Or Usopp was crazy for trusting the room numbering systems of someone he'd already decided was nuts. Then again, standing around in the hallway wasn't getting him anywhere either.

Abe held out a lingering hope that he'd meet Mr. Smith along the way. The man had at least some sense. Or Demyx, or perhaps that nice golem man. Someone. He always thought he'd be fine by himself until night actually fell and something dark crept under his skin. It made his soul feel cold, for lack of a better term.

The next hallway was slightly larger and connected to more rows of room halls. No sign of guards yet. There were more regular humans, all of them seemed to be teenagers. He didn't bother wondering why, there was only one door that led out and he motioned at it to Morgan.

It was when Rick got to the end of the hall, duffel bag slung over his shoulder and debating if he should stop and talk to the other patients that he paused. Did he even know where Matt's room was? He thought he remembered going there to salt it, like he was rigging up security or something, but it was hard to tell what was true and what he'd made up. In this case, he just hoped that at least some of it was right and M24 was the right room. If not, Rick guessed he could always ask around, but the least he could do was check it out first.

Suzaku was glad, once again, of the short trek to Lelouch's room. He'd already wasted enough time staring at the inexplicable manifestation of clothing in his closet. Really, he couldn't figure out what the purpose of that might be, unless it was a reward for good behavior or something.

. . . Geez, the least they could have done was give him his sword back. That suit wasn't helpful at all.

This seemed dementedly familiar. The hallways just dark enough to be creepy, the sounds of footsteps and muffled voices, occasional flickers of light in the rooms or around corners...it felt like the hallucinations he'd had when he was still going through withdrawal. It was probably just an immense coincidence that it was happening now and the staff was probably going to turn the lights back on and round them all up any minute. Really, he would have just stayed in his room if he wasn't curious about what was going on.

Still. Joshua, normally in the habit of standing up to guys twice his size, found himself occasionally checking the ceiling for spiders.

As Sephiroth moved, he made sure to keep an eye out for the monsters Rude had mentioned; 'low level', the man had said, but Rude was a Turk and so what was low level had to be adjusted accordingly. They would be equally low level to Sephiroth, of course, if not more so, but they could still possess the potential for a serious threat...especially while he was unarmed and had no materia or weapons to fall back on.

However, he saw no signs; just other patients, most seeming to have their own business to attend to. Nothing worth delaying his own mission for.

No familiar faces in this hallway. At least, none that he could see with his dying flashlight. He'd have to make sure he got somewhere fast enough. These wasted nights were getting old.

The Vulcan moved in quick, quiet strides, the muted noise of his boots against the floor being the only sound he made. Although he had been surprised to find his Starfleet uniform during dinner, Spock had seen no reason not to put it on. So long as he didn't attempt to wear it during the day, he doubted it would draw too much attention toward himself. Not only that, but the outfit was much more reliable and functional than the simple outfit and slippers their captors had originally given him.

It was certainly rather curious that they had decided to give it back to him at all, especially considering he didn't believe he'd done anything to warrant special treatment from the staff. Obviously, this was something he would need to question other patients about soon.

But for now Spock knew he needed to focus on the task at hand. After a quick glance around to make sure he was still in the clear, he quickened his pace and headed through the door.

Kratos walked briskly down the hall, using the walk to remember where he'd met the team last night and the exact route they'd taken to get to the basement. Would it be possible to cut through the Sun Room this time? They probably couldn't, since Hitsugaya hadn't adjusted the meeting place accordingly.

Rick closed the door softly behind him. Maybe Matt was digging in his heels, but it'd just take time, he guessed. Anyway, he really should take what little time he had to explore, try to get a feel for their options 'cause he still didn't know when the staff would come flooding back with the lights and enforce the curfew all over again.

It was dark out here. Really dark, almost like someone had just cut off the power. There wasn't a single emergency light or exit signs or anything. That wasn't exactly proper standards.

He remembered nightmares about this. He couldn't remember more than bits of pieces of the details, but he certainly remembered that they'd always started out this way. It was...

But no, that was coincidence. The power going out was hardly something uncommon and since when did nightmares ever take place in cheerfully lit settings, anyway? That would've defeated their whole purpose.

The hallway was all but empty, indicating that they were either they were very early or very late. Lunge wasn't taking any chances; he doubled his pace, hoping in the back of his mind that Laurier was made of sterner stuff than L had appeared to be made from.

And speaking of similarities, just how much did he remember? He let the silence carry them most of the way down the hall before glancing at the man, face a perfect painting of idle curiosity.

"Once we get out of the Institute," he asked conversationally, "do you remember which way we need to head?" In the woods to the East of the Institute came the answer given to him twenty four hours ago, but he wanted to hear it from Laurier. L's judgement he trusted (somewhat); Laurier's, he was less certain about.

The flashlight seemed dim to Roxas's eyes, as used to the pure, piercing light he could produce. It only illuminated a small circle of his path, and all of that was the same off-white as the corridors back in headquarters.

Or was it ex-headquarters? He didn't plan on going back but once, and that was to get rid of Xemnas.

Deciding that, if there were "monsters", the journal was safest in the room, the blond regretfully left it tucked under his mattress, away from prying eyes. It wasn't like they could lock the door behind them, after all. That journal was the only thing that he had claimed as his. It was a pretty new feeling for someone who was used to owning nothing.

Following the ascending room numbers seemed the safest (M23 was memorized, though he didn't know why he would ever return to his room tonight) path to leaving, and this train of logic didn't fail him. The darkened hall his room was shoved in opened up into another hallway, perpendicular from the one he had just left. There was a door to the left of him, but it was unmarked and open, with darkness sucking at him on the other side. To his right was another door nestled in the opposite wall - this one had writing on it, however, but distance faded the letters.

Roxas really wished he had a map.

It wasn't long before Remy reached the end of the hall that ran past the room where he'd woken up. When he did, there was a door on his immediate left, with another hall to his right; it seemed like there were more halls and rooms attached to it, with a door against the long solid wall.

It was dark, and what he could see of the halls... they weren't nice. Dilapidation didn't set off warning bells in itself (in fact, it felt like home), but he had a feeling that something wasn't right about this place.

He paused for a minute, his gaze moving between the two doors while he tried to decide which to go through; finally, he made the decision by choosing the one that was closer.

Howl strode out into the hallway with more purpose than he had found the last few nights. There was something about proper, well-fitting clothing that made one feel competent. For him, it was in the eyes of others. If they looked upon him appreciatively, he couldn't help but follow suit. It was natural.

And so, he continued.

The hallway was dark and mostly empty though there were definitely other, similarly dressed people wondering around. Cliff stopped soon after he'd turned the corner, shining the flashlight just ahead of himself. It would be easier to stop and ask someone what was going on. For once, he thought he might blend in enough to get away with it. (And anyway, he was pretty sure option #2 of wondering blindly until he got somewhere only really appealed to the leftover testosterone in his system.)

"Alright," He murmured. "Who's it gonna' be..?"
