Nightshift 44: M51-M60 Hallway

Sai changed quickly. Whether he was less emotionally stable that usual or not, he was far better off than he'd been the night before. He would perform the mission required of him tonight. It was nothing that should put anyone's lives at stake, and holing himself up would only decrease his ability to perform his duties later.

The vial of sedative was secured safely in the sweatshirt he used as a makeshift belt. It was important that he got the item to Sakura tonight. They might not get an opportunity to get hold of a replacement if this one was lost.

M90 was in the men's block in the opposite hall. He should make haste so that his teammate wasn't delayed.

He seemed happy. Seemed being the operative word. He wasn't showing that he was upset, but Mori couldn't be so sure. Mitsukuni could be deceptively strong sometimes, especially when he really just wanted to cry and be a child again. Moving into the room, he sat down on his roommate's bed, waiting for his cousin to finish his dessert.

Mitsukuni ate quickly, but even after he finished, Mori didn't move to stand. His cousin needed a little more time, even if he didn't realize it himself. They'd lost friends today and he'd been in a fight at lunch. Even if talking to Sen had probably helped him some, he wasn't at his best yet and until he was, Mori wouldn't move. He nodded though, when Mitsukuni asked if he was ready, remaining on the bed. "Don't push yourself," he said after a brief pause, setting his staff down for the moment.

Takashi had a way of knowing exactly what he needed, even if Honey didn't always realize it himself. When his friend hesitated, Honey knew it was because of him. The blonde boy toddled over and climbed up onto the bed to sit next to Takashi, letting out a quiet sigh.

"We're gonna be okay, right?" he asked. It hurt to know that he hadn't been able to help his friends, but he wasn't going to give up on those that he could still try to help either. Despite all that, he tried to be brave. But sometimes it was really hard.

It broke his heart to hear Mitsukuni say that. To think that he had so many doubts, so much worry hidden away where Mori couldn't see. He should have been living a happy life, surrounded by friends and family and pretty girls fawning over him and taking care of him. Instead, he was here, where the entire world went dark, where they couldn't keep track of or protect people. He couldn't lie to Mitsukuni and say yes, but he couldn't say no and destroy his hope either.

Instead, he reached out and pulled his cousin closer, hugging him around the shoulders with one arm before leaning down and resting his forehead on the top of Mitsukuni's head. It was hard to comfort someone when there was so little comfort to be had, but Mori would try. Mitsukuni was the most important person in his life, and for him, he'd do anything. "We'll be okay," he said quietly. "I won't let this place hurt you."

It was probably selfish to ask Takashi for comfort, especially when he was probably upset too. But it felt good to be reassured, and Honey returned the hug, leaning into the larger boy's arms. They didn't get to see each other near as much anymore, not to mention the lack of cake and sweets and all the awful things that came out at night. But he knew too, that if Takashi was with him, he'd be okay, even if things were at their worst. '

"Mm," he nodded. Though they'd made up on the bulletin, he hoped his friend knew that how much he appreciated him. He rested his head on the other boy's shoulder. "I'll do my best too. I want to help everyone be happy again."

Mitsukuni leaned in and Mori closed his eyes. It'd been awhile since they'd last done something like this. When Mitsukuni was scared, the comfort he offered was different. When he was hurt, too, a different sort. Assuring his cousin that no monsters lurked in the closet or that his scraped knee would heal without scarring wasn't so difficult. Reassuring him that they'd survive a real house of horrors? Not so easy.

Mori sat still as Mitsukuni set his head on his shoulder and nodded slightly. It was hard to make people happy here, but if they kept trying, even making one person smile was enough, wasn't it? It was a start at least. And the place Mori would start would be with Mitsukuni. First order of business? The shuriken. "Tonight - metal?"

Despite his age and the maturity that should've come with it, he couldn't deny that at times, he needed someone to be strong for him. That'd always been Takashi. And even if things were falling apart all around them and even if he couldn't be around his best friend as much as he could before, it didn't change the fact that Takashi was here now.

He'd known since he was young that there was a time to be childish and a time to be serious, though he always preferred the former. And of course he knew that all children had to grow up one day. He'd just hoped it wouldn't have to come so soon. And not like this. Honey let out a slow sigh, giving himself a moment to enjoy his friend's comfort before he let go.

With much hesitation, he left Usa-chan behind, setting the rabbit on his pillow before he took up his other things again, ready this time. "Mm," he nodded, "there's lots in the kitchen, but the way there is usually dangerous. Is there anything closer?"

Mitsukuni sighed, and Mori felt the sound stab into him like a knife. He hated that Mitsukuni had to be so adult here. Despite his age, this time was the most important for him to act like a child. Up until they met Tamaki, Mitsukuni had always been the stoic one, pushing himself to be the scary captain of the karate club, to avoid cute things and sweets and everything he liked because it was expected of him. Mori regretted allowing him to do that for so long, letting him spend part of his real childhood attempting to be an adult. And now, when he'd finally been given a chance to be a kid again, this place was robbing him of it.

If Mori could, he would take away all the bad things here, but he couldn't. He couldn't even keep his roommates from disappearing or the nurses from separating him from his cousin. But he could still try. He kept close to Mitsukuni, even if he couldn't be with him, watching over him as he always had. He just wished it felt like it was enough, like before.

Mitsukuni stood and put Usa-chan down, causing Mori to frown slightly. He stood though and nodded, when Mitsukuni asked where to go, pointing to the hallway and then motioning down. The bathrooms had metal. They'd just have to pull the pipes from the wall. Mori had smelled the bad water before when people were finished doing that exact thing, and if that didn't work, there was always upstairs. He paused for a moment, then picked Usa-chan up, handing him to Mitsukuni. "He'll be sad if you leave him behind."

Even if it was awkward and impractical to carry the little stuffed rabbit around with them, when Takashi placed it back in his arms, he couldn't keep from smiling, though it was a sad sort of smile. He nodded, clinging to the only scrap of their old life he could actually hold in his hands.

For once it was Honey that was quiet, while Takashi had spoken. It didn't last long, of course, and Honey was pretty sure he'd understood what hadn't been said. Smile widening slightly, he pushed the door open.

"We'll all go together then."
