Nightshift 38: West Wing, North Hall 2-B

[from here]

As before, Endrance held the door open to the new area. The pit of his stomach dropped as he walked through the doors himself - the area smelled antiseptic and cold, as if there was no question that unspeakable things could happen here. He hugged his arms to himself, as if trying to warm himself before going further.

"Do either of you have a map from here?"

Oh, if only this was The World, where accessing a map was as easy as pressing a button!

"No one I know," Methos replied. "Maybe no one at all. But there have been reports of deaths, just in the two days we've been here. Even if they've already disposed of any bodies, there may be autopsy reports. And if they haven't..." He shrugged as he trailed off. It didn't seem likely that he'd have a chance to examine any bodies, be they human or otherwise, very thoroughly. But on the off chance there was still some time left, it was worth a shot.

"Besides," he added, "we might find a use for the sort of equipment they'd likely be storing. Even if there's nothing educational, the trip won't be a complete loss."

"If they haven't?" Indy prompted. Whatever Pierson was getting at, Indy wished he'd just spell it out. Grave-robbing would be preferable to the alternatives all this ambiguity was leading him to speculate about.

Feeling suddenly apprehensive, he went through the door into the next room.

"At least we know we're not the only ones still left out," Methos stated, glancing back with a grimace at the door behind them. "We must have a little time yet before the guards make their rounds." Or tossed the gas canisters into the air vents, or however it was they knocked the patients out for transport back to their rooms.

"Probably not much," Indy replied. He was already jogging down the hallway. When he reached the far end, he found that the door was both cool to the touch (not surprising, given the room's function) and still locked. That probably meant no patients, but what it meant in terms of other assailants was anyone's guess. He shot a quick look back at Pierson. "I know you're a fan of the subtle approach, but I'm gonna do this the fast way, if you don't mind. We're just gonna have to hope anything in there is too busy hibernating to be bothered by a little noise."

He delivered the usual sequence of kicks and blows with unusual rapidity until the door broke down before them.
