Day 40: Recreational Field

Kio's breakfast ended on a much happier note than it had started. However, for once the announcement truly surprised him. He blinked as his nurse came to pick him up. Recreational Field? But.. but if they had a greenhouse, he wanted to go there. The prospect of gardening was a truly liberating one, an island of joy in this hellhole. He thought about going to the Sun Room and lying down, but it occurred to him that he hadn't had proper fresh air since being here. With a cheery goodbye wave to Honey, he followed his torturer outside.

It was much better than he had expected. The sun wasn't too hot (what time of the year were they in, anyway?), so he walked slowly along the walls, fascinated by the size of the field. He wondered if Sou-chan was alright. He hadn't even checked the board. Well, if Soubi wanted to apologize, Kio would be willing to listen. The place was so crisp and clean. He had to think if anyone had ever gone over the walls. What was out there? Freedom? Or a different sort of monster?

Leaning against one of the walls, Kio took as much advantage of the sun as he could. He desperately wanted a lollipop. One was quietly nestled in his pocket, but he would need to wait until the nurses were busy with other patients before he tried anything. Soubi had gone to some trouble to get them, the least he could do was make sure they didn't get confiscated. So with bated breath, Kio waited for a shift in the mood. He was, for once, content. Not happy, but not going crazy either.

Indeed, much of what the youth was saying went over Kunzite's head; though he grasped the basics of Naruto's situation, this 'Ero-sennin' and the details of the duties of the 'Hokage' were clearly foreign concepts. Nevertheless, the young man continued to bear more similarities to Kunzite's own 'protégé', as it were, and despite his hatred toward the Master, he could not help but smile at Naruto's predicament.

"It's good that you respect your teacher so," he finally responded, standing up and stretching his legs subtly. "I, too, have had the occasion to instruct someone, but my forte was in combat strategies, not calligraphy. He was a prince, in fact, and a bit hot-headed, many times insisting that an all-out attack was preferable to strategic patience and analyzing one's enemy. Still, he soon learned how to temper his fighting skills, and eventually..." But Kunzite stopped short of the praise that was about to escape his lips, and paused noticeably, lost in painful memories.

Naruto had to admit the prince Kunzite had taught reminded him of someone...Kunzite looked lost in thought, pausing as he spoke.

"Eventually he learnt better and kicked ass?" Naruto supplied with a grin. "I actually do combat more usually but I can't use any of my chakra here...so I can't practice my ninjutsu," he said, his pout almost audible.

"Heh...something like that," Kunzite laughed. Best not spoil the youth's optimism with tales of Master's sins, he thought to himself.

"Chakra...that means energy, correct?" he asked, almost certain his recollection was correct. "I, too, have been quite frustrated by the inability to use my powers to their fullest extents here. Even at night, when whatever shackles they've placed on us seem relieved, I become exhausted far too quickly with repeated use of my abilities."

"I am curious about your ninjutsu, however, as your mention of 'chakra' implies that it's likely not what I have in mind. What kind of techniques can you usually perform?"

"Yep, it's energy! And it's everywhere in our bodies and we have pathways for it and stuff," Naruto said with a nod and a grin. He actually still didn't quite know the details of it, just what Sakura and screamed at him for not knowing them a long, long time ago. It just seemed unimportant to him to know how it worked as long as it did work.

"And ninjutsu is what we can do with the chakra, like I can summon up clones of myself or replace myself with a log if I'm being attacked," he continued to explain.

As I thought, Kunzite mused wordlessly, his definition of ninjutsu is far different than what I know. Nevertheless, the techniques he describes...all energy manipulation used to manifest physical forms. Interesting indeed.

"Does everyone in your world possess such abilities?" he asked; clearly the youth was unable to accurately describe the particulars of this 'chakra'. "Only a handful of people in my world were so gifted, and even then it wasn't always something provided naturally."

[identity profile] whirlingwinds.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, pretty much! Well, we can't all do the same techniques, 'cause some people have less chakra or don't know how to control it as well, and there are different elements. But basic stuff like walking on water or walls or trees everyone can do," he explained. It was actually fun, trying to tell someone who knew nothing of their world how it worked. It kept him distracted, either way.

Basic stuff? Kunzite couldn't help but laugh.

"How useful walking up trees or water would be for the common person in my world," he mused out loud. "Even me, during the wars in which I've participated, such techniques would have been quite useful."

As much as he wanted to continue talking, however, he noticed the nurses calling in the patients for lunch, and Kunzite swore silently, still irritated at their constant hovering over them and the regimented life he now had to lead. "It seems we would have to continue this another time," he said softly, bowing once more to Naruto. "Take care, Uzumaki Naruto, and good luck with your studies."
