Nightshift 37: Kitchen

[from here]

HK scanned the new area as soon as he entered, looking for any infrared signatures of living things in the vicinity. Nothing. Boring. He started heading for where the basement entrance was supposed to be hidden.

While SubZero wasn't the superstitious sort, he still knew better than to comment on how they had gotten this far just a little too easily. It actually made him feel somewhat uneasy that they hadn't been attacked yet, as though the institute, or the man in charge, were simply letting them progress only to throw something more horrible at them.

Of course, there probably was something worse than the creatures on the first floor waiting in the basement, SubZero would be even more surprised and suspicious if they ran into nothing tonight.

Beatrix paused, letting Ophelia move ahead of her, before turning back toward the door. Keeping an eye on that side of the room, in case something had been lurking in ambush over there, she covered the group, moving backwards with her sword ready if needed.

Nothing so far. She didn't like it when things were too quiet.

Ophelia wondered for a moment why Arlene had let her move ahead of her, but understood quickly enough when she saw the woman checking out the rear. She hadn't heard anything behind them, but it was better safe than sorry, she supposed. Ugh, 'better safe than sorry'? Why should I have to start thinking things like that? she thought with an unvoiced growl of frustration. Screw you, Martin Landel. There is no way you can imagine the suffering with which you will pay for this humiliation . . .

She glanced back over her shoulder as they crossed the kitchen making sure Arlene was still following at a good pace before moving up closer behind SubZero.
