Day 38: Patients' Library

The intercom rang out, disrupting what had turned out to be a rather pointless breakfast conversation, at least in Brainiac 5's eyes. He couldn't wait to put more distance between himself and Scar's blather of how logic, of all things, might not work the same way in this dimension. It was almost enough to make him believe that the man may very well have been a lion originally after all, as he'd never heard anything so very... ignorant and uneducated.

He quickly finished up the fruit he'd been nibbling on - he was no longer as hungry as he had been - and looked around automatically to see where Clark was. Unfortunately with the press of people around, some being led off to the library and others to the mentioned 'therapy sessions' - if that was what they really were - he had lost sight of the Kryptonian. Still there wasn't many places he could go, so Brainiac 5 would be able to catch up with him eventually to check on his condition and try and learn more about what had happened last night. That the Chapel had healed him - admittedly by passing his injuries to another - was interesting, but far more important in his eyes was what had happened to Clark and his powers. They hadn't been working correctly and that worried the Coluan boy more than he would normally have admitted. Without Clark's abilities... he wasn't sure what they would have to rely on in order to escape.

Another problem he would have to deal with was Grell... or, if he was to believe the notes on the bulletin board, the person pretending to be Grell. But that was going to require more careful planning before he made a move. Come to think of it, he had agreed to meet another in the library today on that same post that had sparked this whole mess. At least then he would have something of interest to look forward to, as he doubted any of the 21st century books were likely to be worthwhile to someone of his advanced intellect.

Following the nurses led him to what must have been the library; a reasonably large room filled with a range of archaic books on tall shelves, a few tables and chairs interspersed around the room. The Coluan boy couldn't refrain from wrinkling his nose in distaste as he entered the room, not liking the cumbersome books and the dust that he knew would have gathered on them; he much preferred the clean arrangement of his C.O.M.P.U.T.O. systems back in the Legion headquarters. It was much more practical then shelves and shelves of books on fictional worlds and dated information.

Trying to avoid as much of the room as possible, Brainiac 5 settled himself down on a chair to wait, keeping an eye out for a tall, dark-haired man with a red... something on his forehead.

It was pretty difficult not to notice Brook, so the boy must have been distracted if it took him that long to realize that a afro'd beanpole of a man had approached him. Brook didn't mind it though, and glanced up at the books. Reading wasn't exactly his thing as music was much more pleasurable, but he supposed he hadn't much choice here.

"Thank you very much. I'm not very used to places like this, with so many books around! Ah, but I forgot to introduce myself didn't I? My name is Brook! Yohohoho! What might your name be?" he laughed, taking his attention away from the books to look at the boy.

"You've never been to a library?" Danny wasn't exactly the most well-read person on the planet, but even he'd been in the library. Heck, even Tucker had been in the library, and he lived off PDA payments and wires.

"I mean. I'm Danny." Yohohoho? What was next, and a bottle of rum?

Now that Brook was looking at him, though, his hand instinctively covered the title of the book in front of him. Danny was used to the fact that this place was full of people with powers, but he'd also heard of people here who were just regular civilians, and if Danny had been some regular person who spotted a kid reading up about ghosts, he would've been curious as to why.

"Hm, I may've been a long time ago, but not recently! And I much prefer music to reading! Yohohoho!" A bottle of rum would have been nice, but no, it would not be following Brook's odd laughter. "It's nice to make your acquaintance, Danny. What might you be reading? Is it any good? Yohoho! I need to pick something out since it seems to be what they want us to do here!"

He wasn't prying to be nosy, he was just curious. If Danny knew more about books, then why wouldn't Brook want his advice on what was a good read?

Oh, well that explained things. And to be honest, Danny himself preferred music--it was just less boring. That wasn't to say Danny could play an instrument, but he would rather listen to Dumpty Humpty than read those stupid books they were assigned in English any day.

"T-this?" he stuttered, surprised by the question. "I-I don't really know, actually!" Cue nervous laugh--he didn't know what it was, even though he was reading it? Way to go. "I mean, I was reading it, but I wasn't all that interested. Kind of looking at it and not really paying attention to it, I guess." He shrugged. "You can have it if you want, I guess."

"Oh, is it a picture book?" Brook's head tilted, the man missing the meaning of Danny's words entirely. "Yohoho! That would be more entertaining though. A picture book shows you what you're reading and makes it more entertaining! Like if you're dancing about while singing or playing an instrument!" Again with the music, but it was in Brook's blood to make the relations. He knew more about music than he did anything else, after all!

Brook glanced down at the book, then held up a hand. "No no, I'll pick out one myself, thank you. Even if you weren't paying much attention, it is still the book you chose, so I wouldn't want to take it from you! Yohohoho! Now... what's to pick...?" He looked towards the bookshelves again, peering at the titles in turn.

"Er...no, it's not," he answered simply, unsure of how to react to the man's eccentricity. All he did was watch as Brook stood up and searched the shelves for a book of his own. Meanwhile, Danny snagged another look at the title of his book and memorized it. It was actually kinda funny, in a weird, "I think I know ghosts" sort of way. He doubted he'd be reading it much longer today with this guy around, but he could probably come back.

...wow. Did he actually just imply he wanted to go back to the library? This place was messing with him.

Brook chuckled. "Oh, my mistake then, but to each his own I suppose!"

There didn't seem to be any titles catching Brook's attention. He had passed over one that had "Comedy" in the title, but somehow the "Divine" part before the word had thrown him off. Thing relating to the otherworld, heavenly or hellish, were better left on their own. Brook had no desire to read about things he'd already experienced, after all!

"Yohohoho! I don't think there's anything I could get my nose into!" he laughed, nearly mentioning that he didn't have a nose, but he
did, so that wouldn't have been true! "I wonder if they would allow us to go the the music room instead?"
