Day 44: Sun Room, Second Shift

[from here]

He really had beat the rush. Suzaku found a chair as close to the corner and as far from the bulletin as he could, and turned it to face the wall before curling up in it. His nurse frowned at him again, but she was still being cooperative, and frankly he didn't care what she had to say in the slightest. He didn't care even if he got sedated. All he cared about was finally having a few moments to himself, to sort out what Euphie's love meant and what the hell Lelouch's problem was.

It felt like he had all the pieces of a puzzle and was just too stupid to figure out how they fit together. What Lelouch had said about Shirley at breakfast and the tone he'd taken with Euphie on the board, Lelouch asking how Suzaku was, Lelouch dying. . . "All we can do is move forward and look out for the ones we care about." Euphie struggling to get out her last words, pain overtaking Suzaku's consciousness while he fought pathetically to carry out Lelouch's order. . . The last couple days, when he'd felt like he was finally figuring this out, seemed so far away now.

There were a couple things that were certain, at least: he hated what Lelouch had done, he always would. But he -- he didn't hate Lelouch, and he hadn't for a while now, and that wasn't going to change. And he didn't have much time, because everyone but Suzaku was terrifyingly mortal. And Lelouch was an idiot, but he still wasn't sure about the how and why of that one yet.

"I don't know." Dahlia sighed and smiled wistfully when he asked her that, whispering just as lowly as he did while she combed her fingers through her hair. Was he going to try and scare her? Ha! And here she thought he was smarter than to think he could do that, but there she went overestimating him again. Silly her. "It's awfully pretty."

And it was, but she was more interested in what it was worth. In money, in value... if she couldn't get the first, she could get the second. If he wanted it so badly, he'd have to show just how much he'd give for her little toy.

"Why?" She straightened herself, her usual bright and cheery smile not slipping for an instant. Somehow, though, it looked a bit more menacing. "Are you offering to buy it from me, Syncie?"

It was just like Dahlia (and women in general) to make things more complicated than it really was. After all, it was her fault she fell for his trap and followed him in the first place, and if it wasn't for him she'd probably be burnt to a crisp.

But whatever. Just as long as he got that shield then he was fine with playing her childish games. For now.

"Oh, I don't know," Sync responded, trying to look bashful while he spoke. "Do you have something in mind?"

"Me?" she whispered in a suddenly very offended and sad tone. How could Syncie think anything like that?! How could he be so mean?! "W-why would I? Are you saying I planned this? I could never try to blackmail you!"

Why was it so much fun to do this with someone who already knew how she was and couldn't do a damn thing to stop her? It was like being back in court all over again and skating those thin sheets of ice and lies as sweet little Terry took the bullets for her. Sync knew he had to play along. He knew she had the upper hand and he'd just have to either live with that or try to kill her.

He was smart enough than to try the second, though. He may have known she was a bad girl, but until he knew her MO, he had to be very careful around her.

Her pout went away and she put on her sunshine face. "All I want is your company. You're so strong... Not like me. Can't we just be friends?" Hopefully he was getting the hint because she hated spelling things out to people who should know better.

Fortunately for Dahlia, Sync merely assumed that she was speaking in some kind of code, though he found it pretty pointless considering that neither of them were speaking loudly.

'Is that it' was what Sync was originally going to say, but he'd rather not give Dahlia the chance to ask for anything else. Knowing her, she'd probably squeeze out as much as she possibly could.

"I can do that," the God-General responded happily, finally leaning back against the couch in order to get more comfortable. Now that the subject of the shield was settled, it was about time to move onto other things.

"Anyway, I have a favor to ask you..." In order for his plan to work he knew he had to reuse a few pieces. He could probably do it without Dahlia, but he'd rather take a few precautions.

"I'd really appreciate it if you came with me for one more night to the basement."

He wanted her to go down there again? To the deathtrap she barely survived? Couldn't he just take the damn shield and leave her alone? She guessed not. What a brat.

But if he was going to make her do another favor, she could do the same. He didn't expect her to be that easy, did he?

"Of course I will!" Anything for her best friend! "But, um... After that," if he was still alive, something Dahlia wished wouldn't be true and somehow couldn't shake the feeling that he'd make it out anyway. Damn cockroach. She brought her hand to her mouth and pouted again. "Can you take me to the chemical storage? It's not that important, but..."

Another request? At this point, however, he didn't care. Sync couldn't remember where the chemical storage was (if there was even one), but he could figure that out later.

"Sure, I can take you there! I mean it's only fair..." He nodded, though it wasn't long before his voice picked up its usual tone, even if it was still spoken in a hushed whisper.

"Anyway, just a heads up. I've managed to drag a few other people down there with us, but only because they think I have a hostage."

The God-General laughed, almost as if he was sharing a funny joke with the redhead.

"Just play your part and I'll make sure to pay you back in full."

By then the intercom had went off, signaling to him that their conversation was coming to a close. However, instead of standing up he remained seated to tell Dahlia one more piece of information.

"And one other thing: wait outside the F-Block tonight. I don't feel like wasting time."

Catching sight of his nurse walking up to him, Sync stood up from his seat and waved goodbye to the latter before walking off.
