Nightshift 43: M11-20 Hallway

Endrance was quiet as he gathered his things - flashlight, pipe, long chef's knife from the night before - and slipped out into the hallway. It felt a bit strange to be leaving without saying much to his roommate, but...what was there to say, really? He wasn't sure, and so saying nothing at all had probably been the best course of action.

As he closed the door behind him, he blinked. Had - had the walls just blinked for a moment? It reminded him of what had happened two nights ago, when the false-Kite had changed the entry room into Hulle Granz, and it put him on guard. Was he out again tonight, then?

There was no doubt. They were people moaning in pain and yelling in terror. It was a collective, unidentifiable background roar. It might have been relatively faint, but to Klavier, it might as well have been blaring. What was happening?! What was that?! What were they doing now?! He tried to stand again, only to become dizzy again and plop back down into his seat.

Damn! He was helpless. He was useless! There were people getting hurt and he was stuck in his room unable to do anything! What was going on outside of that room? If people were being killed or tortured why would they actually go through the trouble of broadcasting it?

Where was everyone? Why was he alone? Where was Kristoph? Was he okay? Was anyone okay?! God, stop it. Please. Just stop it! STOP IT!! MAKE IT STOP ALREADY!! WHY WAS IT STILL GOING?! AARRGHHH!!

He grabbed his head, firmly covering both ears with his hands and shook his head back and forth. But it was no good. Through a garbled, broken announcement, the screaming was even louder. He could still hear it!! He squeezed his eyes shut. STOP IT! STOP IT!! STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!

But it wasn't stopping. It was swelling, either in volume or in the amount of voices being added to it. After several minutes, it had grown unbearable. Still grabbing his head, Klavier screamed at the top of his lungs, adding himself to that horrible chorus.
