Nightshift 43: Room of Earth

[From here.]

As expected, the moment Sync let the door shut a loud 'click' could be heard from the other side. Unsurprisingly, he hadn't bothered to try and wedge something in the crack; after all, there was no point when there was nothing more than a dead end behind them. Of course, a small part of him knew that he should've tried both doors just in case, but it was obviously too late.

Yet the God-General didn't have time to linger in his thoughts. Almost immediately a loud noise cut through the air, the ground beneath them vibrating as the roar persisted. Sync was about to take a step forward when a massive boulder suddenly rolled out of one of the several holes at the ends of the room. The rock only continued to roll, moving all the way back up into the steep slope and disappearing into the hole right across from the origin.

... Well now.

"Anise, put your stuff in Dahlia's bag. Dahlia, give your bag to me. Hurry." Even as he spoke he saw another boulder roll out of another one of the holes, this time only a few feet away from where they stood. Sync knew he had the best chance of getting through this 'obstacle course' with the added weight, and he could only hope that the other two understood that bout of common sense as well.

Of course, he wouldn't deny that he thought about leaving them behind, but then that'd just be too easy.

Dahlia found herself letting go of Sync the second she felt the ground beneath her shaking. An earthquake? Now, of all times? No... It was something different. Whatever it was, it had Sy-Sweetie stuck and staring at what was ahead of him. What was so-...

What. What. What the- No one said- What was this?!

Trembling hands did as Sync said, her eyes focused to the rolling boulders in the room as she pulled the bag off of herself and pushed it into Sync's arms. There were boulders here. Threatening to crush them if they moved forward which, with the locked door behind them, was looking like their only choice at the moment! Was she afraid? Not really; she was fast when she wanted to be. Would it be suspicious if she didn't act like she was? Very yes.

So her legs gave way underneath her and she stumbled backwards, pressing her back against the wall in order to keep herself upright, and she watched those rocks tumble across the room with tears in her eyes. Her breath came out labored and frightened, as if she were having a panic attack at the very thought of her imminent demise by being crushed flat. "W-we... we have- have to go through there?! I-I..." A poor, pathetic sob choked its way out of her throat, the rest of her shaking as it came out. "I can't. I can't!" She knew an imminent "slap to her face" was more likely than her death, but hey. A girl has to keep up her act if she wants to survive.

The click that followed their entry was expected this time, and Anise's only reaction to it was a small frown. Nowhere to go but forward, huh?

... Only "forward" was looking deadlier by the second. Boulders!? Anise hopped back as one rolled right in front of the group. One wrong step meant getting flattened, and going back wasn't an option. This was bad!

Anise shot Sync a suspicious look when he suggested she let him carry her belongings. Handing her weapon over to the enemy? She'd have to be nuts to do that! It didn't take long to realize that it was their best chance for survival, though. Sync had the best reflexes out of all of them. If anyone could get through with the extra weight, he could.

Damn it... Sync was the last person Anise wanted to rely on right now.

And Dahlia's panicking sure wasn't helping the situation any. It was kind of tiresome to listen to, but it was hard to blame her, since pretty much any normal girl would react that way. (Not that there was anything abnormal about Anise, not at all!) Still, if she got too worked up to focus, there was no way she'd make it across. "We don't have a choice, right? We'll make it just fine if we're careful," Anise assured her, trying to sound sympathetic.

That said, she returned her attention to Sync and the knife bag. Anise hesitated, then held out her flashlight and mallet for him. She hoped she wouldn't regret it.

Dahlia made another pitiful squeak of a noise as she quickly nodded her head. So Sync was going to drag her along? Good. That meant less work for her. Besides, if he failed and made a misstep, causing her death? She was taking him and Annie right along with her. Either way, she won.

She let herself be tugged along, going as fast as her feet could take her. There was a rush of wind behind her when that boulder passed and it was a good thing Sync was holding onto her arm because otherwise she would have collapsed forward in shock. Why did she agree to come along at night? Had Sync really known about all of this beforehand and didn't tell her?! This was bullshit.

She clung harder to his arm, trying not to cry out like a little girl and waiting for his next signal. The next room? Could not be worse than this. It just couldn't be.

Good. Sync could take care of Dahlia, and Anise could take care of her herself, so they could go ahead and...

Anise pulled back in surprise when Sync suddenly reached out and took her hand. It was bad enough that he had her tools in his hands, but now her life too?

Still, Sync probably didn't drag them all the way to the basement just so they could have a triple suicide together. Anise couldn't trust him, but she could at least trust that he planned on getting to the end of the room in one piece.

"Fine," she reluctantly whispered, gripping the hand in return and moving so they stood side by side. They didn't stand for long though, as the command and the tug soon came and Anise did as directed, matching the God-General's movement as best she could. She flinched as a boulder rolled behind them. There wasn't a single safe place in the room! Following Sync was her only choice, frustrating as it was.

Suddenly, Dahlia had new respect for Frogger. Jump forward. Jump back. Get on the log. Dodge the car. All at someone else's control, Sync yanking her chain back and forth like a very pretty puppet.

Tch. If it wasn't for her image, she would have charged through the remaining boulders and to the other side. Instead, she kept trying not to cry, letting out an horrified squeal with each leap of faith. Her arm shook inside of Sy's grip, and each time the now familiar sound of the earth shaking rumbled through the room, it left her trembling more. She mumbled to herself a little string of prayers, praying to god she wouldn't be killed. Please have pity on this poor soul! Please protect your little angels!

It was such a sad sight. If they chose to slap her in the face for it, it was just more testament to her acting abilities. She was starting to disgust HERSELF here.

Anise kept her eyes on the holes lining the room as they moved. She knew Sync wouldn't miss anything, but she still wasn't comfortable with blindly following him. It made her feel just a little better being aware of her surroundings.

The girl yelped when they suddenly changed direction and pulled back, just as one of the massive rocks rolled across their path. That was close! That was way too close!

Thankfully, Sync was just as quick as she expected, and they'd made it halfway without incident. The rest of the room should be a cinch! ...Assuming Dahlia's whimpering didn't ruin his focus. With Sync between them, and Anise needing to stay alert and ready to move, she couldn't exactly go around and shut her up, but damn, was it ever getting hard to listen to!
