Nightshift 42: Activities Shed

[from here]

The shock on the door was enough to knock it open.

"Aaah!" Now that they'd broken through to the other side, Alkaid found herself tumbling shoulder-first into the darkness of the shed, and onto a big mesh bag of what felt like soccer balls. Or volley balls. She wasn't sure, but they'd finally gotten in, and that was a total score! One point for Spock and Alkaid! Zero points for stupid rotting zombie flesh.

She stood up quickly, regaining composure with a pump of her fist. "Perfect! We're in!" Then she flicked on her flashlight, trying to see what she could get a hold of. Surely soccer balls wouldn't deflect zombies, but if they could come across something harder like baseballs, or better yet - bats, it would be awesome. It was pretty unlikely that she'd find something like swords in here, which was dumb, but expected.

The former Demon Palace Emperor began to rummage hastily greedily amongst the sports equipment, hoping that the zombies didn't speed up or something ridiculous like that.

Spock hadn't expected the door to open so suddenly, but he managed to catch himself before falling onto any of the equipment. He glanced toward Alkaid, momentarily uncertain if she'd been injured somehow. But the Human wasted no time in picking herself -- and her enthusiasm -- up from where she'd landed.

Their entrance was hardly "perfect", but now wasn't the time to argue about semantics. The Vulcan quickly focused his attention on finding useful items. Upon closer inspection, it became obvious that the supplies in here mostly consisted of equipment used for athletic activities of Earth. This didn't contradict anything Spock had found in his own room, and yet he and Alkaid had already used the star formations to establish that this was, in fact, not Earth -- or, at least, the Earth they knew.

Of course, the fact corpses seemed to reanimate themselves was reason enough to suspect so.

"Fascinating," he murmured as he lifted a baseball bat constructed from aluminum. If they managed to get out of their current predicament concerning the institute's choice of security, he would have much to look into.

Spock turned to Alkaid. "We should make a retreat toward the building," he told her. "It would be wise to avoid direct confrontations with these beings if at all possible -- use force only for means of self-defense. Our primary goal is safely getting inside."

He had been curious to see what she intended to do with the net, but it didn't take long for Alkaid to switch it out for the bat. That was probably for the best. A net would prove easy to become entangled in while making their escape.

Spock's dark gaze flickered back toward the Human. "So long as the hallways inside the building are still relatively empty, our chances of survival increase if we leave the field," he said.

Alkaid's eagerness to engage these beings wasn't something the Vulcan approved of, and his mouth briefly pressed into a thin line. "As I stated earlier, we will only use force for self-defense." Having to repeat himself was rather inefficient, but he was willing to do it however many times it took for him to make his point.

Turning back to the small group that had started gathering outside the shed, he added: "Preferably only enough to drive them back without destroying them."

Spock certainly wasn't going to "come out swinging", especially if it launched them into a needlessly brutal conflict. Their demeanor was certainly hostile, true, but while the "zombies" of ancient Earth lore often feasted upon living flesh, Spock didn't want to use that as an excuse to jump to hasty conclusions. Seeing how he knew very little of what was out there, being so quick to try to destroy them would have been nothing short of irresponsible. If he'd had his tricorder with him, he would have at least been able to ascertain whether they were Human, or if they'd at least been Human at some point...

Unfortunately, however, he didn't have any such equipment, and standing here was only giving the creatures more time to increase their numbers. Eyebrows faintly furrowing, Spock gave Alkaid a single nod before heading back outside.
