damned_institute | Day 38: Game Room

She’d never been in the Game Room before.

It didn’t look spectacularly interesting, she had to admit… but it’d be more fun than just hanging out in the Sun Room, right? Yuffie idly thumbed through a deck of cards, walking around the room to examine various bits and pieces. Board games, video games, chess… No really awesome prank material that she could see, but maybe she could rope somebody into a game of poker? That could be fun, but… ah, then again, most of the patients were just like her -- they didn’t have anything really cool that she could swindle out of them. Not until Nightshift, anyway.

Still! She’d keep it in mind. It wasn’t like there was anybody else in the room yet anyway, so any potential swindling would have to wait a little while. What could she do in the meantime, huh? Pick- pocketing a nurse could be fun..! Wait -- no, not when it was quiet like this. She’d have to wait until there was more cover, unless she got distracted. Yuffie hadn’t stolen anything in days, not since that time in Doyleton, with the Kaito kid…

Yuffie smirked. That had been fun.

Toboe took the card and looked at it (then sniffed it) before giving it back. "I'm Toboe!" He smiled brightly and then blinked as a card came flying from the direction of the other patients.

Sheena throwing it back at the woman caused Toboe to laugh, covering his mouth with his hands so he wouldn't be so loud, nodding gleefully. Sheena's secret was safe with him.

Okay, the sniffing was a little odd, but Sheena wasn't going to say anything about it. She grinned, happy Toboe was going to play along with her ruse.

"Nice to met you!" She tilted her head a little. "Hey, someone was asking about you on the board. You might want to respond so they don't get worried and stuff."

Toboe perked. "Do you know who it was? I...kinda can't respond. I can't read, or write."

Who had left that message?

"Uh... it wasn't signed. Whoever it was also asked about someone named Toph and someone named Dairine," Sheena replied, looking a little sheepish. "Those names mean anything to you?"

The whole time, a single card was quickly twirled between her fingers.

"No...I guess it was probably Renamon or Orihime though. But Orihime drew a picture last time so I could kinda see for myself...I left her a pawprint back!" Toboe grinned, remembering how he'd thought to let her know he was okay.

"My nurse just looked at me funny when I asked if she'd teach me, so..."

"..."

Another pause, the card stilling in Sheena's hand as she cocked her head a little.

"Paw print?"

"Well, I can't write back...I had to think a while of some way I could let her know it was me and that was the best I could come up with." Toboe shrugged. He wasn't as uncomfortable with the thought of people knowing what he was here--no one had reacted badly so far. But out of habit, his voice stayed low when he spoke again, like he was telling Sheena a secret.

"It's because I'm a wolf."

Sheena simply stared at Toboe for a moment before a single thought cut through her mind.

If Colette was here, I'd have to pin her to keep from squishing him in glee.

That thought broke her of her silence and she grinned. "That's pretty neat!" Aw, now she had an urge to scratch him behind the ears, but he probably wouldn't appreciate it in a human form. "I didn't know wolves could look like humans. Did this place do it to you? What color's your fur?"

Toboe was unnerved for a moment when Sheena just stared, but then she smiled. That was definitely good, Toboe didn't want to freak anyone out.

"Well, I could look like a person back home, too, when I wanted. But I was actually a wolf. Here...they made me really human."

He smiled brightly. "I'm kinda brown-red. Like my hair, only lighter!"

"Oh, you had illusion magic?" That was kinda cool. She looked at Toboe's hair and grinned. She started to reach out to pet him, but stopped herself. Quickly putting her hand in her lap, the ninja's cheeks turned pink in embarrassment.

"Uh... I've got a friend back home that would be, like, dancing on the ceiling if she knew you were a wolf." Colette literally could dance on the ceiling with her angel wings and all, but Sheena hoped she never would. That was bound to lead to disaster and an angry professor to boot.

Toboe didn't really understand why it would be embarrassing to pet him. He would actually really like it, it felt good. "You can pet me if you want, you know," he said, tilting his head slightly. "I don't mind."

"That's...I'd like to meet your friend someday, too! Not...many people back home like us." He smiled brightly, seemingly undisturbed by that, at least for now. It was just the way things were.

Hesitantly, the tinge still upon her cheeks, Sheena reached a hand out to softly pet Toboe on the head. Now that she was doing it, she felt silly, but... she liked it too. Dogs were mostly Colette's things, but the ninja liked them as well.

"I'd love for you to meet her, but..." Sheena sighed. "I hope she's never here. Things will become so much more dangerous for a lot of people then."

Toboe grinned happily. He didn't have a tail to wag anymore, but if he did, it would be going.

"Yeah. Somewhere else." The concept of 'different worlds' really didn't come into thought much...

With the happiness that was practically coming off of Toboe in waves, Sheena let some of her self-consciousness go and put a little more into the petting.

"Her name is Colette. She's very special in my worlds," Sheena explained. "I don't think she's ever talked to a wolf that could talk back before, but she talks to every dog she comes across, gives them names and..."

The ninja chuckled. "She really is a ray of sunshine. I miss her."
