Nightshift 44: Stairwell by Waiting Room/Lobby 2

[from here]

Another place where he couldn't see anybody. Which really just meant another place where somebody could be lurking in the shadows to ambush them with a steak knife, and they'd have no way to know it. Indy was really beginning to regret getting out early.

He sprinted up as fast as he could while holding a file drawer, hoping Ryuuzaki--and nothing else--would be able to keep pace.

Moving up the stairs toting the metal file drawer while the scrape on his calf bled down his leg was challenging, but putting distance between him and the man who had cut his leg to begin with was of much greater interest to L than stopping to ruminate on the pain.

The pain itself was irrelevant, anyway; unpleasant, but as long as he was able to move, and as long as moving didn't exacerbate the injury, it wouldn't do much more than ruin his mood.

He pounded up the stairs, with the occasional wince when his movements stretched the skin on his calf.

The lack of patient congestion meant that they had to be making good time, and Sanae was pretty optimistic about their chances of reaching the janitor's closet before it was completely cleaned out.

As he made his way up the first steps, he glanced back again for another spot of friendly ice-breaking. "So, Alvin, how long have you been here? Like what you've seen so far?" He laughed as if he'd just made a joke.

Tim was glad that the other two had accepted his presence so easily. He liked being around Bart just fine, but Bart wasn't the most capable person. Bruce was...difficult. He didn't know how he felt about them as a team, yet, and Batman wasn't exactly making that easier. The situation with Dick was...messy. He was still angry at Dick for thinking he was in denial about Bruce. Once they got out of here, he just had to prove it somehow, but for now...it put him in an uncomfortable situation.

It was easier, in a way, to work with people that knew nothing about him. He didn't have anything to live up to, any expectations to meet. He didn't have someone else's shoes to fill, either. He also wasn't going to compare them to how they should be, like he had with Bruce. Like he had with Kon. Like he still did with Bart. It was like coming back to the surface of a lake after being underwater for a long time. The undertow would kick in again, sure, but for now, he could just...breathe. He could just be. And it was all right, monsters and crazy people throwing light balls around or whatever else they encountered.

He held himself to a high enough standard. Escaping the ones that others held him to for a few hours was just fine.

"Three days," he said, in answer to Mr. Hanekoma's question. It wasn't very long, but it felt like forever. "To tell you the truth, I can't wait to get the hell out of here. But that's not something that's going to be done just by breaking and running. Anyway, I want to find out what's really going on. You could say I'm the cat that curiosity won't kill." He felt his mouth twitch. It was a little odd, wasn't it, how his sense of humor seemed to come so much more naturally around people that had no idea who he was or what he was like.

As Joshua followed along, he giggled softly at Mr. H.'s former comment. "We can always loop around and watch it from the relative safety of the balcony. Who knows, maybe we'll get an opportunity from there." But that was all he said for the moment.

After all, there was a question asked and answered, and Joshua found himself intrigued by the response. Granted, the phrase 'cat' made him cringe a bit, but he didn't pay any attention to that for now. Instead, as he moved past the other two, shining his flashlight up the stairs, he answered, "Not yet, anyway. Though I suppose I can't blame you for being curious... I want to find out the same thing, myself." But for a vastly different reason than the other boy, Joshua was sure.

((Then he leads them up the stairs, whoo!)) (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/734251.html?view=60736043#t60736043")

It didn't look like this stairwell had been used quite as much, at least not tonight. Terry hadn't missed how much quieter it had gotten with each step they took from the dorms, and that lack of noise only got creepier now that they were in a stairwell. Even the slightest sound echoed off the walls, making what turned out to be just other patients sound all the more ominous.

"We're almost there." Terry said it just to hear something else besides their footsteps and the thoughts in his head, both of which were getting too creepy for his liking. Once they made it to the top of the stairs, Terry risked using his flashlight again, just enough to make sure the area by the door was clear before they went on.

"Good," Kurt commented, both a little relieved that Terry had broken the silence and still nervous about being on the stairs. "Because believe it or not, running away from a monster while on stairs is not something I'd like to do in the near future."
