Nightshift 40: M11-M20 Hallway

There was this 'Avatar' again, the thing that supposedly linked one's consciousness within this video game. Klavier couldn't quite understand how such a thing could help anyone fight, but he was certain that this connection had something to do with how and why Endrance was taken. If this really wasn't something every player experienced, then there was little doubt others might find such a thing interesting, yes? He still wasn't sure how this all worked, but preserving this connection had to be the point of it all. At least in this particular case.

Any further discussion on this or the strange 'Kira' murders was cut short with the intercom announcement. If one could call it that. Herr Doktor's voice and demeanor changed come nightfall, true, but this was stranger than usual. In fact, he couldn't even be sure if it was the doctor. It was far too raspy to identify either way.

This was getting more bizarre with every evening. First taunting then what may or may not have been snoring... and now this strange dilapidated voice?

"Open the box?" he repeated. What could he possibly mean by that? ...Wait. Was this voice even addressing the patient population? It seemed too specific a thing to say to everyone. Could this be a message for Herr Doktor? Or was this a message for a specific party? Maybe someone had managed to do something recently...

Naruto kept glancing at Jiraiya, making sure he was still there and making sure he was seeing that he could get them to M18 without losing them. That wasn't very hard, since it wasn't even a hallway away, but still.

When he got near the right room, Naruto spotted Sakura and gave her a little wave, calling her name. He hadn't realised she was upset, yet, wondering why she was outside and not inside the room. Whoever's room it was.

Sakura startled when her name was called, rubbing at her eyes suddenly before forcing a smile. It was an assignment; be strong for Naruto, support Naruto. And Sakura took all her assignments very seriously.

"Oh-! Naruto, hey, I didn't see you coming." It was a second or two later that she saw Jiraiya and realized he must have come with her. She was really off her game tonight.

"I... they're all here already. I just needed some air. You know, so many smelly guys in one room," she waved a hand in front of her face, hoping her eyes weren't too red or puffy. "It's enough to make your eyes water."

"A-anyway, we should probably get inside before they start worrying."

Jiraiya was surprised, at first, when he saw Sakura standing outside the room. Then, he saw the look on her face. That reaction was only compounded by the way she was trying to brush off her reaction completely.

Kakashi must have told the rest of them, too. Damnit. Not that Jiraiya could blame him one bit, but Kakashi at least could have waited a night! If Naruto was reminded too much now of Kakashi's impending death, he'd be a wreck all over again. Jiraiya was just lucky that Naruto obviously didn't know whose room they were going to.

"Bathing is a lost art with the younger generations of men," Jiraiya finally joked, helping Sakura cover a bit for herself, before glancing at Naruto with a smirk. "So you managed to not get lost after all.

Naruto had never been good in understanding or detecting how a girl was feeling, and this was one of those cases. He could tell something was off, but not what. He looked at her curiously, unsure if he should ask if she was okay or not.

Except then Jiraiya said something gross that implied he was gross which wasn't true at all! He showered everyday, thank you very much.

"Oi, that's not true! You're worse than us, ero-sennin!" He said, loudly, giving him a light shove.

Had Jiraiya been given the same instructions? She wouldn't doubt it. Could be why he was escorting Naruto to the room now. Whatever the reason, she was actually grateful for the comments, which allowed Naruto to focus on something aside from her for a few moments.

She went on ahead, mostly to hide her face, giving a quiet knock before she pushed the door open again.
