Nightshift 40: 2nd Floor East Wing Nurse Residential Hall

[From here]

The hallway was empty when Rangiku pushed the door open, the silence seeming particularly eerie. There was no information about this particular area, or at least, nothing that she'd ever seen, aside from the fact that it existed. She peered around in the gloom, picking out numerous doorways leading to unknown rooms. It looked as though they had their work cut out for them if they wanted to try all of the doors. She wished that they had more than one copy of the key for a start. It would be useful to be able to send one off with each group to try as they came across doors. It would take a lot less time than having just herself and Gin doing nothing but that.

She glanced back at Gin and then turned to the first door of the row, slipping the key into the keyhole and turning it sharply. It didn't even move. "I wonder what these rooms are for," she murmured quietly.

Gin took note of the names Rangiku mentioned, though his expression went unchanged. He followed her into the empty hallway, flashlight constantly moving, eyes watching for the smallest sign that the hall might contain some threat. He hadn't been down this way before and it was interesting to note that there were so many doors, so close together. There were a few places he recalled seeing something similar; their own dorm rooms and the rooms set aside for experimentation. While it was hard to be sure, there was a good chance the rooms here were for one or the other.

"Seems t'be a lot of rooms we ain't checked yet, in spite of all those maps floatin' around," he commented, trying the handle of another. "They seem kinda small though. Think they'd give if we jus' gave 'em a good hit?" The experimentation rooms didn't, but the dormitory rooms went unlocked. Chances were fairly difficult to guess.

It didn't seem likely that the rooms would be so simple as a bedroom, but then again, who could say? The night had been quiet thus far and while he knew very well how unlikely it was to stay that way, his curiosity had the better of him. While Rangiku was busy trying doors, he gave the one nearest him a sharp kick, the sound echoing in the empty hallway.

Nothing. He tried again. It wiggled, but barely. These weren't the same as the doors he'd broken into so easily before. Sturdier maybe? On one hand, it was a relief; whatever was behind them was likely of importance, but on the other, it meant that if the key didn't work, it was another waste of time.

"Either I'm gettin' soft or these ain't budgin'," Gin commented, glancing up to see Rangiku's progress.

A door opened down the hall, creaking back on rusty hinges. From the door came a rush of wind and with it the childish laughter of a slyph. The little creature kept invisible as she danced down the hall, circling once around Gin and Rangiku, giggling and whispering unintelligible phrases to them. But she didn't stay long, oh no, what came next was scary, even to her. Her laughter disappeared down the hall and died out near the entrance as she slipped under the cracks and through the keyhole into the main hall. She, too, wanted to escape what would come next.

For a few moments, silence descended, and then it stirred. A low groan, like that of a bear wearing from slumber grumbled and cracked, turning into something that sounded more like stones grating on one another. From the furthermost room, a dull glow came - one that didn't illuminate the world around it, but that gave just enough light to let the unfortunate know what they were facing.

Knived hands clacked against the door frame as the lucentien pulled itself into the hall - but where legs were supposed to be was a long reddish black tail of a kida, leaving a slimy trail behind it. In the midst of the smooth face was a wide mouth, dotted with sharp teeth, that cut the head nearly in half. The leftover opened its mouth, tilting the top of its head back as a single bloodshot eye rolled into view and focused on its prey.

Then, lightning fast, the creature pushed forward, aiming its deadly claws at both people.
