Night 41: West Wing, North Hall 1-A

[From here]

For the first time all day, von Karma was now in an area that was somewhat familiar to him. The last day that he had had full consciousness, he had passed through this hallway on his way to the recreational field. Oddly enough, although there had been a number of patients meandering through this hall last time, it appeared that he was the first one here tonight. Gingerly, he walked close to the wall in case something non-human emerged, until he reached the doorway to the north.

Carefully, he opened the door and looked outside. The grassy field lay before him. A cool breeze drifted in; this was actually the first breath of fresh air that he had received all day, despite his blasted nurse's nagging. Steeling himself for the trip to the activities shed on the far end of the field, he stepped outside.

It must still be early yet, Edgeworth thought as he moved down the hallway. It was unusual to see this particular stretch of hallway so vacant, and that made him uneasy. The voice responded in kind, rumbling a low warning as he moved from this hallway and to the next.

...But there was no shadow here, of course. Thankfully. What would that mean, if they ran into shadows in this place that wasn't the TV world? Just another mystery to solve, right?

Jiraiya had mentioned monsters.

Still no sign of activity. Hitsugaya wasn't bothered by the silence, but he did wonder what the other patients were up to.

He turned and exited through the door into the long hallway that led outdoors, turning automatically toward the south. He hadn't seen many people yet, though for a moment he thought he recognized Hitsugaya. Armand decided his eyes must be playing tricks on him, because Hitsugaya was dead.

He pushed on through the door.

There was something disconcertingly regular about the build of the place that didn't sit right with Kibitoshin. It was all too square, too normal. Even Kami's lookout, with its winding staircases that went nowhere and its curious endless rooms, would have been preferable to this; back there he could trust it to be odd, but here he felt like something was always about to be pulled from under him. Shaking his head as if to dislodge whatever thoughts might have settled there, he pressed on.

How strange to think that in all the time Grell had been at this Institute, he hadn't really gotten very far. He tended to stick to the patient rooms, where his victims were, but now that his revenge was over, he'd all but lost interest in Brainiac 5 and his games. Right now, he had a much more pressing engagement, one to Wally and to that man 'Tim.' Tim couldn't be his real name. No one that caustic ever had a name so simple.

Moving down the hall, he headed off to where he was meant to meet Wally - far from his rooms where things could never get back to him.

The hallway seemed to be empty so far, which was a little strange. Claude wasn't sure whether it was because everyone had already passed through, or if it was just too early for people to be hanging around yet. He hoped it was the latter since they had a lot to do tonight.

But there was no reason why they couldn't chat while they were walking. Claude had some things he wanted to ask about anyway, and he doubted he'd get the chance once they met up with Dias and that friend of his.

"Did you manage to find out more about that sword?" he asked. The blond didn't want to sound impatient or nagging, but he was curious and maybe a little eager. Even though Ashton's sword was better than no sword, Claude knew it wasn't necessarily well-suited for Guy's needs. The sooner he got something else, the better off he'd be.

Guy wasn't quite as concerned about the emptiness of the halls. He knew that they had gotten out quickly, so the only thing they had to worry about was whether or not Dias and his friend would be on time. Then again, Guy didn't think the blue-haired swordsman was the type of person to keep people waiting. As for the healer, who knew?

In Guy's experience, most healers were pretty prompt because they knew that their lateness could be what decided if someone lived or died. This situation obviously wasn't so dire, but the point still stood.

Claude's question was expected, and Guy didn't really feel any pressure from it. "Oh, yeah, sort of. Okita didn't have all the details but he said he would look into it for me. I explained the situation to him so I should have an answer soon enough," he said with a shrug. Either way, it looked like he would be spending a few more nights with Ashton's sword. If he had managed up to this point, though, then he should be able to hold out for longer.

Guy led them further down the hallway.

The hallways seemed pretty empty so far, which Sora thought was pretty strange. Hadn't they just gotten a whole bunch of new patients? The boy hadn't spoken to any of them himself, but he'd definitely seen a lot of faces he didn't recognize wandering around during the day.

Maybe most people had learned that the recreational field was a dangerous place to go at night. Then again, what place wasn't dangerous?

Sora was just glad that the trip was fairly short. If he got there before Allen, he would also be able to rest a little before getting ready for the long haul; over the wall and across uneven ground toward the quarry.

Once he reached the end of the hall, he opened the door and headed outside.

This hallways was sparsely less populated than the other one, but Ciel saw no difference in the layout. There was enough lighting that he could check who was there before turning the corner. His heart beat picked up with each new step, wondering where the creatures that had been described were kept hidden. Would he have to delve further into the institution before he encountered them? Perhaps he wouldn't be in too much danger if he stuck to his short and direct path.

The good thing was that he wasn't entirely alone. Other patients continued to surround him. He could use them to gauge what would be in the next room, listening intently for any screams or signs of battle.

With a quick glance over his shoulder to make sure he wasn't being followed, he entered the next hallway.

The response provoked movement, made the boy stumble forward for yet unknown reasons. Nigredo's waveform kept moving away, and that... Wasn't acceptable at the moment. Albedo could contact Nigredo. Albedo was connected to him.

Left hand still wrapped around himself, Albedo right hand rose to cover his eye as he moved further down the hall. 'What is it?' wasn't something he could answer. Not yet. Not so far in their apparent closeness.

Albedo wasn't yet to a point where he completely lost himself--the boy knew fully what had and hadn't happened in the past--but at the current moment, Albedo knew loss and heartbreak, and something so much deeper. Nigredo was... Something familiar.

...Something.

The link remained open between them, though nothing was said. Unless the reoccurring theme of loss and pain that Albedo was openly sending without realizing counted as a response.

Allen waited until Sora was through the door, then shut it behind both of them. It would be a bother to go around another way, but neither of them were likely in any shape to be going up against something like that. It was for the best, in the long run. He just wished there was a way to warn people against going out this way.

"Sorry," he sighed, leaning back against the door.

At least they were able to get away without suffering any sort of damage. Sora let out a relieved sigh when Allen got the door closed. He didn't think many patients here would be able to handle something like that. A car? It was downright unfair!

While Sora was a little annoyed that they had to make a detour, it was hardly Allen's fault. He shook his head at the other boy. "No need to apologize. We just need to hurry to another spot. I'm thinking the greenhouse will be best."

After all, getting to the courtyard required going through the Sun Room, and that never ended well. The last time they had gone out by the greenhouse it had been relatively quiet.

"Anyway, we should go," he said, and without further delay he led them back down the hall.

Another empty hallway. It made Harvey wonder where most patients rushed off to, but the maps had given him a sense of how large the building was and the bulletin posts had hinted that there was a way to get outside on top of it. He didn't know how promising that would be if there was still no news of someone actually escaping, but it was good to know nonetheless.

He only hoped that this janitor's closet wasn't a popular place to go, since he might throw a fit if he got there and everything had already been taken. That thought got him to pick up the pace as he moved down the hallway.

Empty. When the hallway had opened into a larger one, Megatron had quickly reached into his clothing and drew out his… pen. In the low gaze of the torch, he flipped the cap off, and eyed the nib.

How terrifying deadly.

Still, it was better than nothing, and Megatron had always been quite the opportunist. Flashlight held in one hand, pen in the other, he quickly crossed the floor to an adjacent door. It was harder to tell in the dark, but he was positive he was following the route his nurse had followed when she had brought him back in the first place.

It was too quiet, too deserted – it was the silence that inevitably came before a deafening roar.

The hallway was fairly quiet, as usual. Obi-Wan supposed many of the patients had already headed off on their respective missions. With so many people working at so many different things, it was a bit disheartening to think that none of them had made any significant progress. Even the basement had turned out to be less than helpful, although there was still that extra door he needed to investigate.

He wasn't about to do that anytime soon, though. These days he was bound to lose something important every time he headed down there. It was best for him to prepare himself more for a mission like that. Once he felt adequately prepared, both in mind and body, he would consider going there again.

But for now he needed to think of the patients who needed rescuing tonight. The other team members were likely waiting on him.

Momo left Artemis and Haku, now having completed the few things she needed to do. Now she had nothing.

Okay, she had the overwhelming presence of Hitsugaya again, but that wasn't something she wanted to deal with. She had to admit - it was a comfort to feel again, even if he wasn't her Hitsugaya. She really shouldn't think of him as a different Hitsugaya, Hitsugaya would always be Hitsugaya, but she couldn't help it. So much had happened between her and the man that had died. She couldn't fathom having to cover that ground all over again.

Did she even want to?

Shaking her head, Momo headed down the hall to the rec field. Perhaps alone, she'd find something more at the ruins when she had no one to worry about but herself.
