Nightshift 42: North Street

[from here]

Being stuck in a small room with those monstrosities didn't seem the safest option. Being outside, with more space to see and move sounded far better. But when Klavier actually got outside, he suddenly thought maybe the small room didn't seem so bad.

THEY. WERE. EVERYWHERE. Crowded worse than LA during rush hour on even the worst of days. Rushing and moving like a writhing, anguished mass. So many. Where had they come from?! Stupid question. What were they?! Monsters, people... How could this-- AHHH!!!

He was frozen in place for a few moments before he realized staying in one spot wasn't the best idea. He frantically looked around. He needed to find somewhere safe! He needed to get out of here. Where was safe?! Somewhere high? Were all of the buildings infested? Maybe he could lock himself in somewhere and--

WAIT!! NO! What was he thinking?! What about everyone else? He couldn't just barricade himself somewhere safe and sit around while everyone else was ripped apart. And... KRISTOPH! Where was he?! Had he been swarmed, too?! He had to have been. But in this mess, he didn't even know where to begin looking for him. Or how long he would last searching. Maybe he would have to trust that his brother would find a safe place... No. He couldn't spend the entire night not even sure if he was safe or not. What if he needed help?

....Holy-- It looked like HE needed help!! "AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!"

Again he swung the lamp anytime any got too close, moving with his back toward the walls. Where to go?! Where to go?!

Ed spun around and flashed Adel a manic and somewhat violent grin. It was terrifying, these creatures coming after them, not knowing where his friends were and knowing that any of them could die from this, so the only thing to do was fight and fight and not give the bastards the satisfaction of going down. And that was something that Ed had become very good at.

"I'm fine," he said seriously. "Just need a moment and I can make a weapon." And a moment to recover from the alchemy but that went without saying. But with Adel there, if his friend could hold them off for a moment...

Heh... Edward was showing an expression he didn't always give out. There was a determination in those golden eyes, and a desperation in that smile. He was terrified, and yet he wasn't going to back down an inch. Edward wasn't the sort of person to go down easily- otherwise, he would never have survived as long as he had.

But Adelheid wasn't like that. In battle, especially like this, he was calm and collected, adopting a superior tone and posture, as though he was already confident of winning. That stance was the cornerstone to his style- and that deep confidence in himself was what had kept him alive for just as long.

The taller boy lashed out with whirling kicks, keeping the zombies at foot-length and making sure that they couldn't get surrounded. If they were overwhelmed, not his strength nor Ed's automail would save them. "Here and now?" He'd prefer getting to shelter, but if Ed wanted to make a weapon here, Adelheid would be happy for the assistance.

It was impressive to finally get to see Adel fight like this, not hedged in by the walls of the Institute corridors and against something which was more human shaped, rather than cats and insects. Ed moved towards him after he cleared one of the zombies out of his way, sending it stumbling away with a leg snapped from the force of his kick. They couldn't afford to be separated again.

"Yeah, here," he replied with a nod. "If I can make a weapon now, I can hold them off while you make something with an array." That would probably take longer and Ed would rather be armed in order to give Adel that chance.

All right... if Edward could make it, then that would offer a strong advantage to them. Adelheid nodded, then said, "Get ready. I don't know how long I can hold them off."

As soon as Edward said he was ready, Adelheid made his move. The zombies were clearly most vulnerable at the head... normally he wouldn't be able to do anything about that, but he wasn't a normal human. The young man spun around on his heel, lashing out in a perfect circular arc, his ki forming an energy blade in its wake. That blade neatly bisected the entire first row and drove the next few back... for a few seconds, Edward would be safe. After that, Adelheid would be in more danger than ever.

Edward nodded and as soon as Adel began to move he ducked, clapping his hands together and pressing them to the ground. Blue light flared and Edward gritted his teeth as the alchemy began to work, drawing viciously on his energy and leaving him gasping. It felt like minutes, but was probably only seconds, before he was able to pull the spear from the ground, fully formed and dragon crested, just like it had always been. He stumbled, black spots bursting behind his eyes for a few moments, and he could feel blood trickling from his nose.

But he was armed and after a moment he charged one of the zombies, aiming for its head and spearing it from neck to crown before ripping the spear out. The move made him feel dizzy, but he wouldn't allow himself to fall now.

Adelheid had never seen Edward use alchemy in quite that way before. The results were slightly terrifying, in a way; not just because he knew he couldn't replicate the technique, but also because of the terrible toll it took. There was some bit of internal knowledge that Edward had which Adelheid simply didn't; not even his family's technique for instant duplication could provide that information. Considering the damage that it had caused Edward, Adelheid wasn't sure he'd want to use such a technique.

For now, though, he fell back, limping on his now-hurt leg and calling out, "We should withdraw! Come on!" Not even a spear like that could hold off a zombie swarm forever...

It was weird how whole he felt from performing alchemy without an array after so long, especially when it injured him and when he knew where the knowledge to do so came from, but it did. He felt more like the Fullmetal Alchemist than he had in weeks and he just wished that he had his coat and other clothing with him to prove the fact. He nodded in response to Adel's cry and headed over to him, slashing at the creatures as they went. "I'm with you!" he called out, following quickly as they headed down the street.
