Nightshift 43: Greenhouse Yard

[from here]

The greenhouse yard was the same as when he'd seen it on his first night -- quiet. Suzaku led the way over to the wall cautiously, still wary in case that thing appeared again. Unless it really was his overactive imagination. Or maybe he was finally going crazy, not like that was much of a surprise. Couldn't the crazy wait until he and Lelouch had finished what they needed to do, though? He didn't want his deteriorating mental state to result in anyone else getting hurt.

"Okay, who's going over first?" he asked Yuffie when they got near the wall. It was low enough for someone of his abilities, and he suspected Yuffie wouldn't find it a problem, either. But they had no idea what might be waiting on the other side.

Nothing? Yeah, right. Considering how the night was shaping up so far, Yuffie was pretty damn certain that it'd been something. She considered him, just for a moment, before following. "Whatever you say," she muttered.

The cold night air hit her like an invigorating brick wall, or maybe a needle-encrusted sledge hammer. It was a welcoming change from the stale air of the indoors, and she breathed deep. This… definitely wasn't the weather for shorts, but at least it'd be an incentive to keep moving. It'd be fine! Yeah. And she'd known from the off that it'd be chilly, so it was all part of the plan.

"I'll go," was her cheery reply. The wall wasn't very high at all; reaching the top would be a piece of cake, so long as nothing came dive bombing from above. She'd done it a few times before already, each time more confident than the last. "The fog gets so dense on the other side that scouting out the terrain can be difficult, but I can at least tell you if there's a giant bear sitting there with its mouth wide open."

A couple of steps backward gave her enough room for a little showing off run-up, and that (plus two cartwheels, a somersault, and a jumping flip with her body tucked in close) brought her easily to the top of the wall, crouching with both her shuriken and her flashlight miraculously still in hand. She squinted, aiming the beam of her flashlight into the thick drifts of fog. Nothing, nothing, nothing… Nothing. "C'mon up," she called softly, just loud enough for Suzaku to hear. "All clear from here. I'll go check from the bottom."

Silent as a shadow, she flipped over to the other side.
