Nightshift 39: East Wing Hall A

[From here]

This was it, he remembered it. There were doors on each side and it took a few moments of thought before his drugged mind remembered which room had been the office of his doctor. Right hand side of the hallway, third door. He moved over to that side of the corridor, broken pipette clutched tightly in his hand as he walked, ready for any attack which might occur as he counted down the doors.

He tried the handle when he reached Wilson's door only to find it locked. He scowled at the handle as though it were the source of all his problems. He was going to have to make some noise then. He sighed softly and slipped the glassware into the makeshift sash around his waist before pulling back a couple of feet. Bracing himself, he slammed his shoulder into the door, feeling it shake beneath his weight. It didn't open but one more should do it he hoped. He pulled away and slammed his weight into it again and felt the lock break, sending the door flying open. He panted softly for a moment from the exertion, rubbing his arm which would undoubtedly be bruised by the effort. One door down at least. He'd have to decide if the others were worth it.

"He was my doctor today as well." Introducing common ground might make Peter more willing to talk, so Near offered that as they turned the corner into the appropriate hall. "I found it interesting that he isn't a psychologist, but a geneticist. It is possible that the other doctors also have different specialties, but even if they don't, the 'hiring' of one who isn't a psychologist is a questionable choice for the Institute's daytime image."

There weren't so many signs of life about, though Near could see a door open in the distance. Therapy likely would inspire curiosity among the patients, or so Near would have thought. It was possible that there were more patients who had previously explored this area and then been taken to a session, he supposed. Regardless, Dr. Suresh's door appeared untouched, and that was to their benefit.

"It calls into question the true purpose of the doctors." Near continued speaking in his even tone. "It might be wiser not to think of them as the staff that we typically encounter, but as a second set of visitors. Though them not recognizing people they knew from their own world is somewhat inefficient, both groups ultimately seem to be attempting to serve the same purpose."

Relieved that they had made it to the doctor hallway without any trouble, Peter soon set to trying to remember which exact office had been Mohinder's. He hadn't been paying as much attention as he should have at the time, but he hadn't realized it was something he would need to recall later.

Hearing that Mohinder had also been Nate's doctor was a shock, and while Peter knew it just had to be a coincidence, it was still pretty weird. At least this way they were more likely to pick out the right office.

It was true that it made little sense for Mohinder to be in a place like this, but Peter saw the connection where Nate didn't. He wasn't sure if he should publicize that sort of information, though. Tiptoeing around the idea of powers was always hard for him, since he wasn't big on keeping secrets.

Relating the doctors to the visitors was also something Peter had thought about, though his interaction with Mohinder had been way different from his interaction with Nathan. "I guess you're right, but it's not like all of Mohinder's patients knew him, right?" he pointed out. "I mean, maybe there are others besides me, but..."

That made him wonder if Sylar would be scheduled to see the man as well. That would be interesting, but Peter didn't have any good way of finding out.

Near's eyes narrowed as Peter offered what amounted to a weak contradiction to his theory. "They can accomplish their purpose without having a doctor brought in from each patient's world. Besides, it adds to their credibility to have the same staff members here on a long-term basis. A visit from a family member or friend, on the other hand, might only need to happen once or twice to achieve a desirable result."

It was obvious that Peter didn't remember which door was Mohinder's, and so Near took it upon himself to indicate the way with his flashlight. "That door. And besides what I've already said, consider that only a selected number of patients are taken to therapy, and receive visitors. I doubt this is random."

"Tell me. Are you particularly close to Dr. Suresh?" If Peter was, then it created the possibility that he was currently being targeted by someone for this psychological torture. What would be the motive behind selecting Peter in particular? And were there other patients in the same scenario? Near hadn't been closely connected with any doctors in his world, but Brooklyn and Peter had seemed familiar on the bulletin, and Near and Brooklyn had worked together before. Could these connections have been used by the Institute on purpose? It did seem rather odd that both he and Peter would have had the same doctor, and then by coincidence, both decide to investigate that person.

Used to working with Near for a couple nights, Brooklyn didn't even ask Peter for help in breaking the door down. Heading to the one Near had pointed out, the gargoyle sized it up before ramming his shoulder into it a couple times until it was knocked open.

"Everybody in!" he motioned at the other two with some small bit of cheer.
