Nightshift 38: Recreational Field

[from here]

She almost wished that she hadn't went last night. Because standing in this field again, in the same place she had been when she felt Hitsugaya die, was surreal. There was no one out here this time--no people, no kids, no mourning Shinigami, no virgin-eating birds. Just the chilly wind. She wrapped her arms around herself, shifting her flashlight and spear.

Senna moved close next to the buliding, hiding in the shadows and peering upwards. No birds so far. Maybe they'd be lucky. That guy better not show her up. Though she had to admit, wearing her Shinigami uniform was a lot warmer than the stupid outfit they gave everybody. And at least there was no more damn smiley face staring at her.

[Waiting for Reid down here.]

A muffled "MERCURY...AQUA...RHAPSODY!" could be heard across the field a second before four jets of ice and water came blasing out of the mist towards the two ninjas.

[Strong enough to knock you over (so like a force blast) and with freezing effects. Down time for freezing: 30 mins. Also possiblity of being cut by shards of ice.

There were others close to them in the mist, two presences by what he could sense though one had fallen back suddenly. He considered that one may have been injured, but without visual confirmation Kurogane wasn't able to deduce just which had fallen back - patient or enemy. Hell, they could even both be enemies in this place since monsters didn't always keep alliances with their own kind.

He left the considering for later once his ears caught the shouted words of a woman. The sound of a battle call was easy to decipher, muffled or not, and Kurogane prepared for whatever attack he sensed coming his way. Reacting as best he could given the situation, he pulled his cloak up as a block with his left arm. At first he only felt the blast of chilled air slamming him, but the moment the force became strong enough to blow his cloak clear off him, the blast of icy water reached. It struck his arm first, shards of ice cutting where they would, and forced him back into the wall with one quick blow.

He heard the muffled battle cry - an announcement of an attack, surely - but hadn't expected how fast it ended up coming. He couldn't see whichever girl had done the attack through the fog, but a moment later some sort of icy water-based attack shot out of the mist, and he had enough time to think of how rare a bloodline ability that was before the brunt of the attack slammed into Kurogane, who was closer to the source.

The man stumbled back against the wall and, instinctively, Kankurou ducked to the side, seeing that four of the blasts were coming, and one had struck Kurogane, and there were three more to be dealt with. Kankurou wasn't the fastest mover, though he was slightly further away than the other man, had that extra moment of warning, choosing to evade rather than block. He caught the edge of a blast in the space between his shoulder and jaw, feeling the cold burn of it against his skin at his neck and along the top of his right shoulder, the concussion knocked him back, and his head bounced off the wall.

Hissing in pain, he dropped slightly, crouching, eyes scanning the mist for more attacks before he glanced over at Kurogane, "Okay?" he asked, voice low and growling slightly in his throat.

Scanning the pair, Mercury saw that her ice water blasts had made contact with both the patients, both now up against the wall.

She wasn't going to take any more chances, not with so many patients wandering around the field at this time of night. She had to deal with people quickly.

"Go back to your room!" she said, with a raised voice. "Or I will attack you again!"

[If you still want to get over the wall, Logan-mun said they will provide a distraction for you ^^]

"Yeah," Kurogane breathed in just as hushed a tone, but despite his words, his condition said differently. No real wounds had been taken save for a few cuts due to the ice, but as for his left arm it was cased in ice up to just shy of his shoulder. "Che..." he hissed, managing to lower the arm without any pain, but knowing that he'd lost use of it for as long as the ice remained.

Ignoring his arm's condition, Kurogane set his attention back into the mist. There were still other presences around aside from the one that had fallen back. They, however, were the furthest from the woman by Kurogane's estimate. "She can't do that for everyone," he thought, then turned a glance on the kid once more, "Go to the wall again. Just focus on getting over." Earlier Kankurou had proven to follow orders well and without question, so Kurogane believed he'd do the same once again unless he was the vengeful type.

Kankurou's eyes flitted back and forth between the woman, who had said they should go back to their rooms, and Kurogane, who was obviously worse off than he was ready to admit. He shifted, the hairs on the back of his neck standing up, ignoring the freezing, stinging feeling at the side of his neck and along his jaw and shoulder.

Kurogane turned and told him to go to the wall and try to get over, and for a moment Kankurou bristled, angry already at being in an unfamiliar situation after what happened with Gaara, before he forced himself to think of it like being on a team. Kurogane was the man who knew what was going on, Kankurou didn't. He'd lead his own team once he got used to it, but for now...

Gritting his teeth, he nodded once, and shifted back toward the wall, looking for hand and footholds - normally, getting over a wall took little to no effort, but his chakra was fucked up and he didn't have time to rely on something that might let him down halfway up. So he shifted, eyes flicking over the wall and then back, starting to work his way up. Climbing wasn't his strongest area, not without chakra, but he could do it in a pinch and he was in good shape, at least.

While Kankurou did as told - as finally there was someone who would listen! - Kurogane took a moment again to sense what was happening. The attacker was becoming angrier as more and more people entered the field, and now there was the threat of a larger attack than before. He'd already lost the use of one arm for the night and he would not be staying to lose mobility in any other part of himself.

Without the use of one arm, the wall would be more difficult than it already was, but Kurogane wasn't one to let that stop him. He had height on his side at least, and after taking a moment to sense the other through the mist, he took a running leap to get his right to grasp the top of the wall. Once he had that grip he refused to let go and eventually hoisted himself up and over.
