Day 44: Sun Room, Second Shift

[from here]

He really had beat the rush. Suzaku found a chair as close to the corner and as far from the bulletin as he could, and turned it to face the wall before curling up in it. His nurse frowned at him again, but she was still being cooperative, and frankly he didn't care what she had to say in the slightest. He didn't care even if he got sedated. All he cared about was finally having a few moments to himself, to sort out what Euphie's love meant and what the hell Lelouch's problem was.

It felt like he had all the pieces of a puzzle and was just too stupid to figure out how they fit together. What Lelouch had said about Shirley at breakfast and the tone he'd taken with Euphie on the board, Lelouch asking how Suzaku was, Lelouch dying. . . "All we can do is move forward and look out for the ones we care about." Euphie struggling to get out her last words, pain overtaking Suzaku's consciousness while he fought pathetically to carry out Lelouch's order. . . The last couple days, when he'd felt like he was finally figuring this out, seemed so far away now.

There were a couple things that were certain, at least: he hated what Lelouch had done, he always would. But he -- he didn't hate Lelouch, and he hadn't for a while now, and that wasn't going to change. And he didn't have much time, because everyone but Suzaku was terrifyingly mortal. And Lelouch was an idiot, but he still wasn't sure about the how and why of that one yet.

"Much easier." The smile Matt returned might have been more of a leer if one caught it in the right light. If she was insinuating what he hoped she was insinuating... Well, he hadn't made any plans for that night yet, had he? He certainly wasn't going to now! His schedule was going to be 100% clean, and Homura could run after Lelouch to his heart's content.

...Though there was the issue of that zombie bite. Near the end of the previous night the cravings had started to fade somewhat. Hopefully this was a good sign and he'd be able to hold himself back tonight. He'd just wrap the wound up well so none of it showed through. A nurse might even be willing to cover most of the arm. "And yeah, we are. I also know of one stuffy lawyer who'll be vacating the room pretty early tonight, if you're interested in dropping by."

There really were other things that Ayumu should be doing tonight, especially since she had to make up for her personal failings the night previous. Reassuring Robin was really a lower priority than he would like to know about, especially since he wasn't currently expressing any doubts about her and her supposed feelings for him.

Still, though...there were always things that could interfere later, especially since he was suggesting his room. Given the way time worked in this place at night, she could reasonably never arrive before the end of the night. Or, well, given the last time it was entirely possible that it would be over quickly and she'd be able to take her leave after he fell asleep. (Poor boy.)

She just laughed softly and slid in a little closer, so that she was sitting with her leg pressed against his. "I just might be," she replied. "Mm, I'm not sure I remember your room number, though..."

Yes. That was the sort of reaction he needed right now. He had no clue how he'd been this lucky when it came to finding a woman around here, but man was he glad he had. That was the one great gift this place had bestowed upon him. "M59," he answered easily. And if Edgeworth hadn't actually left the room by the time she arrived, he'd kick him out himself.

And now he had to wait out the rest of the day for this. Dammit. He was going to go crazy. "You," he kept his voice low, moving in to plant a light kiss on her cheek, "are a magnificent woman."

"M59," she repeated, with a small nod, as though committing the number to memory. Best to meet at his room for a number of reasons; it would give her the opportunity to be somehow "delayed" should something else come up and would give her an excuse to leave her own room as quickly as possible. Anything that kept her away from Yuffie was welcome, especially after last night.

She blushed just a little at the kiss, with a quick, shy-seeming glance around to make sure nobody else had seen it. The staff fortunately seemed too interested in a minor scuffle between a pink-haired woman and a teenage boy, so they weren't looking their way, and the other patients seemed occupied enough (though she personally didn't really care about them - if they saw her cover would only be improved).

"I'm glad you have a night free," she replied, moving to rest her head against his shoulder. "So many things always seem to get in the way, here..." His assignments at night, for one. And then there was the night with the shambling undead...

Frankly, Matt didn't give a damn who saw Sen being affectionate with him. The patients were free to be jealous, and if the staff had something against romance they were free to burn in Hell. (Though they were free to do that anyway.)

"Well, we'll just have to make sure nothing does this time." Somehow. In all reality, he knew there wasn't much he could do against the Institute, and it was aggravating. Incredibly aggravating. One would think those in charge had better things to do with their time than keep him from scoring. Like torturing children.

He raised one arm slowly in order to wrap it around her shoulders. Just in case, just in case something happened that night, he was at least not going to give up the time he had now.

"Like what happened last night?" As though frightened just by the thought of that, Ayumu gave a light shudder and settled a little closer to him. "Those announcements on the...the intercom," she added, pronouncing the word as something entirely strange and unfamiliar.

So much here truly was unfamiliar, but staying close to Robin had proved useful in more ways than one. After their "tour" of the town the other day she at least understood some more about their surroundings (even if she still pretended to more ignorance than was true, of course).

"And I've heard that people died last night, too. It's all so...strange." And frightening, too, from the way she was clinging to him.
