Dayshift 42: Tasty Burger - Afternoon

After lunch, Kanji had just decided to stay sitting at the table and slowly finish off his soda while he tried to think of something productive he could do while he had the chance here in town. ...Ah, who was he fooling? He had no clue what the hell to do. His senpai probably had a list of things they could all be doing while in town. Investigating stuff or mapping the landscape or gathering information from the townspeople or... something like that. But Kanji had no clue how to go about any of those things. He had the observational skills of a rock and him walking around trying to talk to everyone wouldn't end well.

But even he knew he couldn't just sit here, slurping on his soda all day. He just needed to think of something. Yeah. Something.

....

He drank some more.

Kaoru looked out the big glass windows (wasn't glass really expensive? It seemed like such a waste to be that big), and nodded. "I kind of like it, but, it is a little weird, yes." Sometimes, she really liked winter, especially when she didn't have to actually feel the cold.

Under the table, her feet kept bumping his. "What do you want to do next?" she asked and took a small, curious bite of her burger.

Kenshin shook his head. "Not a clue," he answered blithely. "Do you want to look around more of the shops? Ah..." The rurouni looked up and frowned, uncertain. "Kaoru-dono...has a little sauce on her face." He motioned to the corner of his mouth. "Here." It was rather funny, actually. She was sitting in front of him, looking very fuzzy and pink wearing the Western-style clothes the nurses had forced her into this morning, and she had a glob of orange sauce on her cheek. It wasn't exactly how he was used to seeing her.

"It's right above the corner of your mouth, sort of on the cheek."

"What?" Kaoru's eyes widened in embarrassed horror, and she reached up with a napkin to wipe the offending glob off her cheek. She hadn't gotten food all over her face since she was a kid. "Did I get it?" she asked, and hoped no one else had seen what a mess the 'burger' had made.

Instead of wiping up the sauce, all Kaoru had managed to do was smear it around.

Kenshin tried not to laugh, but he couldn't help it. He coughed hoping that would cover most of it up, but his smile was something of a dead give-away. Oh well. "Not all of it, no. Here." He sucked on the edge of his napkin and then leaned towards her.

"May this one?"

Kaoru crossed her arms, "Well, fine. Just, be quick about it." This was embarrassing, and her face felt hot. Her ears burned and her heart thudded loudly.

It was stupid, since she'd been close to him before, but it felt a little weirder and different. Intimate, maybe, was the word she was looking for. "Er, thank you, Kenshin."

"All right, this one promises to be quick." Using all of the speed that had made his swordsmanship legendary, Kenshin deftly wiped the sauce off Kaoru's face in mere seconds.

"There, better." He beamed at her as if nothing had happened. "You're very welcome, Kaoru-dono."

And in a flash, it was gone. Kaoru gave him a tiny, relieved smile and pushed her food away, more willing to concentrate on the much-less-messy fried sticks of potato (not that they tasted like any kind of potato she'd ever had).

"We... could look around at the shops, if you didn't mind. Everything is so interesting and quaint here. I'd like to look around a little more, Kenshin."
