Dayshift 42: Morning - Magus Park

Senna stepped off the bus to wind blowing through the clothes she was given. A sad face at one of the nurses allowed her a long red scarf as well, and once she had draped it around her neck and let it hang down her back, she had trotted off.

The park she had saw last time seemed a good place to be on the look-out for the chicks from last night. It was close to the buses, and a big enough place that if they remembered that they had a race date, it would suit its purpose. The girl ran to a place in the middle of the field and waited there, shifting her weight from side to side. After a while, this wasn't enough, and Senna traded back and forth between jogging in place and acrobatics--the easy flips and cartwheels keeping her warm.

Her mind had changed in the night before. She had gotten a taste of what leadership entailed, and she wasn't sure she had rose to the occasion or not. She knew she had tried her best, and had been willing to give as much as she had, but it hadn't been enough. She knew this. Hokuto, at least, had gotten hurt, and in the end, they still hadn't explored more than the schoolhouse. They really needed a different approach with that place.

She went back and forth internally, body going through the motions and reflexes of her movements.

[for... Falis, Hokuto, Meche, and Soma?--and down to here]

"Yeah, I am." Suzaku smiled at the kid before easily swinging up to his perch and taking a seat on the proffered bar. He looked out across the park for a moment, registering that it really was quite pretty, even with the cold weather. Such a difference from the austere Institute, and Suzaku couldn't help wondering if the town also became creepy as all hell at night. But there were people living here, weren't there? They couldn't all be in on what was going on, so maybe the town was safe. It might be possible to get here at night if he moved at top speed. . . He'd have to take a look around, because there was no point in trying something like that if there wasn't anything to get out of it. For now, however, he'd sit on this cold bar and talk to -- hmm.

"I'm Suzaku," he said to the boy next to him. "Have you been to the town before?" No use in trying to find out everything for himself if he could just ask someone, after all. Suzaku normally didn't think to ask for assistance before he did anything, but things involving information were different. He might as well take advantage of what resources he could get, not that he ever wanted to think of this boy as a resource.

The guy had to be pretty athletic to be able to swing up like that. Though it shouldn't have been a surprise; they were all yanked out of some crazy sci-fi adventure story. There wasn't much of a point in having a hero who sat on his butt all the time.

The name wasn't familiar either, much to Peter's relief. If he ever ran into someone he recognized again, he wouldn't know what to do. He was already on Indiana Jones' hit list, and he wasn't so sure that he could stay off anyone else's, either.

"Peter," he said once the guy was settled. "Nah, I haven't. I've only been here for a couple days."

He faltered, suddenly at a loss for what to say. Nice weather? See any monsters last night? How about them coupons, huh? A little embarrassed, he began to fumble with the brown paper bag balanced on the bar beside him in what was hopefully a decent cover for the silence. A quick grope inside produced a cup of yogurt and a plastic spoon, and his stomach lurched painfully at the sight.

Peter really, really needed to eat.

It tasted cheap, and maybe just this side of sour, but all he could feel was the simultaneously blissful and revolting feeling of food in his stomach. It was sickening, but he knew he had to keep going. Starving himself for Harry was a stupid idea, and there was no doubt the older boy would be kicking him being such an idiot.

He paced himself, not wanting to look like a complete freak in front of Suzaku. After a few spoonfuls he spoke again, deciding to keep playing it safe for the time being. "So are you just taking a break too? Most people are trying to scope out the town for supplies."

"Nice to meet you, Peter." Suzaku was trying to be as polite and friendly as he could. He hadn't had much practice with that in the last year, mainly because he hadn't needed to be polite to be Schneizel's weapon, so it took a little more work now that it might once have. This was a different kind of mission, one that required relating to people, both for the purpose of organizing the patients and because -- because he wanted to help everyone get out of here. There were children here, for God's sake.

But it was getting a bit easier to smile at strangers, set slightly more at ease by Lelouch as he was. He could rest a little easier now that he knew he was following the right person (for once). Even with the drawback of his subsequent confusion making him want to withdraw more. He could definitely manage to talk to some stranger on a jungle gym, however.

"I just got here a few days ago, too. I'm going to check out the town, but -- yeah, seems like I am taking a break." He hesitated, watching some of the other patients enjoy their small bit of freedom. "So, what kind of world are you from?" It was a question he'd been asking a lot of people, but it was something that genuinely interested him. And it was a good place to start, in order to get to know someone and see what kind of person they were, what kind of skills they might have.

"Likewise."

It sounded like the guy arrived around the same time he did. It was weird how they just picked them up in huge droves like -

"Mmn?!"

The question caught him with the spoon was still wholly in his mouth, staring at Suzaku in utter shock.

How the hell was he supposed to answer that without giving himself away? Oh, there's some people who shoot laser beams from their eyeballs and set themselves on fire. Who, me? Never. I just enjoy a good pair of spandex footsies. One mention of powers - or anything unusual at all - and the jig was up. If he hadn't already screwed himself over by freezing like a pigeon on a freeway. Frick, he was so bad at this. Why couldn't people just assume he was a hopeless pansy like back home?

...He was probably the only living human who wanted that.

The spoon clicked against his teeth as he drew it out. "What, you mean like...what planet am I from?" he asked slowly. Suzaku was so going to think he was running on three brain cells after this. "What year, or...?"

[identity profile] superdynamic.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Suzaku blinked at Peter in surprise. Why would such a simple question cause a reaction like that? He didn't have to tell Suzaku anything he didn't want to. Or maybe he didn't know about the different worlds, in which case most people would be a bit surprised to get that question.

"I guess." Suzaku shrugged and started swinging his legs a little. "I've met people from completely different timelines and countries I've never heard of, even people who aren't human in their own world. . . I'm from Earth myself, from Area 11 -- uh, what used to be Japan." He wasn't sure what name to use; most of the Japanese people he'd met didn't seem to be from a world in which Britannia had taken over their country. Not to mention that even Soma, who'd been from a world remarkably similar to his, still called it Japan. "It was renamed when it became one of the Britannian Empire's conquered territories." Which was the most emotionless way he could put it, because he didn't want his emotions to get tangled up with what should just be a simple conversation. "What about you?"

[personal profile] tightsofmight 2009-07-01 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh. Oh, geez, sorry! I'm just kinda -" Peter waved his hand in the gesture commonly known as 'I'm a total flake, please ignore my frequent spasms', "I've been out of it for a while. The last couple of days were pretty crazy."

There. Problem solved. He was a dork and nothing more.

The uneasy smile began to slide as he listened to Suzaku. Area 11, 'conquered territories' - sounded like a dismal look into the future. "Sorry to hear that," Peter said softly. "When did this empire take over? I've never even heard of it before." Were they British? It sounded British, but then why not just call it the British Empire, like they used to way back when? Either way, if it just happened recently, then Suzaku probably didn't want to talk about it.

"I'm from America. New York City in 2003." The more ordinary he made his world, the more ordinary Peter Parker was. Just keep it simple. He dug into his bag once more, producing an orange and set to peel it clumsily. This was the only time he ever regretted keeping his nails short. "No big wars yet, but people are getting antsy. My roommate though, he's from the thirty first century. Apparently he's a big time hero back home."

[identity profile] superdynamic.livejournal.com 2009-07-02 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't worry about it, it's no problem." Suzaku gave Peter an easy smile, wondering why the guy was so flustered. It wasn't like he'd done anything spectacularly stupid -- not by Suzaku's standards, at least. Maybe he was just a little self-conscious? Suzaku would have to be extra-friendly, then. "Everyone's life is a little crazy around here, isn't it?" Though, really, on the list of awful things that had happened in Suzaku's life, his stay at Landel's Institute was pretty far down.

He probably shouldn't be surprised that Peter had never heard of Britannia. After all, not many other people had, despite it being the world's largest superpower. It was a little disorienting, albeit in a good way. "2003? I suppose you're technically a lot older than me. I'm from 2018. Britannia took over Japan in 2010, but you would have heard of it before that. It's been around for thousands of years. I guess it's another one of those cases of alternate timelines."

He paused again. It most definitely was an alternate timeline, come to think of it, because Peter lived in Britannia. Hearing it called America was yet another strange new experience he could get used to. "Actually, in my world, America is Britannia now. The Empire relocated to the colonies after they lost to Napoleon."

[personal profile] tightsofmight 2009-07-02 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I guess so," he agreed quietly. Peter knew that everyone was having a hard time here, but it wasn't like...fantastic, now it was back again. The littlest things were setting him off today, and now the half-eaten orange in his hand looked about as appetizing as roadkill. He forced another piece into his mouth regardless, wincing as he swallowed.

Watching the people in the park wasn't helping either. Just reminded him of when they were kids, playing tag or climbing trees. Harry always beat him at everything, but made sure to share when the ice cream truck rolled around to make up for it.

Peter ducked even further into the enormous hoodie. Conversation. Right. That had been working so far.

"Probably. I'd be...what, thirty?" he shook his head. "The time differences here are weird. A lot of my friends here either think I'm supposed to be older, or they don't remember me at all."

The mention of Napoleon snagged his attention. History wasn't his absolute favourite subject, but he wasn't getting honours for nothing. "Seriously? So then he didn't lose at Leipzig? Or did the army not mutiny on him or something? What about the World Wars? Hitler and all that - did they still happen?"

[identity profile] superdynamic.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Suzaku frowned a bit at Peter. The boy seemed kind of -- sad? Suzaku wasn't sure, and he didn't want to jump to conclusions, especially because most people had a reason to be miserable here. Still, he didn't like seeing anyone else with that look in their eyes, the look he saw in the mirror so often. (When he could bear to look in the mirror.) So many times he had wished he could help everyone, but it was an impossibility, even he could recognize that. Just one more thing to regret.

"Ah. . . yeah. Someone I know from home came here from an earlier time than me. I suppose if it were early enough, someone might not recognize someone they knew at a later time. . ." He and Lelouch would have to be younger than ten for that to be the case, however. God, how could he know someone for so long and yet feel like he didn't know them at all?

Suzaku shook his head, bringing himself back to focus on the conversation. "Leipzig? I don't know, I don't remember hearing about that battle -- he won at Trafalgar, I think?" He really should know Britannian military history at the very least, being one of said military's top officers, but they probably just didn't like talking about their defeats very much. Speaking of which, World Wars? That sounded completely horrific. Weren't things bad enough already? "And no, I don't think so. There have been a lot of wars, some of them pretty big, but I don't know who you're talking about, so it might not be the same thing."

[personal profile] tightsofmight 2009-07-05 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Really? So they were just younger?" Peter asked. "Some of the people I know look different too. My friend -"

This was a bad topic to be on. A really, really bad one.

"- Kurt, he's younger but his face is kinda off too, you know? Like his nose is smaller. And Tony's shorter than he used to be. Neither of them remember meeting me at all. They have the same sort of memories, but not everything...not everything happened the same way, so it's kind of..." He trailed off. That was probably because there was more than one story about them. Like with books and the movies based on books - they were never identical. So was Harry the original Harry? Or did Peter come first? Harry seemed like he was from around the same time as he was, but he was older, so he had to have come before him. Unless they just made them all older the second time around for some reason.

He'd gone quiet again, hadn't he? Peter quirked a hasty smile at Suzaku in apology. "It's freaky to think that there might be another you walking around."

Technically there was, even before he got to Landel's. But Jessica and the others were clones and not from some alternate reality, so that was different. Somehow.

"Ha - geez. I want to say that you're lucky you missed them, but any war is a bad war. For all I know, you had it worse than we did." Peter shook his head. This wasn't exactly uplifting conversation either. What a little ray of sunshine he was.

"So what did you do back home? You're done with school and all that, right?" Suzaku seemed to switch between acting older and younger than he really was. He was polite, unusually so for a teenager (if he was a teenager), but then he went and started swinging his legs like he was ten years old again. His vocabulary flipped back and forth too. Made it hard to pin down an age on the guy.

[sorry I died; do you want to keep threading?]

"Really? You mean there are. . . different yous? Different versions of the people you know?" Suzaku stared at Peter, realization dawning. Was it really possible that there might be other realities where a different version of him existed? What if he could have lived his life with just a few things changed, what if some things could have been prevented? And what if -- what if Lelouch was actually from another dimension, too? Maybe there was enough similarity that they'd thought they were from the same universe, but things were slightly different. In which case everything Suzaku had told him might be wrong. He might not have to make the sacrifices he thought he did when they got back. This could lead to the most needless tragedy, and all because Suzaku hadn't thought far enough -- he had to tell Lelouch as soon as possible.

Suzaku welcomed the change of subject, however. He didn't want to talk about war, either. He might not want to imagine a war that was even worse, but the ones he'd lived through were terrible enough, especially when he thought that if he'd just lived in some alternate reality, things could have been different. Not that it would be possible to avoid the subject, probably. If they were talking about Suzaku's life, that is, because it mostly consisted of violence and little else.

"Well, actually, I only went to school for a little while, thanks to -- to a benefactor." Was it at all possible to avoid painful things? Suzaku suddenly remembered that he had never fulfilled Euphie's last wishes. What would she think, if she could see him now and know that he spent his time crushing armies instead of finishing his schooling? "I've been in the military for years, so that doesn't leave much room for things like that."
