Nightshift 44: East Wing, Hall A (First Floor)

[From here.]

What was it again? Right. Stegman, which was even more unfortunate of a name than Dent. It was the second door down on the right, and Harvey hadn't forgotten that he had to force the door open. At least he didn't have Jason here to work at his nerves while he did it. Shaking his head, the man set his flashlight down on the floor and then wrapped both hands around the metal pipe. He'd intended for it to be used to bludgeon monsters, but its only job so far had been breaking down doors. Not nearly as exciting, but Harvey didn't need that kind of excitement in his life.

Knocking out the Batman, tying him up, and then torturing him before judging whether he should live or die? That what he needed.

He slammed the pipe into the lock a good three times before it caved, breaking apart and then allowing him to nudge the door fully open with his foot. He realized that the Bat might notice that on his way in, but hopefully Jason could handle whatever suspicion a broken lock might arouse.

Grabbing up his flashlight, Harvey moved inside.

Hime's next question was directed at Kagura.

"Any particular office we should check?" she asked, nodding towards the rows of doors. "I'm not familiar with any of the doctors, so it's all the same to me unless you think one of them may have something of use."

"I don't know any of the doctors either," Kagura confessed. The teen noticed that someone had already broken into two of the doctor's offices, which meant that any valuable items had likely been looted already. In that case, they should focus on the other eight offices where they might have better luck. "Maybe we should try one of the offices that's still locked."

After walking a few feet, Kagura came to a stop in front of Dr. Disraeli's door. "How about this one?"

Magic. Ok, so if it was broad, then he'd have it as "bending = magic" for future reference. No one he'd met yet had known what bending was, so having a standard way of explaining it was a good thing. "Guess I'll call it magic for everyone from now on then," Sokka said to Hime's words, "And you can bend the four elements. Earth, Water, Fire and Air. My sister, she's a waterbender, and I've got friends who can bend the other elements as well." Though if tey asked about Air... even if it wasn't so much a secret that Aang wasn't dead, and they weren't from his world, saying what he had was vague enough to deny the existence of an airbender later.

Sokka looked at the doors around them with a curious look. "I've never been to this part, so your guess is as good as mine?" he reasoned for the picking of a door.

So, magic based in the four basic elements? It made a certain amount of sense. Between that and the fact that the subject had come up because Sokka said it was something he couldn't do, it didn't seem like there was a lot of point in asking too much about it, other than idle curiosity.

"If neither of you know, I suppose that will do," she said, stepping up to the door Kagura had picked. Jiggling the handle experimentally, she noted it was locked... though it didn't seem to be anything special. Reversing the grip on her flashlight, she slammed the butt of it against the lock, expecting it to shatter. Instead all she got was some creaking and an aching hand. Still, it seemed fairly weak.

Eyes narrowing in determination, she quickly smashed the makeshift bludgeon against the lock again, then again. On the fourth time, it finally gave way. Feeling no satisfaction, Hime instead only had simmering discontent that it had taken that much effort to deal with such a menial task. Without a word or even a glance to her companions, she pushed the door open and headed inside.

They rounded the corner, and voila. Ten little offices in a row. Two of which had already been broken into, and right across from each other. Not very imaginative of whoever had swung by, but hey, that left plenty to loot, right?

Looting. Ugh. If he was in costume he'd be obligated to beat himself up.

"Anyone in particular you want to take a stab at?" Peter asked lightly, surveying the options. What kind of a name was Washu, anyway? "I've never even seen a doctor here."
