Nightshift 42: Germaine Street

[from here]

The streets hardly seemed to be a better alternative to the pet shop. In fact, it seemed like there were more zombies on the street than where they were originally. Sakura glanced around the town in a frenzy. Zombies were everywhere! Where were they supposed to find somewhere safe?

She picked up a rock and pitched it at a zombie approaching them from behind. "Fai-san, where do we go?" she asked, looking up at him once more.

Keman didn't stop running until they were out of the park and onto one of the main streets in town. Not that it made them any safer, of course; there were almost as many zombies in the streets as there were in the parks. But he felt as if his lungs were about to burst, and he needed to get a few deep breaths before they decided their next move.

"So," he panted, hands on his knees, "I...think we can...safely rule out getting back to the buses...tonight."

Oh ancestors, Valyn was tired of running. He doubled over when they reached the street, sweating despite the chill of the night. Already he was unkempt and ragged looking, his hair escaping the neat tail he'd fastened it into that morning. His stomach hurt, and he didn't know if it was from fear or from exertion.

"We need....to find someplace safe." Where on earth would that be here? He knew the safe places in the institute, but in town? Were there even any safe places?

"Would it be safer out of town, in the woods?"

"Probably not," Keman admitted, getting his wind back a bit. "These...things aren't very fast, but it'd be easier for them to sneak up on us when they've got trees to hide behind."

And parked cars, apparently. One jumped out from behind a rather rusted old SVU, right at Keman. He kicked out at it, trying to its clutching hands and biting jaws, but it was too late. Even as he flailed, it started making more of that awful moaning noise, which seemed to attract more of the creatures.

"No time to talk! Come on!" The dragon grabbed his friend by the arm and took off.
