Day 39: Intercom, Evening

The Head Doctor seemed a little rushed as he spoke on the intercom, not taking as much pleasure as he usually did in describing the delicious food that would soon be served.

"Hello, everyone! Tonight is turkey night, which means turkey breast in a great turkey gravy with some nice turkey sides: peas, herb potatoes, a small garden salad, and for dessert, a slice of pumpkin pie. We of course have vegetarian substitutes available, as well as our usual assortment of drinks.

"...I believe that's it! I'll talk to you soon!"

The intercom clicked off abruptly.

"I guess so," Emmett replied, this time with a slight grin. It could be worse. The boy could have been a singer, wouldn't that be his luck. And at least the kid was cheerful. He was Claude C. Kenni, the cheerful blond kid that he really didn't feel like killing tonight.

"I'm Emmett," he caught Claude's extended hand in a firm grasp and shook it. Emmett's skin was a degree or two colder than the boy's, and he released his grip quickly. "I just got here today."

Claude hadn't really expected the man's hand to feel so cool to the touch, but maybe it was a circulation problem or nerves or something. After all, waking up in a place like this was bound to be stressful, no matter how composed some people appeared. But his handshake was firm and strong, and Claude couldn't help but return the grin.

"Nice to meet you, Emmett," he said before returning to his seat. He'd only eaten a few bites of his turkey, so he picked up his fork again, even if he didn't exactly tear into the food. "Well, not that waking up here is exactly nice, but you know what I mean." No reason they couldn't be polite to each other even though it sucked to be here, right?

"I've been here a couple weeks," Claude added after a moment. "So if you have any questions you wanna ask, feel free. I noticed a lot of people do a pretty good idea of putting stuff up on the bulletin, though, so you probably have an idea of the kind of things that go on here." Even if saying all that was sort of depressing in of itself, Claude wanted to do his best in being helpful to his new roommate.

Especially if it kept Emmett from winding up like all his other roommates from before.
