Nightshift 38: M31-M40 Hallway

(From here.)

Holding a gun, ammo, a katana, and a kunai wasn't very easy. Especially when walking around a dark area at night. He'd waited for Akihiko to leave because Homura probably would have skinned him alive if his roommate had found out the club was in possession of a gun. And a key.

But he made it safely to M39 without falling on anything, which was a bonus considering he couldn't see a bloody thing without his flashlight on. He set his katana aside for a moment and knocked on the door.

"Uh... Kenren-han?" he called softly. "It's Hattori Heiji, the young guy from last night? I have that thing you need."

Kenren turned to grab his coat, pulling it on with practiced ease and bucling the belt tight around his waist. Much better. Then the gloves were pulled on. "Yeah," Kenren agreed. "It's not bad enough to bother a healer with it, I'd just prefer to not get any more injured," he said with a grin. Cracked ribs which made it painful to move. No wonder he'd spent a lot of the day sleeping.

He picked up the gun, checking it over carefully. Very different design to what he was used to, but it fit his hand well enough. He raised it and sighted along the barrel. "Are you set for the night?" he asked Hattori as he reached for the ammo.

Kenren laughed softly and nodded. "I don't think a lot of people are ever going to be set for spending the night here," he agreed with some amusement. "Even for people used to monsters and the like, the imprisonment is pretty wearing." Hell, he was finding the whole place kind of entertaining usually, and even he wanted to destroy the place as soon as he could. It had screwed with too many people. "Good luck with the metal then," Kenren said, starting to load the gun with bullets.

Just as he turned down the next hall, Itachi caught sight of a half-open door and heard familiar voices. He knocked lightly on the door and pushed it further open.

"Hattori-san? You have something for me, correct?" he asked the boy from last night, nodding at Kenren.

Kenren nodded back at Itachi as he thumbed the bullets into the gun. A pocket was filled with a few more, although he was hoping that he didn't have to use them. He was a good marksman though. Anything he shot at would likely only take one bullet before dying. It wasn't overconfidence, he just knew that he was a damn good shot. "Take care yourself," Kenren said, giving Heiji a smile. "Good luck tonight."

Itachi shrugged a little at Hattori, taking the proffered kunai. He was under the impression that it was better to address people in a formal manner, but he supposed that if the person requested otherwise, that would be the correct option. "Thank you, Hattori." He tucked the kunai in his pocket, confident that he would be able to draw it quickly enough in any given situation.

"Good luck to both of you on your missions as well," Itachi said politely before returning to the hallway. It was the kind of thing he thought one was supposed to say; normally he would not bother, but he should try to maintain good relations with the people in History Club. If he wanted to get anywhere with this method, that is.

"Yo, sorry I'm late," the redhead said as he came in, rubbing the butt of the flashlight against his temple.

"You think we could make a quick detour before we get started? I know what Homura said, but looks like there is a stray that needs picking up. My brother." Junior could tell that something was wrong on Nigredo's end. It was faint, but it was there. He didn't want to take the time to ask exactly what it was, but it did give him more reason to try and hurry.

Kenren shook his head when Junior apologised, smiling at the younger man. "Not a problem. It's not like it's that late or anything."

He frowned slightly though when Junior mentioned a stray, his brother. That sounded pretty bad for the kid. Waking up here was never a pleasant experience, no matter what. "Sure, we can do that," Kenren agreed. "I wouldn't ask you to ignore family like that, no matter what orders we have or who's giving them." Some things were just more important.

He picked up the katana and offered it to Junior, hilt first. "I think I was supposed to be handing this to you now, yeah?"

When Kenren frowned, Junior wondered if it was over his bringing up the "stray," but his words were more than enough to put him at ease. They'd get there, and he'd be able to make sure his younger brother was alright, and explain things. It was the least he could do, for being unable to do anything when their father had interfered last time, when he'd forced their hands. The least he could do for sitting there and letting Gaignun die.

"Thanks," he said, in response to the sword just as much as the agreement. Junior wrapped his free hand around the hilt and lifted it from Kenren's grip, testing its weight. Still felt kind of weird to be using one without any formal training, at least not like Jin had received, but he could make do. At least it looked like the other man had something far better to handle trouble with, which caused Junior to grin slightly. It looked like all those special missions that Homura hadn't really detailed on the board had kept the club productive. Much as he wanted to hold it himself, it was just damn good to see a gun somewhere around here.

"He's in M96," he said after a moment, back to being serious. "Should still be there when we swing by. He looks a lot like me, with black hair and green eyes." Or Junior assumed that he would; at least it looked like he wouldn't be the family midget again for a while.

"I hope that it'll work okay as a weapon," Kenren said seriously. It had been made for his hand after all, and sometimes that made it difficult for anyone else to use a sword. The balance could be totally off for one thing. But Junior seemed to be able to use it just fine. That was reassuring. He'd rather have him armed with a proper weapon.

"Brand new, huh?" he murmured at the mention of the room. With that, he grabbed the gun, holding it loosely in his hand, ready to shoot if he needed to. "Let's go."

[identity profile] udo-retrovirus.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
"It should be good," he replied, nodding. He'd get a better idea of just how well it might work next time he got to use it, but it seemed okay for now. Even if it was off, it was better to be using something stronger and with a better reach than the scalpels he'd been using.

When Kenren gave him the go ahead, Junior headed back out into the hall. He didn't know exactly where the room was, but he had a general idea, and he could ask the other man for clarification once they got further along.
