Nightshift 42: Germaine Street

[from here]

The streets hardly seemed to be a better alternative to the pet shop. In fact, it seemed like there were more zombies on the street than where they were originally. Sakura glanced around the town in a frenzy. Zombies were everywhere! Where were they supposed to find somewhere safe?

She picked up a rock and pitched it at a zombie approaching them from behind. "Fai-san, where do we go?" she asked, looking up at him once more.

Well, that would explain. It made a lot of sense if one planned on holing up in an upper-story room to hide from the undead horde. In fact, the only part that didn't make sense was where Sheena left such a safe room to come back down here and look for...

Oh. Well, now. Yukari almost felt a little guilty. Not quite, but almost.

The youkai was dubious about letting Sheena go, but did so anyway and moved behind her. She hovered closely, since it looked like the girl could barely stand.

A familiar explosion lit the night, blasting a hole in the mob of zombies. A few other undead had taken notice of it, but luckily were rather slow to react. Yukari, on the other hand, was quick to react when Sheena practically crumpled, catching her under her arms and awkwardly trying to avoid aggravating either the wound in her side or her shoulder.

"Come on, let's move," she said firmly, standing the ninja back up. It might have seemed cruel to keep pushing her so, but there was no way Yukari could help her if she fell unconscious. They needed to keep going, and so it was that she got them moving, as fast as they could stumble, across the street through the gap that was already starting to close with shambling corpses.

[lj ate my post, so this one sucks in comparison. Grr.]

Sheena couldn't help it - she creid out in pain when the youkai caught her. Yuukari had done the best she could, but with the way the ninja's shoulder felt like it was on fire, even a feather brushing against the area near the bite wound would have brought forth a vocal reaction that even a trained ninja would not be able to suppress. The spiking pain did do two important things, though; it cleared Sheena's mind and gave her a fresh rush of adrenaline.

"Faster...faster...faster...faster..." The ninja's words were spoken outloud, though meant for herself, as if they alone would urge her to run faster. They were almost across the street when Sheena stumbled, allowing a zombie to pull a little too close to them.

"Duck," Sheena told Yukari just before she snapped around with a roundhouse kick that sailed over the youkai's head and into the zombie's, sending it to the concrete with a crushed skull. It was the only non-card attack that Sheena had available to her that would kill a zombie in one strike. She just paid the price in pain as it ripped her side wound open more each time she used it.

It never once occurred to her to let Yukari defend them. She couldn't even begin to think about the youkai's power and how it could be used in this situation. She just wanted Yukari safe - by any means necessary.

Yukari's face was grim as she helped Sheena across the street. She really hoped that the room they were heading for was still secure and this wasn't just a waste of time; she really didn't know how much longer Sheena would last.

Especially if she kept trying to fight with those injuries.

"Stop that," she hissed as Sheena winced in pain after knocking away the zombie, standing up and holding the ninja steady. "Just worry about not passing out."

Admittedly, Yukari wasn't armed, nor could she kick a zombie in the head the way Sheena could, but she wasn't quite defenseless.

When a pair of zombies approached, one on each side, it was a simple matter for Yukari to open a gap on the ground before one of them. The zombie blindly stumbled into the new, interdimensional pothole, its foot falling right in. It didn't just disappear, though. A tear in the fabric of space time opened before the other zombie's head and the rotting foot came shooting out and slamming it in the face with enough force to send it toppling over. Neither were killing blows, but with both zombies floored, that was all they needed to keep moving.

"Just worry about yourself," she repeated as they continued across the street. Another wave of her hand, another gap, another zombie falling over awkwardly. She steered them around one of the flailing limbs, glancing about at the shambling masses that were closing in on them. "Just worry about keeping a move on."

"I can't just worry about me," Sheena replied, but she kept moving and let the youkai handle the zombies that came close. She kept an eye out, though, for any to get too close, ready to kick if needed. "I'm not wired that way."

Once on the other side of the street, the ninja grabbed a hold of a lamp post and started looking the building over in an attempt to get her bearings. She looked at the street, the pet place and then back to the hotel.

"The road didn't seem this wide when I jumped it," she muttered, leaning her head back against the post. "I think the room's around the back side."

Finally, they made it across. Giving another zombie the opportunity to kick itself in the face, Yukari watched warily as Sheena caught her breath.

"I know, but it seemed worth a try telling you," she said in a resigned voice. Sheena was the silly kind of hero that was going to get herself killed one day. Heroes had a tendency to do that.

"Well, then let's not stand around here," urged Yukari, adjusting her hold on the ninja and starting to move again. She didn't like the idea of entering the side alley next to the building, but it wasn't as if staying out here was much better. Hopefully there wasn't a mob of zombies waiting for them back there...

"Mkay..."

Sheena had to lean on Yukari a bit more than she'd had to before, making the trembling all the more noticeable. Sheena wasn't sure if she'd be able to deal with another large group of zombies without blowing them up.

As they entered the alley by the hotel, the ninja brought another card out. Just in case.
