Night 41: M-A Block Hallway

[from here]

Recluse surveyed the hallway as he stepped out into it, looking for Marcus. Nothing. He'd just have to wait and see if he'd turn up, then. He headed for the door to the cell block exit, keeping alert for any monsters that might be lying in wait. They usually seemed to take a few minutes at least to start attacking attacking, but that was no reason to act like a fool.

While Guy was also worried, he had already accepted that there wasn't much that they could do. Celes had pushed herself as far as she'd felt she should, and while it wasn't wise, she had been prepared to deal with the consequences. She was likely to recover by tomorrow without too much problem, so now they just needed to make sure that her generosity didn't go to waste by hauling tail to the basement.

At Claude's comment, Guy turned toward his friend and gave a small nod. "It sounded like she was doing it in exchange for the information that Dias has been giving her, but yeah, I'm not so sure that's a fair trade." He supposed it was a matter of opinion, seeing how information was pretty important here, but they would have to discuss it with Dias once the man returned.

For now, all they could do was wait, but Guy would be lying to himself if he said that he wasn't getting impatient.

He didn't think it was a fair trade, either, considering anyone could get that information if they just posted about it on the bulletin board. Dias had implied he wanted to ask Leon to make her a weapon as payment, but that didn't exactly sit well with Claude since Leon would be the one doing all the work. It couldn't hurt to ask him, of course, but Claude felt like they ought to personally do something themselves.

"I guess we'll have to figure all that out later," he said. Right now they needed to focus on getting to the basement. Claude didn't want the night to end before they had a chance at whatever challenges were down there.

The blond paused, looking thoughtful for a moment. "You know, I wonder if it might be better for us to try cutting through the courtyard this time." He frowned. "It'd probably be a little more ground for us to cover, though, and I don't know if we'd have time for that..."

Guy thought it was strange that Claude brought up the courtyard route all of a sudden. They had always gone straight through the Sun Room, so why change things around now? Granted, the Sun Room way had only actually gotten them there once, and that had been largely due to luck. Still, that didn't meant that going by the courtyard would work any better. Wouldn't they statistically have a better chance of succeeding if they stuck to the same plan?

He couldn't be sure either way, but that was his feeling on it. "Yeah, I'm not really sure. What made you think of it, though? I mean, why do you think it would be better?"

It seemed like things could jump out at them from a lot more places if they went outside, including those virgin-eating birds. Guy tried not to blush as he remembered that. It was something he'd never actually mentioned to Claude, but now he found himself wondering if he friend would be victim to them or not. Claude was younger than him, but he also didn't have a phobia that made physical contact with females an impossibility.

Claude gave a small shrug. "Well, we didn't make it the past two times we've gone that way," he explained. "Seems like you can only go the same route so many times without at least thinking about a change, you know? Not to mention the cafeteria entrance from the courtyard would put us closer to the kitchen door, so if there's something in there, we'd have less ground to cover to get there."

There were drawbacks, too, though. Like he'd mentioned earlier, it'd probably wind up taking a little more time to go that way. When it came down to it, the sun room route was the most direct way, which, unfortunately also had the most traffic running through it. Then again, it was possible they could get attacked in the courtyard as well, which would be worse since there weren't any doors to duck into, unlike the sun room.

"I'm not saying we ought to go that way tonight or anything," he added. "I was just thinking out loud."

Claude had a good point about it maybe being easier to get through the cafeteria if they came in by courtyard, but that wasn't taking into account all the dangers they might come across on the way there. If they wanted to think about it logically, then going through the Sun Room and the cafeteria versus going through the recreational field, courtyard, and cafeteria made it seem like the first option was the better choice. The only problem was that the Sun Room was almost certainly guarded.

Now he was just thinking for the sake of thinking. He sighed and glanced back down the hallway that Dias had disappeared to, wondering how much longer it would be. He didn't think the man would take his time, so it probably shouldn't be too much longer.

"Yeah, I guess we'll see," Guy eventually said with a shrug. "I mean, both ways are bound to be dangerous, so there's no real way of knowing which option would be better on any given night. I guess going the other way would at least give us a change of scenery."

"I'm back," Dias announced himself as he approached, not particularly wanting to take either of his companions off-guard. They did both have swords, after all, not to mention some skill with them. "Celes is with Hughes; she should be safe there."

There wasn't anything wrong with a change of scenery, as far as Claude was concerned. Still, he wasn't sure if experimenting with it tonight would be such a good idea. They were already pressed for time, and the other route could possibly cost them precious minutes, even if nothing attacked them on the way. And given their track record, he knew he couldn't count on having a smooth trip.

He turned once he saw Dias return, and he smiled. "Oh, good." The blond still hoped she'd be all right, but there was no point in fretting about that now. He'd just have to check up on her condition later.

"Well, if everybody's ready, let's move out," he said. With that, he began to lead the way out of the hallway.
