Nightshift 42: Germaine Street

[from here]

The streets hardly seemed to be a better alternative to the pet shop. In fact, it seemed like there were more zombies on the street than where they were originally. Sakura glanced around the town in a frenzy. Zombies were everywhere! Where were they supposed to find somewhere safe?

She picked up a rock and pitched it at a zombie approaching them from behind. "Fai-san, where do we go?" she asked, looking up at him once more.

At the intersection between the street they were on and Germaine Street, Chise spotted a bright glow from behind the park. Countless bodies(that were still moving) littered the entire area. Small groups of people were running in and out of the buildings and--was that a horse? She stared at it in shock as it ran towards the inn.

"I think the buses are past that park," she pointed towards the glowing trees...which aren't suppose to glow. Normal trees don't glow yellow and fire-orange...and why do I smell something burning? "Do any of you smell something burnNIIIING!!" While directing her attention to the mysterious smell, Chise forgot to watch her footing and tripped over a broken arm into a puddle of zombie-goo limbs.

Ew...ew...ew..so grossSOGROSSSOGROSS! It was all over her clothes. She inwardly fought to keep the bile in her throat down. Suddenly, a whole hoard of moving limbs and torsos crowded in on her, grabbing onto whatever they can. A zombie with half of it's face crushed inward and a dangling eyeball rose on her left side. To her horror, it opened it's jaw, preparing to sink it's teeth into her virgin flesh.

She screamed.

Luffy smelled it too, whatever it was. Actually, it kind of reminded him of that night someone had set one of the buses on fire, right after their first trip to this place. As boring as Doyleton was in the day, things sure got exciting at night, that was for sure!

He didn't really have any problems with letting Kuro lead the way -- there was a lot to see from where he was following, after all -- which was why he was next to Chise when she suddenly fell over. To be honest, the pirate didn't get why she didn't lash back at them when she had a perfectly good frying pan, but maybe some people just didn't think of frying pans that way.

Well, Luffy sure appreciated a frying pan for what it did in the kitchen, but he also knew a good weapon when he saw one. And right now? A frying pan was the best thing to kick zombie ass with. Gritting his teeth, he lunged forward in an attempt to bring his pan down onto the monster that was about to bite Chise.

Kurogane couldn't have cared less what things smelled like in the place, unless it had to do with something that could hurt them. It was obvious that things were burning all around them, so there was no point in asking if they noticed! Especially if asking caused you to go head-over-heels into a pile of defeated undead.

"Watch where you're going!" he called, turning to look back. When he saw that Chise had ended up drawing the attention of the dismembered body parts though, he turned back completely to get to them. The boy was smart in taking the pan to the one closest to biting the girl, but she had one too, and why she wasn't using it and was screaming instead was beyond Kurogane.

He stepped right into the mess, squashing some random limb beneath his sneaker, and reached down to pick her up by the back of her shirt. After giving her a mild shake (she could complain later) to remove some of the pieces, he pulled half a hand from her arm and then drove the knife through the remaining half that had latched onto her leg. "I told you not to panic," he scolded, but did not put her back on the ground. Instead he quickly adjusted her to ave her sitting in the crook of her arm and then looked to Luffy. "We're running. Let's go," he ordered, thinking that having the girl with him would make picking up the pace easier. That was, if the boy could keep up himself.

A few milliseconds before Luffy's frying pan smashed into the biting creature, she stopped screaming. Everything she saw slowed down as her vision flickered in and out of focus. And then, there was nothing; her mind went blank.

Danger levels are high. Round flat object is inefficient for defense. High risk of death. Suitable choice: cannons. Must engage weapon mode--DISTURBANCE ERROR! ERROR! DANGER LEVELS DECREASING-

When her vision returned she found herself dangling from Kurogane's hand, free of undead limbs. I...didn't do anything, did I?! I hope they didn't see anything. Blacking out meant that she had no control over her body during that period of time, leaving it to do whatever it wanted(ie. kill everything in a 100ft radius).

"I'm sorry..." she apologized(and crying again). "It just happened so fast and--" was cut off when Kurogane lifted her into his arm. It was actually a good idea for him to do so, since Chise was very, very slow at running. Also, she was relatively small so her weight wouldn't be a problem. Still holding onto her pan in one hand, she hung onto Kurogane's shoulder when he began to run.

She didn't even notice the wings that popped out of her back when he held her, nor the smell of blood.
