Nightshift 40: Cafeteria
[from here]
There was no need to tarry long here, Endrance thought, as he quickly made his way over to the nearest door leading outside. He put his hand on the handle, pushed it...and it didn't move. "That's odd," he said, trying it a second time. When it didn't move, then, he sighed huffily. He couldn't pick the lock, so there was only one other option.
He moved back a few steps and charged at the lock in an all-too-familiar motion, one so reminiscent of doing battle that he almost felt the urge to shout an attack name as he did so. The pipe struck the lock, breaking it.
Endrance nodded once, then moved on.

Endrance stumbled into the room, leaning against one wall. Part of him wanted to sit down, but he realized that if he did, he wouldn't be getting up easily. "Macha...and that other...but..." The words came out in short bursts, between heavy breaths. "Why?"
He stared up at the black ceiling. "Why couldn't I...I was close, so close, but..." He sighed heavily. This, the false Mia...it was all just about too much. It was one thing after another, and Endrance was close to tears.
Crying about it wouldn't do him any good, though. The only thing to do now was go forward. As long as he was able to keep that in mind, and keep Haseo's words in his heart, he could still do that.

The cafeteria was much the same as well. Though it highly unlikely that monsters would hide under the tables and wait to strike at the ankles of whoever came too close. But again, one could never be too cautious.
Even if he did feel somewhat ridiculous for making sure to shine his light under each table as they passed by.

So far, so good; there wasn't anything to be had. They reached the door to the kitchen, and he tried the handle. It was locked.
"Damnit!" he said, frowning down at the doorknob. He rattled the door experimentally. It shook, which meant the lock might not be as heavy-duty as the ones they'd found upstairs. Of course, those hadn't had any knobs at all. But this wasn't as easy as he'd wanted.
He turned and looked up at Van. "We can try to break it," he suggested. He didn't know how to pick a lock, though he'd have tried if he had anything to try with. The heavy metal pipe might be able to get them into the kitchen, though. He wasn't sure.

Which effectively did nothing, aside from loudly declaring their location to any and all monsters that could be near.
Van frowned deeply, scanning his light across the cafeteria to make sure nothing suddenly appeared. "We, may need something a little more subtle."

"Maybe. I don't know how to pick the lock. Are you sure we can't break it?" He knew firsthand how strong Van was; it seemed absurd that he wouldn't be able to break the lock at all. He wished that he could use hyperresonance, but he hadn't been able to do anything with fonons since he'd arrived here. He wondered if the replica was the same, and decided immediately that he didn't care to find out.

Bringing the light back to the door, he looked over the knob. The pipe had seemed to have little effect on it at all. "We can try again, but it wouldn't be wise to announce our presence anymore than it has been." He frowned, lifting a hand to gently stroke his beard. "Perhaps, we can find something to pick the lock. It would be quieter at the least."

Yukari, just inches tall, came tumbling out of a hole in space that appeared just beyond the doors to the Sun Room, closing as it spat her out. Getting to her feet and brushing herself off, Yukari considered her situation. She was still tiny, and who knew how long this would last. And there was still that girl who might catch up...
The youkai went back to the door, peering back into the Sun Room cautiously.
[Possibly waiting for Mele, will re-size next turn]

It was about at this time that she suddenly began to lose sight of the floor as it moved away. Or rather, she was moving away from it. After a bit of disorientation, the youkai found herself once more her normal size. Opening her gap, she fumbled around inside it for a while as she looked for her parasol; there was enough moonlight outside that the flashlight wouldn't be necessary. A few minutes, one shirt and one instance of nearly getting her head stuck inside - looking around inside the gap had not particularly helped, by the way - Yukari finally came out with her accessory. And a splitting headache.
It was because of that Yukari decided against seeking revenge against the spirit of the Sun Room and to go out and get some air instead.

Instead, the guardian lunged forward toward the figure, intending to distract him from the other two long enough to allow them to either escape the way they'd come or move on; it hardly mattered, so long as they managed to get out of danger. It was too close for him to use his bow, so Yue settled for aiming to drive an elbow into the figure's throat.
