Day 41: Women's Showers

Utena was very, very glad that the patients were finally being allowed to go to the showers. Even for a girl more used to sweating than many in her gender, two days without a shower was definitely enough to make her feel stickier and stinkier than she preferred to be. Especially after all the running around and tearing apart of rooms she, Celes and Edward had done the night before.

I really hope those rooms magically turned clean this morning or something, like every other place in here seems to, Utena thought at that, hoping that no patients had awoken to the rather desperate-looking remains of a break-and-enter.

Taking a wash towel from one of the baskets, Utena headed for a free showerhead.

[Free. Limit: Any]

When someone moved in next to her, Juri didn't desist until her hair was rinsed squeaky clean. The rest could be done more leisurely. She turned slightly toward the younger-looking girl beside her. "This is this dumbest place to meet, but hi." She wasn't the least embarrassed. "I'm Juri." She reached for the soap and started scrubbing her feet, lifting one foot at a time.

There was a sentiment Evangeline could bring herself to agree with. If she'd been in a really argumentative mood she could have thought up a few dumber places, or pointed out that the value of the meeting entirely depended on the meeting itself and not the location, or just gone with the usual and implied that it was even dumber because it involved Juri, but right now saving her abuse for the washroom in particular and Landel's in general was priority one.

"You can say that again," she said, halfway between plain old grumbling and wry commentary. "Evangeline."

Wasn't she just sociable today? Time for washing.

As she moved onto soaping and rinsing other parts of her body. "Do you think these people would give me shower sandals?" she asked. "I know there's worse here, but the idea of getting a foot infection..." She wrinkled her nose. It was hard not to look at other people as possibly the sort of scum who'd never make it in Juri's rarefied world. Though this girl didn't look that way particularly.

"I know that must sound petty, but I value my health."

"Their heads are all empty, but they might care about that kind of mundane crap," Evangeline said. "Go ahead and ask."

She didn't know why the girl was asking her, except perhaps because she had come to the minority conclusion that idle conversation was less awkward than pretending the rest of the room didn't exist... which she was willing to tolerate as long as Juri actually did something with her opinion and went ahead and asked. Being made to talk to fill up someone else's time didn't suit her. At all.

Of course, she felt perfectly free to waste other people's time frivolously, and decided to pick at the harmless-seeming explanation Juri had attached to the end of her complaint. "Why's that?"

Not much left. It felt too good to be clean. "I'm a model and a championship fencer. I have to keep fit. Just in case I ever get out of here." She wasn't sure why she wanted to talk. It did put the rest of the shower room at a distance. That could easily be the only reason. Juri had a feeling this girl was mocking her, though she didn't know why and couldn't call her on it.

"It's better to be healthy anyway. Infections are gross."

Evangeline took a serious, measuring look at Juri for the first time. "Hn. Not bad. For a child of the modern era that makes you pretty accomplished..."

It was faint praise, though... the way she said it made it quite clear that she expected very little from a 'child of the modern era'. Still, it was enough for her to ask another question.

"Are you happy with that?"

"Which? Getting out or my old life? I miss my old life." Juri shrugged and turned off the water. She squeezed excess from her hair and looked for where the towels were kept. Her habitual frown was back, but she made an effort not to be churlish. "Who wouldn't miss that?" Then she thought of Anthy. No, she didn't like her, but she couldn't imagine wanting to go back to being the Rose Bride. "I take that back. There are worse things than being here, I guess."

"Lots of them," Evangeline agreed. "Some of us would find your life just as much a prison, though."

She waved the girl off dismissively as she finished washing. "Well, don't think about it too much. It was well said that ignorance is bliss, so try to be a bit dumb, even if you aren't."
